The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise attributed to Sun Tzu, a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly known to be the definitive work on military strategy and tactics of its time. It has been the most famous and influential of China's Seven Military Classics, and "for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name." It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. The book was first translated into the French language in 1772 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. The first annotated English language translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, General Douglas MacArthur and leaders of Imperial Japan have drawn inspiration from the work.

Let's not pretend otherwise.Having said that, the ancient Chinese master strips away all the familiar trappings of war - the warriors, weapons, forts and tactics - to reveal the essence of conflict and how to win.His lessons are as valid here and now as they were in an empire a long time ago and far, far away. It simply does not matter how you are fighting, what you are fighting over nor even why you are fighting. If you are forced into conflict with another, the lessons in this book will guarantee victory.Brute strength, overwhelming force, super weapons, holding the high ground, none of these are required for victory. All that is needed is a leader who can understand and apply the principles of warfare.Essentially it boils down to three ideas.1. Know yourself.2. Know your enemy.3. Only fight when you can win.Do this, and you will win competitions, elections, games. Anything that involves conflict. Even wars.Sun Tzu's elegant language lays bare the principles of warfare, illustrating his lessons with examples from Ancient China. It is a thought-provoking, colourful and valuable book.

Dukart The Art of War seems to be a classic piece of Chinese philosophy that is easy to translate into a mediocre work. I've read a number of translations of Sun Tzu that are clunky and have none of the wit of the original text. Now, I don't read ancient Chinese, but when a Chinese philisophical text reads like a manual for a microwave, you know something is lost in translation. On the other hand, this translation, done by Thomas Cleary, showed me the subtlety in the Art of War. In addition to the work itself (which would make a very thin book) there is a long, interesting introduction written by the translator which I found very helpful in thinking about the Art of War, as well as helping to put the work in both a historical context, and the context amongst many of the other ancient Chinese philisophical works. How Sun Tzu's work relates to Taoism is very interesting. Also, there are selected commentation on each of the paragraphs of the Art of War. These commentaries were written over different periods of time by different Chinese philosophers. These help to show how many different points of view can exist over a single statement made by Sun Tzu.I find this translation very well done, and I can easily recommend it to anyone who wants to read The Art of War.

A timeless classic that has practical application By Joanna Daneman I got this particular edition of Sun Tzu's Art of War at a strategy course for sales. I already had a copy of it at home, but this edition is so nicely done that I gave my old copy away and kept this one. The introduction of James Clavell is a nice touch. It is amazing to me that this book is not read in high schools or colleges in favor of Machiavelli's work (The Prince or The Art of War.) Sun Tzu's writing is clear and to the point. Unlike the popular Book of Five Rings by Musashi, this book is not metaphorical and poetic; it's downright practical. And it's not hard to read, unlike many classics. If you are doing business in China, this is also a good book to know. I mentioned some of the classic strategies while giving a course in China, and every member of the class had read it, knew it well, and gave me many examples from recent Chinese history where Sun Tzu's strategies were employed. This book is close to their hearts, and will give you insight if you are doing business in the East.Of course, the most famous anecdote from this book is about gaining the obedience of troops; the emperor, wishing to interview Sun Tzu for the commission of general, asked if Sun Tzu's military principles could be applied to women. Sun Tzu replied yes, the principles worked for women as well as men. Accordingly, Sun Tzu was given the task of organizing the emperor's many concubines into an army. Sun Tzu lined up the concubines and set the two favorites as officers at the head of the columns. He gave them a simple set of orders to march and drill (eyes front, right face, about face. The drums sounded and instead of following the commands, the girls simply giggled and blushed. He repeated the orders again, saying that if the orders were not clear, it is first the fault of the general. He repeated the commands, and the girls simply stood and giggled again. "If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders ARE clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers." Upon saying this, he ordered the two concubines at the head of the troop, favorites of the emperor, to be beheaded. The emperor hurriedly sent down the command to stop, he had no desire to see his favorites executed. The emperor said "We are satisfied that the general knows how to command."But Sun Tzu said, "Once having received the commission, there are certain commands I am unable to accept." And he ordered the two favorites to be beheaded. Once again, he gave the commands. The concubines marched, whirled about and drilled in perfect order. The emperor appointed Sun Tzu general.

This text is quite different, and so I have to say I'm glad I came across it!This resource is very practical in that it rationally explains why Network Marketing is not only a great opportunity but how it can help deal with many of the economic ills faced by our society. In addition, it provides a lot of practical guidance and tips so you're not stuck annoying the heck out of those who you know. Keep in mind that the practical suggestions for optional recruiting options are not only usable alone, but creatively can be mixed and matched.I will note that I did find some of the material not immediately applicable to my particular situation but useful down the road.

By Amber & Dean De Grasse How to Become Filthy Stinking Rich through Network Marketing is an Entrepreneurs treasure map to achieving wealth and time freedom! Mark Yarnell is not only a mentor but has changed my life through his words for better and for always. You will not be able to put this book down from beginning to end. Mark Yarnell and Valerie Bates have taken the two greatest fears away in the Industry. Getting stuck, getting started and not going all the way. This is for those who had a destination but lost their way and dreams at the turn of the economy. Be prepared to realize it's never too late to be who you were meant to be!

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Ok But...Not For Introverts! By Roger A. Hackney I thought this book had lots of good advice about being successful in Network Marketing. That is until half way through the book when they laid out very emphatically what type of person could "Never" make a successful NW Marketer. It was me exactly. My suggestion to the writers is that maybe they should have put that in a "Who this book is for" section. Of course they wouldn't sell as many books that way. Nonetheless for those of you who are outgoing sales types there is a lot of good food for thought (at least in the 1st half of the book).

Nature chose the spring of the year for the time of John Burroughs's birth. A little before the day when the wake-robin shows itself, that the observer might be on hand for the sight, he was born in Roxbury, Delaware County, New York, on the western borders of the Catskill Mountains; the precise date was April 3, 1837. Until 1863 he remained in the country about his native place, working on his father's farm, getting his schooling in the district school and neighboring academies, and taking his turn also as teacher. As he himself has hinted, the originality, freshness, and wholesomeness of his writings are probably due in great measure to the unliterary surroundings of his early life, which allowed his mind to form itself on unconventional lines, and to the later companionships with unlettered men, which kept him in touch with the sturdy simplicities of life.

With pieces such as “No Scales in Heaven,” in which Brad points out the essential pointlessness of overthinking diet and exercise, and “Celebrating Your E.D. (erectile dysfunction) During Your Mid-Life Crisis,” the star comedian encourages you to forget the overwhelming concerns that accompany middle age and to welcome the laughs—even if you throw your back out doing it. Penned in the blunt, conversational, no-nonsense style that has cemented Brad’s status as an icon in the comedy industry, this autobiographical book will help you accept that, no matter what, we all get old. When the Balls Drop, by Brad Garrett

Review “Dear Brad, I just read the book. If you were this funny on the show we coulda done another year. What the fuck? Seriously though, everyone should buy Brad’s book. It’s a win-win. You’ll relate, you’ll laugh, and if he does well as a writer he’ll give up television." (Ray Romano)“Little does Brad Garrett know but his balls never dropped. He had none to begin with. This is not a ‘mid-life’ memoir, this is a ‘life-support’ memoir. Do us all a favor and pull the plug.” (Kevin Nealon)“Of all the balls in all the nut sacks in all the world, Brad Garrett’s are the last pair I’d want to think about. But not unlike most of his dates, Brad has forced them on us. So before this winds up in the Costco remainder bin, be the first and only on your block to buy a copy. He’s just a sex tape and an appearance on Dancing With The Stars away from reviving his career.” (Nathan Lane)"Garrett is a naturally funny writer...readers will laugh. A laugh a lot." (--Michael Ian Black in a New York Times Book Review)

I Was a Ten-Pound Preemie

As stated earlier, I am a pessimistic optimist, or what I like to call a “pissed-omist.” This is a person who has lived long enough to know not to expect much from most people or life in general, but still allows him- or herself the hope that somewhere under all the horseshit there may possibly be a pony. As you’ll see, there were many factors that influenced the theories, neuroses, and occasional lunacy that inspired this book, and I feel you deserve the inside track. Therefore, please bear with me as I give you a bit of insight into my life to improve your understanding of how I arrived at this particular mentality. I was born Brad H. Gerstenfeld on April 14, 1960, to Alvin from the Bronx, New York, and Barbara from Bellingham, Washington. I tipped the scales at nine pounds, eleven ounces. My dad never knew what the H in my name stood for, and my mother didn’t tell me until I was twenty that it stood for Harry, after her favorite uncle. The birth certificate just says “H.” If she was that embarrassed about the name, why the hell would she give it to me? Spell it out or pick another. “I was such a large sperm, my mother went into labor during conception.” I wrote that joke when I was fifteen, which made sense considering my mother used to tell total strangers, “He was so huge at birth that the doctors wanted to break my pelvis or Brad’s shoulders in order to get him out of me, but I insisted they just use the tongs.” (She had trouble remembering the word “forceps.”) To this day I don’t know if that tool was actually used or not, but there are two tiny indentations on my skull that fill up with water when I sweat. Every man’s life (and a portion of my stand-up) revolves around the mystery that is his penis. In reality, without one, none of us would exist, so it deserves exploring. Let me start by saying that mine has never been right. Unfortunately, I think it all began with the rabbi, who must have had some resentment toward my family that he indirectly took out on me. My paranoia knows no bounds . . . Maybe the mohel just stank at his job, like most people. Or maybe he had ADD and found himself distracted by the mound of chopped liver formed into the shape of the Wailing Wall or the hubcap-size cheese Danish sweating on the buffet table. I always found it so odd that people could eat immediately after seeing an infant’s penis being mangled by a stranger in a black robe and sketchy beard. How can an act so visceral and cringe-worthy lead directly to food? Perhaps it’s merely diversion, or nervous eating, or years of conditioning. It’s probably the same mental disconnect by which Italians can dismember a body, dump it in the river, and then go for ribs. I suppose this is where the term “comfort food” originated. The bottom line is my circumcision was fucked up. I have more of a two-skin. The Yid must have stopped the trimming somewhere in the middle. He bailed on my rehemming like a Vegas dealer suddenly asked to go on break. He clapped his hands, wished everybody luck, and left the cards where they were. It’s no secret that when a circumcised penis is at rest, it appears as if the little fella is wearing a cozy turtleneck sweater, right? Not mine. It’s as if my dick is wearing a hoodie. He looks like the smallest criminal on record. Like a little poker player with his head on his chips. Either way, I got ripped off. Literally. And it’s made me second-guess my manhood my entire life. My urologist, Dr. Spiegelman, who by the way is the only person not to pass out from laughter after I remove my pants, believes the size has nothing to do with the botched circumcision. He also tried to convince me that in my case, “the appearance of having a small penis is only an optical illusion because it is on a body of massive girth.” Optical illusion? He actually brought up magic in a medical context to make me feel better. In other words, like in real estate: location, location, location. I suppose if my penis were on a Chinese fellow, it would look enormous. I will have to test that theory the next time I’m dining at Twin Dragon. *   *   * In addition to bad taste in mohels, my mom had a flair for drama. It went along beautifully with her Kabuki makeup and sequined outfits. She was like a Liza Minnelli impersonator without the gay husbands. I’ll never forget when I was six years old and I saw two dogs getting it on for the very first time. Bewildered and concerned, I blurted out, “Mommy, what’s wrong with those two dogs?” “Well, darling,” she said after a considerable pause, “the dog in the front is very sick, and his friend is pushing him to the hospital.” This obviously messed me up for years to come, because every time I injured myself, I would seek out the neighborhood dog in hopes of being led to the ER. Regardless of what anyone believes, almost every guy marries someone either very close to his own mother or the complete opposite. This is why I’ve spent the majority of my adult life with women who are borderline comatose, for fear of being with someone who inadvertently breaks into “Don’t Rain on My Parade” during a canoe ride. When I was seven, my parents divorced. It was very difficult for me, but I felt worse for my older brothers, Jeff and Paul, whose biological father literally disappeared after divorcing my mother, never to show his loser face again. To this day, I cannot comprehend a parent who could walk out on his or her children. Some people are truly heartless and narcissistic enough to do such a thing, I suppose. I always felt bad that I had such an involved father and my brothers would never know theirs; even though my father adopted my brothers early on, their relationships were strained at best. You really couldn’t blame my brothers, because how could they trust a father figure again, let alone one so quickly? My dad was a six-foot-five handsome chap with tough good looks and piercing blue eyes. He also, unfortunately, happened to be bipolar. Back in that era, no one knew what bipolar was, so he was written off as moody, difficult, compulsive, and extravagant, with grandiose ideas of a better life that kept him in constant debt. But he was my hometown hero, and I desperately needed one. He always had my back regardless of the situation, and I loved him for that, although it didn’t make for a realistic later life. He used to say, “It’s you and me against the world, kid,” and as wonderful and comforting as that may have been at the time (especially considering I always felt very alone), it often made me wonder why the world was against us in the first place. I guess having several ex-wives can make you feel like you’re on the run or that life is based on a “you versus them” mentality. But he was super-cool and different from most dads, with his Indian jewelry and antique cars. He was literally the greatest salesman who ever lived, and through his constant, sometimes manic drive, he was able to convince me that I could be anyone and do anything. *   *   * After the divorce was final, my mother moved us to an apartment in the San Fernando Valley. Soon after, she would start dating a gentleman whom she met over the phone. He was cold-calling parents of boys who were of bar mitzvah age off a list he got from the local temple, offering his services to provide music and entertainment for the upcoming event. His name was Lionel Ames, and he was known for being the town’s most popular Jewish singer and bandleader, playing weddings and bar mitzvahs all around Southern California; once in a while he would play one of the local clubs on the Sunset Strip. He was every Jew broad’s dream guy: handsome, a freelance cantor/balladeer, and he could sing the shit out of “My Yiddishe Mama.” He also drove a purple Chevy Impala (though he swore it was blue), and I’m sure that gave him some Hasidic street cred. Lionel would soon become my mom’s third husband, just in time for my brother Paul’s bar mitzvah. The entertainment was free. And Lionel became my closest link to anyone involved in the entertainment industry. Lucky for me, he shared every tidbit he could. It took a special man to marry my mom with three boys in tow, and he had his hands full attempting to maintain some stability in a very emotional (and often turbulent) household. Throughout my childhood, my father tried to see me as often as possible, while also bouncing from one sales job to another. Over the course of his life, he worked as a stockbroker, owned a design studio, sold “questionable” land in the high desert, owned a pie restaurant, and spent twenty-two years selling hearing aids, among other things. He was a brilliant guy who could figure out my high school algebra homework even though he barely finished seventh grade. He had a photographic memory and a laugh that made you laugh. And he was funny as hell. Sure, he had swings like Benny Goodman, but not when it came to being a responsible father. Just about every weekend, I would stare out my bedroom window, waiting for his car to pull up, as it always would. As I grew older, I became more of a best friend and wingman than a son. As a teenager and young adult, I found this pretty exciting, but after a few more years of maturing into manhood, I realized it wasn’t the healthiest of scenarios. Our close bond meant that my dad recognized the toll their divorce was taking on me, and when I was nine, he introduced me to a child therapist. Nate was like a hip college professor who smoked a pipe, wore sleeveless sweaters, and drove an original yellow MINI Cooper. I had to leave my classroom every Thursday at ten A.M. to see him, and my excuse to all of my dumbfounded classmates was that I had a dentist appointment. They knew something else was going on, because in those days my teeth looked like hell, and who on earth has a dentist appointment every week? But in 1969, if a kid went to see a shrink, he had to be crazy, right? Life was already too shitty at school to let that one out of the bag, so I got the reputation as the kid who had to constantly go to the dentist. Which of course turned into “Gerstenfeld has like a hundred cavities . . .” Nate and I would walk around the neighborhood and talk rather than sit in his office. One of his exercises for helping me conquer my extreme anxiety was to coerce me into stealing oranges from people’s trees; years later, he admitted he just loved oranges. He was a compassionate and kind man when it came to communicating with children, and to this day we remain close friends. My father was always strained financially, and Nate told my dad he could pay for my sessions over time so I could continue with therapy. I never forgot that, because it made me feel that maybe I was worth something. As grateful as I am for the positive aspects of my early years, there is no doubt the more troublesome ones left their mark. At three years old, even though I appear happy in photos, I already have bags under my eyes that look like I’m burning the midnight oil while holding down two jobs to make ends meet. The bags have followed me throughout my life. They’re my earned stripes, my medals of horror. They’re from years of insomnia combined with my Semitic coloring, constant worrying, angry masturbation, my inability to roll with shit, fear of the Nielsen Family, feelings of inadequacy when showering, and the daily dread that comes with pursuing the American dream. Take it for what you will: nature or nurture. It wasn’t always pretty, but it got me here.

Some Laugh Out Loud Moments By Lupine Smile I would like to thank Gallery Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review When the Balls Drop. Besides being hilariously funny, Brad Garrett has some sage advice regarding aging, parenting, and everything in between. Like most great comedians, his self-deprecating humor had me laughing out loud. Between those moments, however, Brad Garrett chronicles his career from its humble beginnings to its greatest successes. I thoroughly enjoyed the snapshot into the life of this famous comedian and highly recommend When the Balls Drop. Whatever your stage in life, I guarantee you will find something to laugh at with Brad Garrett's unique perspective on his middle years.

By Louise Glass I loved Brad Garrett on Raymond and despite the title hoped to learn about his life on and off the show. First-he should have hired a ghost writer. I read this trite in under one hour and when I read a good book I savor it. This autobiography had me racing to the end hoping to find some things I enjoyed and there were a few.....very few.I am no prude but this book is filthy. I feel like I can picture his male appendage in detail after all the descriptive prose he allotted it.One thing bothered me a lot. He does NOT respect women. Possibly his problems stem from his parents many marriages and he suffers from lack of self esteem because he is drawn to prostitutes, waitresses, and strippers. He denigrates women whenever he can.I did enjoy reading about his start as a stand up comedienne working with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.Brad Garret is a good father, cares about children (he started a charity for ill kids) but as a boyfriend and husband we are chicks and broads out to steal every dime he makes.I wanted to learn more about Raymond and basically I know he wanted to make it with Patricia Heaton and the late great Peter Boyle farted a lot. Enough said. When I closed the book I was relieved to be over with it. I honestly cannot recommend it unless you are a huge fan of potty jokes from cover to cover. Read at your own risk.

By Kindle Customer The women are all "broads " trying to get your money and you might well use their vaginas to slide your credit card through. Yes! He says that. Brad is proudly pictured in blackface. Author rants. ALL l females are looking for security and ALL men are looking for excitement pages and pages of that kind of sweeping generalization. Tons of stuff about getting taken by golddiggers who do not deserve any of the income the man made

Slowly through the village street walked an elderly man, with bronzed features and thin gray hair, supporting his somewhat uncertain steps by a stout cane. He was apparently tired, for, seeing a slight natural elevation under a branching elm tree, he sat down, and looked thoughtfully about him.

The five hundred dollar part is clearly stated near the beginning. This book is written in the typical Alger style. Herbert is a poor boy who sets out, with the help of his great uncle, to clear his father's name of a crime he did not commit.

Even if you can find it, since it is an antique book you would probably pay big bucks. If you really want to read it again, go to QOOP.com where you can get it reprinted for a low cost.

Baa Baa Black Sheep, have you any . . . songs? Children love to sing and be sung to, and these perennial tunes are always top the kids’ hit parade. Little ones will love the repertory that includes “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” “Pop! Goes the Weasel,” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” And some—like “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “Pat-a-Cake,” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It” are more than just fun: they develop physical dexterity and teach parts of the body, too. All the songs are great for entertaining restless youngsters on car trips, during play dates, or on a rainy day.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nice book, but not exactly what I was looking for By Sierra B. A Children's Treasury of Songs - Illustrations by Linda Bleck.I had painstakingly selected and purchased more than a dozen books over Christmas for our little girl who's now 14 months old and am slowly working my way through reviewing them.I bought this book, hoping to complement a 3-CD set I got, which is an excellent compilation of kids' songs - 150 Toddler Tunes (by Kidzup). As my daughter loves the songs and can already recognize many of them, I wanted to find a picture book, so she can relate to some of the songs visually, and so I don't have to Google the lyrics when I sing to her.The illustrations in this book are undoubtedly precious, coupled with the added touch that they are raised, so it provides some texture for little ones. As several other reviewers had mentioned, the paper is thick; 2 pages are adhered together to make even sturdier, and the binding has a velvet covering. There are a total of 19 songs (see listing below). For some of the songs, people are depicted, but others, even though they are not animal songs (eg. London Bridge is Falling Down & Row, Row, Row Your Boat) animal characters are depicted as people. My daughter hasn't quite got into the book yet, probably in part due to her age (she loves her Touch and Feel and Lift-the-Flap board books) and in part because I'm just a tad wary about handing the book to her, and she just doesn't like a book as much when I'm keeping my firm hold on it. Also, several of the wordings are actually different from the songs on the CDs, so in the end, I can't really use the book and CDs together.I do wish all the verses were included in the songs though. I can understand if it's a repetition of the same verse (eg. Pat-a-Cake), but many have verses missing, like Do You Know the Muffin Man?, Pop Goes the Weasel, London Bridge is Falling Down (only 1st verse), Skip to My Lou, Ring Around the Rosie (it's written Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down! instead of Achoo! Achoo! We all fall down!), Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc.Overall, this is a good quality book worthy, I suppose, of its "Treasury" name, plus the lovely two-page spreads make up for its shortcomings, hence the 4 stars.List of songs:- Baa, Baa, Black Sheep- Do You Know the Muffin Man?- I've Been Working on the Railroad (2-page)- Pop Goes the Weasel- London Bridge is Falling Down- Row, Row, Row Your Boat- Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush (2-page)- Itsy Bitsy Spider- Yankee Doodle- If You're Happy and You Know It (2-page)- Skip to My Lou- Ring Around the Rosie- Pat-a-Cake- She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain (2-page)- The Bear Went Over the Mountain- Mary Had a Little Lamb- Old MacDonald (2-page)- Three Blind Mice- John Jacob Jingleheimer SchmidtNov 2014 Update:My daughter recently turned two, and she has been enjoying this book, looking and pointing at the pictures while singing the familiar songs with me. I find it rather enjoyable too, and we can usually go from cover to cover, so this book's definitely getting a workout.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Illustrations By Lanina R. Spencer This is really a great book. The author/illustrator chose great songs, and the illustrations are perfect. I also bought the nursery rhythms book which is also great. I am picky about books, especially nursery rhythms. These books are great! my 15 month old loves them both, but the song book is her favorite. Every toddler should have a song book and nursery rhythm book in their book collection (can you tell i am a teacher!), and these fit the bill perfectly!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Neat book with a good song selection. By GinDz I'm glad that I bought this book, but there are some issues with it. I like that it is large, but light. It has big, colorful pictures that are slightly raised, which I'm sure my son will like when he's old enough. The problem is that I will NEVER be able to leave this book alone with my son. Every other page is glued together, to make the pages thicker, but they are only glued in certain spots, making it very easy to rip them apart from each other. In fact, some of the pages weren't even glued together or glued all the way. It is confusing. The LULLABY book is the same way, but I don't regret my purchase.

My blockhouse was built at the foot of the mountain chain of the Rio Grande, on the precipitous banks of the River Leone. On three sides it was surrounded by a fourteen feet stockade of split trees standing perpendicularly. At the two front corners of the palisade were small turrets of the same material, whence the face of the wall could be held under fire in the event of an attack from hostile Indians. On the south side of the river stretched out illimitable rolling prairies, while the northern side was covered with the densest virgin forest for many miles. To the north and west I had no civilized neighbours at all, while to the south and east the nearest settlement was at least 250 miles distant. My small garrison consisted of three men, who, whenever I was absent, defended the fort, and at other times looked after the small field and garden as well as the cattle.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Too Flowery By Maureen Brightwell This book just went way too far into the adjectives while describing everything. If you removed all the adjectives used to describe his horse and dog alone the book would be reduced to about 50 pages. The Indian encounters passed in and out without much revealed however and the gist of the story line seemed to be his endless description of the nature and his hunting. I had to end the pain in the first third of the book and I'm a woman that enjoys poetry, just not when I'm expecting a frontier chronicle. I am spoiled by Allan Eckert I suppose where you get a real story, not just a description.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great read !!! By matt I was hooked within five minutes. I personally have a great interest in the timeline that this story takes place and although it doesn't specifically state dates I am assuming early to mid 1800's. It is written entirely in first person with excellent detail pertaining to description of person, place, and events described. No shortage of action and adventure either !!!!! Definitely recommended for anyone with an interest in the life of the pioneer/frontiersman. This book will surely have you seeing life from the characters point of view.

The American frontier was a difficult and challenging time that brought out the strength and vitality of a people willing to conquer it. This book is an enjoyable read into the mind and activities of one who accepted the challenge with gusto and a matter of fact outlook.

Review

“Perhaps no political treatise is more important to the development of modern political thought and yet so often misread than Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man. Claire Grogan’s comprehensively annotated edition of this classic text corrects the problem of decontextualized readings by not only reviving the tumultuous political debates with which Paine engaged, but also by distinguishing the unique style, argument, and overall significance of this revolutionary tract. With a critical yet lively introduction, this edition of Rights of Man is indispensable to anyone interested in understanding the development of 1790s radical thought and its relevance today.” ― Juan Luís Sánchez, University of California, Los Angeles

From the Publisher Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

From the Back Cover No individual's writing better exemplifies this transformation of the language of social and political change than that of Thomas Paine (1737-1809). And no individual has a better claim to be the world's first international revolutionary. His writings bear witness to his revolutionary activities, and provide us with a detailed picture of the evolving understanding of social and political change at the end of the eighteenth century.

CONTINUING TO DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF HUMANITY TODAY By A Customer The Rights of Man is a riposte to Edmund Burke's criticism of the French Revolution. Its message is the superiority of reason, in the form of Republican government armed with the Declaration of the Rights of Man, over despotism which holds populations in ignorance. With the American and French revolutions fresh in his mind, Paine was writing in a world on the threshold of freedom and that comes through in his forceful and forthright style. That said, and most important for the reader to appreciate, much of what he has to say still applies today. Paine in scathing in his critique of hereditary monarchy and privilege. He says "the idea of hereditary legislation is.......as absurd as an hereditary mathematician, or an hereditary wise man." He rejects the notion of government laws being justified by tradition and therefore irrevocable. His argument against Burke's defence of the 1688 revolution in England is perhaps the best in the book. Paine argues that the only thing that is truly hereditary is the Rights of Man : "The Rights of men in society, are neither devisable, nor transferrable, nor annihilable, but descendable only." The book is a superb polemic when both understood in its historical context and applied to world politics today. His arguments for reform of the House of Lords strike a particularly pertinent note. He expresses liberal doctrines that many people take for granted but in our own genocidal times Paine reminds us that many of the topics that impassioned him should continue to impassion everyone with an interest in humanity. The style of the writing may put off a few as many themes disappear and reappear throughout the book instead of being dealt with in a coherant whole. The fact that it was written in two parts and that he is one of the greatest pamphleteers of modern times should compensate for this minor irritation.

F Gori Thomas Paine's "Rights of Man" is truly a classic defense of self government and reprsentative republicanism. Paine copmletely demolishes Edmund Burke's defense of aristocracy and monarchy as outmoded and absurd institiutions. Paine shows the immorality of monarchy and the plunder that it commits on it's own people through high taxes, unjust property laws, and priveleges for the nobility. Paine shows the virtues a representative system has over the monarchial form. He denounces aristocracy and monarchy as "frauds" and based upon tyranny. The first review by Will Murphy critsizing Paine as a sort of statist is way off the mark. Paine did recommend many ideals of the welfare state. It must be remembered he was speaking to an age where a large wealthy aristocracy ruled alongside the monarch, living in luxury off the high taxes drained from the middle, lower and working classes. Paine was one of the formost defenders of freethought in religion, speech, and ideas. To imply Paine was a sort of 18th century fascist is utterly absurd and ahistorical. Paine was not an enemy of property, just an enemy of aristocracy, who in his day did not obtain property by hard work. Usually property rights in monarchial nations were written to favor the wealthy and powerful, and grant them priveleges at the expense of the populace. Paine completely destroys the ideal that a chosen few were meant or ordained by God to rule. If you love freedom, you can't go wrong with the "Rights of Man".

Cloyce Smith "Rights of Man" (1791-92) is Thomas Paine's famous response to Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution of France" (1790). Although it helps have read Burke's essay, a general background is sufficient to understand and appreciate Paine's basic and groundbreaking arguments.Paine and Burke were originally allies; Burke not only supported self-rule for the American colonies, he also supported the emancipation of the House of Commons from monarchical control and the independence of both Ireland and India. Many of his allies, then, were bewildered by his fervent opposition to the French Revolution; Burke drew the line between territorial autonomy from a distant or aloof government and the total overthrow of existing monarchies and institutions. For Burke, humankind's real enemies were drastic change and "unsocial, uncivil, unconnected chaos," and he proved himself a staunch defender of the status quo, of precedent, and of gradual reform.Jerry Muller, in his recent--and superb--book "The Mind and the Market" asserts that Burke's denunciation of the French revolution is "the single most influential work of conservative thought published from his day to ours." (This, of course, depends on what one means by "conservative.") Yet Muller and likeminded historians inevitably cherry-pick Burke's more attractive economic and philosophical arguments and foreground Burke's critique, in Muller's words, "of the revolutionary mentality that attempts to create entirely new structures on the basis of rational, abstract principles." (Muller doesn't even mention Paine, much less the example of the United States.) Such a focus inevitably sidesteps Burke's brief for the supremacy of European monarchical institutions and of the landed aristocracy. And that's where Paine comes in.With his usual acerbic wit and extravagant rhetoric, Paine, in the first part of his treatise, makes mincemeat out of Burke's sillier statements. For example, he finds especially unspeakable Burke's claim that that "the English nation did, at the time of the [1688] Revolution, most solemnly renounce and abdicate [the right of self-rule], for themselves, and for all their posterity for ever." Paine correctly challenges the primacy of a decision made by members of that generation over desires of other generations, questions the right of any generation to surrender the rights of their descendants, and notes that "government is for the living, and not for the dead, it is the living only that has any right in it."He also chastises the English for a system of hereditary government that virtually guarantees unfettered rule by children, madmen, idiots, and foreign-born pretenders (and he certainly has plenty of examples from which to choose), many of whom led their realms into chaos and terror without the help of radical revolutionaries. And Paine argues that wars would cease with the promotion of democracy and the cessation of the selfish interests of absolutists. His critics rightly respond that the rise of democratic institutions has hardly stopped wars, although one might pose the counterargument that, relatively speaking, democratic governments go to war with each other much less frequently. In the second part, Paine proposes a radical agenda for an overhaul of the British government. Although his anecdotally based statistics and figures must be viewed with skepticism and a few laughs, the prescience of his proposals is startling: poverty relief, social security, public education, maternity care, homeless shelters, workfare, veteran's benefits, and progressive taxation. His is the agenda of the idealist: "When it shall be said in any country in the world, my poor are happy; neither ignorance nor distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want, the taxes are not oppressive . . . when these things can be said, then may that country boast its constitution and its government."Paine, of course, had the nascent United States to cite in support of his proposals, but he and Burke were debating these matters before the onset of the Jacobin Reign of Terror, which dismayed Paine and seems to have realized Burke's worst fears. Yet, throughout history, for every Robespierre or Lenin, one can find a Mandela or a Walesa; monarchies too were no strangers to upheaval. Paine hardly argued for "mob rule" or even "majority rule"; the French Revolution failed in part because it violated the fundamental tenet that the citizens of each nation have a right to choose whatever rule they please, even "a bad or defective government, . . . so long as the majority to not impose conditions on the minority, different to what they impose on themselves"--a caveat we all should take to heart in today's political climate.

Two in one book set, both on worthwhile subjects By Jennifer Not a bad deal, eh...two ebooks rolled into one...One is about beating the lazy bug that overtakes us sometimes, and the other is about discovering online income streams. Who wouldn't benefit from this kind of material? I wouldn't call myself "lazy" per se, but some of the author's psychological basis for human inertia did sound all-too familiar. Sometimes we all need a swift kick in the duff when the chips are down. The grand old wisdom of Ben Franklin is spoken highly of, "early to bed and early to rise" That is a hard one for me to take in as I have always been a "night owl" from Day One. Still, not impossible. The world does most of its turning in the daytime. The second book, on income earning...Just about every one of these books you pick up is going to be filled with different ideas, some that you may know about, some you are just now hearing of and some will be feasible for you but probably not others. Although I have to disagree with the author's assumption that Justin Bieber is an "entertainment great". (from the chapter talking about Youtube) Stock trading...sounds good for people who know what they are doing. Subletting your spare room....didn't know this went under "passive income" but I guess it does...I wish I could do that, but the second bedroom is already used as my office....still, not a bad idea for those with extra rooms that happen to be very shrewd. A lkot of options considered...I'm surprised that the author or authors did not include Fiverr in the freelancing chapters because just about everybody well-versed on online income earning is raving about them! I guess...OK read...a few new things I learned.

Awesome book by a true, certified legend in our Hip Hop culture!!! Not only was it a fun read but very informative as well. Goes deep into the days when Hip Hop was at it's peek & tells the story 3 of the most legendary yet underrated breakdancing crews of the early-mid 1980s: THE DYNAMIC ROCKERS, THE DYNAMIC BREAKERS, & more importantly, THE DYNAMIC DOLLS & their place in HIP HOP history.Kim "Kim-A-Kazi" Valente does a magnificent job in her autobiography by informing the reader about these often overlooked breakdancing crews who took New York City & then the world by storm. She goes in detail about her successes, struggles, & at times failures. A story full of great friendships & also betrayals.I highly recommend this book to all of those who were a part of Hip Hop in it's infant stage (1980s) as well as those who appreciate real history ( in this case Hip Hop ) & not those watered down versions others always seem to write about with the same usual characters. This is as authentic as it gets.
