From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. From Booklist Considerably abridged from what Needle characterizes as Herman Melville's "enormous . . . long and rambling, even obscure" novel, this reworking, with moody illustrations on nearly every page, won't look out of place on a coffee table but still offers plenty of substance. Needle links passages of the original book, ranging in length from one line to several pages, with extended, ruminative summaries and his own comments, which are distinguished by a lighter typeface. Benson ably captures the tale's gloom and grandeur with a plethora of strong character portraits and other illustrations, mostly rendered in shadowed, atmospheric pen and ink, that burst into full color when the white whale arrives on the scene. Closing with a glossary of nautical terms and a labeled cutaway view of a typical whaling ship, this version will appeal to readers who might be after a richer literary experience than Will Eisner offers in his graphic novel retelling (2001) but are still reluctant to immerse themselves in the pleasures of the full-size leviathan. 369 of 383 people found the following review helpful. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss By Caraculiambro Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. 591 of 620 people found the following review helpful. This book is gonna make it! By Adam Roberts Finishing "Moby Dick" goes up there with my greatest (and few) academic achievements. It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare.And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment).The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

Moore Essential for any lover of great poetry, and certainly for any fan of Oscar Wilde is his great poem, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol." Scarcely the only thing he wrote after his return from his notorious 2-year prison term, The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a moving and tragic account of one man's suffering. One could go on and on - writing hundreds of pages in essay form - about the indignities and injustices of prison life, but this goes toward saying it much better than any ivory tower intellectual argument ever could. Wilde, winner of the infamous Newdigate Prize For Poetry at Oxford University, had long been an immaculate poet - an a born writer - but he practically anandoned the form after his marriage and the start of his career as a playwright in the early 1890's (aside from that strange amalgram of a poem, The Sphinx.) And yet, this is almost exclusively the only thing Wilde wrote after his release before his untimely death in 1900. Thankfully, the great artist went out with a bang. The Ballad fuses some of the best and clearest writing I have ever read in the English language with a poetic sensibility and a true and tragic sense of real suffering, thereby creating one of the great poems of all-time.Many anthologies of Wilde's writings are available, and perhaps buying a book that simply includes this lone poem is questionable. I definitely suggest that you go for a Complete Works if you are new to the author; however, if you'd like a travel-worthy copy of certain smaller works - such as this poem - then editions such as this will serve you well. Besides, this edition has as well those beautiful paintings to go along with it - something I'm sure Oscar himself would've loved.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant poem, but a poor editing job By C. Deats The Ballad of Reading Gaol is truly a fascinating poem. Wilde's valorization of the tragic murderer, "...each man kills the thing he loves... the kindest use a knife because the dead so soon grow cold", provides a poignant commentary on the transience of love. However, this book is marred by what seem to be terrible typos: "But their were those amongst us all..." "And knew that, had each go his due..." "Mad mourners of a corse!" I haven't read any of the other versions of this poem, and can't tell you if they're better, but for the extra money this costs, I expected more from the publisher. Five stars for the poem, but only one for the presentation because of its errors.

How very late-20th Century egocentrism to be asked to RATE something which has been a dip-and-taste book for decades. I'm a writer, I loved it. I don't give a damn about sexual proclivity, but you may turn up your nose because of the author, no matter the literary merit. I did not treat it as a page-turner, you should not either.

Some worthwhile info, but assume you're already a seasoned pro in affiliate marketing By Jennifer This, like many short ebooks, is straight and to the point...The author is basically giving readers a rundown on how to profit from promoting newly launched products and especially encourages people to go for the top-dollar items...The chapter or section, rather, that talks about setting up your website was mostly information I am familiar with, as I am no stranger to domain and host registration, Wordpress, and plugin's. Good information for those not too familiar with that aspect, but it's stuff I knew about prior to now. Then the development of your website regarding certain products is delved into; so I suppose that it was written with those who had already dipped their toes into the affiliate marketing waters, in mind. Me, I only know enough to ask...I know what affiliate marketing is, b y definition, but not much else on the topic..which led me to get it in the first place...Might be worthwhile if you are already an affiliate marketer looking to step up your game a little. PS: If you read the section about Wordpress, Fantastico Deluxe has been replaced by Quick Install as of late.

By MysterEO This book deserves five stars because the author taught me not one, not two, not three, but perhaps ten or more good tips for affiliate marketing... and I don't mean Clickbank $50 products (which are good, too, but...) I mean, he showed me where to find and sign up as an affiliate for product launches that might cost $2000 or more, where the affiliate commission might be $1000... That tip, alone, is worth 5 stars.And he showed me how I can compete with the Big Gurus (those with years of experience and a huge following of loyal fans... like me...) and convince my contacts to buy through me, because my bonuses are extremely valuable. I won't say what he does, here, because you should buy the book to find out, but it is very clever... So far, this book really deserves ten stars, if I could give ten stars.And there are other tips... So many books repeat and repeat the same things... this book has original ideas.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Homage to J.G. Ballard and more By Jack M. Haringa For the first 250 pages, Christopher Fowler's The Sand Men is the best J.G. Ballard novel that J.G. Ballard didn't write. It fits neatly with the latter run of the late author's work, echoing themes and settings present in Cocaine Nights, Super-Cannes, and Kingdom Come: the dissociation of the ex-patriot, the isolating irreality of the mega-rich enclaves, the futility of noncomformity in gated communities, it's all here. This is a knowing homage that incorporates Ballard's distinctive style, melding it with Fowler's own to keep from being pure pastiche.But Fowler is also--perhaps primarily--a horror author, and the horrific inevitably asserts itself in his work. As with his previous novel, the exceptional Nyctophobia, Fowler treads a line of ambiguity. There might be something deeper and more far-reaching than the wealthy hands guiding the construction of the Dream World resort in Dubai. The protagonist's observations are called into question, not only by people who might have ulterior motives but also by her own self-examination, and we are offered rational and realistic explanations for events. Fowler uses all of this material to touch on many contemporary concerns, from the problematic nature of cultural imperialism to the exploitation of working classes in projects driven by globalized economics.As with most Ballard novels, Fowler's book is a slow burn, and there are significant events that happen "off screen," which might frustrate some readers. The plotting is deliberate and the descriptions careful, all of which leads to a rewarding read in the end.

And it is funny because I've read a couple of novels recently that tackle the growing Middle East in terms of pushing a closed society into open excess and decadence. David Eggers wrote a similar type of setting; though a bit of a different book. There have also been a few others. And so far none have truly been able to juggle the mix of placing an outsider in a society trying to juggle becoming the playground for an open culture that wallows in wealthy consumption and a society that suddenly has that level of wealth but a culture that is deemed repressive and incredibly archaic.And this somehow just does not find the right plot and characters to utilize this setting. This type of juxtaposition that is just too large to just blend into the background. Instead there is an oddness to how the plot. the mystery, unfolds. Coincidence in the end seemed to be relied on too much for me, Draining the story of suspense and leaving me lacking any sense of true intrigue.

Just Because You're Paranoid Doesn't Mean They Aren't After You By Sam Sattler Having lived the ex-pat life in a Muslim country or two (although only in the poorer, more politically chaotic ones), I was immediately drawn to the premise for Christopher Fowler’s The Sand Men. Fowler’s novel happens to be set in Dubai, one of the richest of the Arab countries - but what even the richest Muslim nations have in common with the poorest ones is a huge divide between the rich and the poor. It is almost as if the two groups live on different planets, and ex-pats thrown into the mix do not always handle themselves properly when exposed to such a glaring contrast.Lea and Roy Brook are in the financial struggle of their lives in London when Roy receives a job offer from a company building several luxury hotels in Dubai. Roy is out of work and the young family is simply hanging on for dear life, so Roy’s acceptance of the job offer is really a no-brainer. But after she has moved into the huge company-housing compound with Roy and their fifteen-year-old daughter, Lea begins to wonder about their decision.The ex-pat compound has developed a subculture of its own, one that is only remotely similar to anything that Lea has previously experienced. The ex-pat wives, although they are not forced to give up any of their rights, are almost eager to spend their days in mindless cooking classes, ladies groups, and puttering around the house while their husbands do the important work. These women may not be quite of the Stepford Wife variety, but they are most definitely the next best thing. Lea, a magazine writer in her old life, is not content to live that way for the two-year term of her husband’s work contract, and almost immediately, her attitude brings her to the attention of a handful of likeminded spirits – and a few sinister people who want to keep her from stirring up trouble.The Sand Men is one of those thrillers in which the good guys find it almost impossible to tell the difference between ally and enemy – and as players come and go, Fowler makes certain that his readers face the same dilemma. Basically a girl meets a city man who is lost out in the wilderness while she is trying to escape a evil man that killed her brother but now wants to force her to be his wife. The city man helps her the best he can until they get to a town and he has to go to his very ill mother by train and leave the girl behind. The girl eventually loses her pursuers and makes her (very long) way to her relatives. She finds Christ and become a Christian while living with her very rich grandmother. She by chance meets the city man again this time as a beautiful rich heiress. She gives him a Bible and he reads it and become a Christian while she is in Europe with her fading grandmother. Her grandmother dies and she comes back and they soon fall in love afterwards. After they get married they go back to her old home and pay to have a nice church built and started there for the montain people.It was ok but i didnt think it had enough details on the religious part of the book. I love Christian novels so that was a real disappointment. But for the price ($0.00) its an ok read.

Simple But Preachy By Mimbelina The sole survivor of a family that slowly died out under the harsh living conditions of early pioneer Montana, Elizabeth flees from the man who killed her last brother and seeks escape in the East, where she hopes to find her long-lost grandmother and finally go to school. Though raised in relative isolation without the benefit of a formal education, Elizabeth's intrinsic grace and refinement capture the interest of a rich young city-bred man she meets on her escape. They aid each other, finding solace in their quiet companionship and in the conversations about things deep and meaningful. They are forced to part when they reach civilization, but each carries the memory of their budding friendship into the world. After several harrowing experiences, Elizabeth finally finds her grandmothers, learns she is heiress to a large fortune and is installed into the social whirl of Philadelphia. Despite the pressure to become a slave to fashion and society, she never loses her quiet, humble nature. If anything, she becomes even more beautiful and refined as she gains knowledge both social and spiritual. It's no wonder that her "man of the wilderness" pursues her when they finally meet again by chance. But will her belief that his heart belongs to another prevent them from finding happiness in each other's arms?I read many of Grace Livingston Hill's books when I was a girl and I loved every one of them. When I saw this as a free Kindle book, I couldn't help but download it! I don't know if this was just one of her less successful books or if I've out-grown them, but I didn't find it as satisfactory a read as I did previously. Though the plot is interesting, the characters are rather flat and the narrative commentary is almost preachy. I do enjoy a good Christian novel, but the way that Hill writes in this book is just a little bit too overbearing. Though I wouldn't pan it altogether, it's certainly not a high recommendation.

Wodehouse books about the daffy doings at Blandings Castle, and is exceeded only by Pigs Have Wings.If you have read any of the P.G. Wodehouse books about Blandings Castle, you know that the proprietor, Clarence, ninth Earl of Emsworth, is a simple man who simply wants to be left alone to contemplate his prize-winning pig, The Empress of Blandings, who has won the silver prize three years running in the fat pigs class at the Shropshire Agricultural Show. But he is beset by sisters who want to organize his life . . . and that of everyone else. The most frequently present of these sisters is Lady Constance Keeble, who is in residence in this book.Lady Constance is a widow and has her eye on a wealthy American, James Schoonmaker, whose daughter, Myra, has been brought to Blandings Castle by Lady Constance to keep Myra from marrying a curate, a poor but honest man. Lady Constance has no truck with poor people and she's confident that James Schoonmaker would feel the same way.The castle also contains Clarence's secretary, Lavender Briggs, who desperately wants to start up her own typing bureau but lacks capital; the Duke of Dunstable, who thinks everyone else is potty and wants to save a penny wherever he can; and Clarence's grandson, George, who has a new movie camera from his grandfather. In the process, that allows Freddie to pull the strings almost as well as the fairies do in some of Shakespeare's lightest comedies.Like all of the best Wodehouse stories, this one positively reeks with humorous names (such as George Cyril Wellbeloved, Clarence's pig man), class humor (fat-headed upper class types being shorn), irony (the simple is exalted over the complex and pretentious) and never-ending humorous confrontations and contretemps.Save this book for the next time you need cheering up. It's a perfect tonic!

Wodehouse wrote yet another delightful tangled tale in this addition to the Blandings Castle saga. As usual, he weaves a celtic knot of plot in and around Blandings Castle, this time involving Lord Ickenham (a.k.a. Uncle Fred) and his young friend Bill Bailey (who of course comes under another name); Myra Schoonmaker and her father, James Schoonmaker; the Duke of Dunstable and his nephew, Archie Gilpin; Lavender Briggs, Lord Emsworth's new secretary; and the usual Blandings cast including Lord Emsworth, Lady Constance, and Beach. Two love stories interweave as well as once again a plot against Lord Emsworth's thrice-prize-winning pig, Empress of Blandings. Great fun!

By Mostly Mozart Pongo Twistleton's Uncle Fred, the Fifth Earl of Ickenham, is dedicated, in his own words, to spreading sweetness and light wherever he goes (others have less complimentary words for what he does). In aid of this objective, he has previously appeared at Blandings Castle in the guise of the noted nerve specialist Sir Roderick Glossop, and been discovered as an impostor. While he remains a favorite of Clarence, the Ninth Earl of Emsworth and the proprietor of Blandings Castle, he is extremely unpopular with Clarence's sister Constance, who actually runs the place.No Blandings Castle novel is complete, of course, without at least one impostor, sundered hearts that must be reunited, the threat or actuality of the theft of the Empress of Blandings (the Earl of Emsworth's prize Berkshire sow), and an abundance of farcical monkey business. Wodehouse supplies all of these, plus the presence of the two Earls, each one of the great characters in literature, and Alaric, the Duke of Dunstable, an impossibly rude man and the perfect foil for Uncle Fred.All in all, a marvelously funny book by the greatest master of farce ever.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good for when reading beside the fire By A Customer I found this book on my mother's shelf, and found it interesting. Set at the end of the Civil War, the focus is on a Southern girl called Miss Lou who was orphaned at a young age and raised by her aunt and uncle. At 18, she wishes that her guardians would see she has grown up. When the battles of the War start reaching the plantation, the characters are challenged in ways they could not have predicted. While sometimes hard pressed to understand what the slaves were saying (the author writes in the manner they speak and doesn't use correct spelling), I found them portrayed in a different manner than is in the books written today. They had their superstitions and were limited in their education, but faith, hope and love were certainly their strengths. Miss Lou is wonderful; she, although inexperienced, has the courage and gumption to stand up against injustice, whether against her or others. These qualities earn her the respect of almost everyone around her, espacially a Yankee soldier who befriends her. The only thing truly disappointing about this book was the end. It cuts off to a description of what the end was supposed to be like. I do not know if the author died before he could complete the book or if it was intended to end this way. But if you have an imagination then the characters in the book will come alive and end it for you.

A minor stumbling block was reading the dialect that the slaves used. That being said, the great thing about this book was that there was NO condescension shown toward the slaves by the author or the heroine. The plot centers around the Union Army coming to a plantation in the South, and it was not only tensely exciting, but accurate. The author deserves my belated respect.

About the Author Richard Garnett C.B. (27 February 1835 – 13 April 1906) was a scholar, librarian, biographer and poet. He was son of Richard Garnett, an author, philologist (historical linguist) and assistant keeper of printed books in the British Museum. Life Born at Lichfield in England, and educated at a school in Bloomsbury, he entered the British Museum in 1851 (the year following his father's death) as an assistant librarian. In 1875, he became superintendent of the Reading Room, in 1881, editor of the General Catalogue of Printed Books, and in 1890 until his retirement in 1899, Keeper of Printed Books. His literary works include numerous translations from the Greek, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese; several books of verse; the book of short stories The Twilight of the Gods (1888, 16 stories; 12 stories added in the 1903 edition); biographies of Thomas Carlyle, John Milton, William Blake, and others; The Age of Dryden (1895); a History of Italian Literature; English Literature: An Illustrated Record (with Edmund Gosse); and many articles for Encyclopaedias and the Dictionary of National Biography. He also discovered and edited some unpublished poems of Shelley (Relics of Shelley, 1862) and edited the republication of the newly discovered poetry collection Original Poetry by Victor and Cazire in 1898. His poem "Where Corals Lie" was set to music by Sir Edward Elgar as part of Sea Pictures and was first performed in 1899. Long interested in astrology, in 1880 he published a monograph on the subject, "The Soul and the Stars", in the University Magazine under the peusdonym "A.G. Trent"; ill health prevented him from writing more on the subject. The writer, critic and editor Edward Garnett was his son, the translator Constance Garnett was his daughter-in-law, and the Bloomsbury Group writer David (Bunny) Garnett was his grandson.

Price Richard Garnett created this tongue-in-cheek fantasy collection as a salute to the classics and such values as reason, moderation, and learning. In the title story, he takes the side of Prometheus, who gave fire to man, and the entirety of the Greek pantheon as their quarrels are supplanted by the enthusiasms of a new era. In "The Demon Pope," Sylvester II's love of wisdom and learning allow him to easily best Old Lucifer.Garnett gently pokes fun at humanity at its worst, suggesting that foolishness may be our predominant sin. The stories produce smiles and modest chuckles, their final message a sense of wistful optimism -- perhaps all is not lost.I first came across this collection while in graduate school, close to 35 years ago. I'm pleased to see it in print and readily available.

Charitable Journey By aron row At first I was mesmerized by this beautifully illustrated chronicle detailing this Cuban immigrant’s rags to riches ascent to reach the American dream of affluence. Paralleling this account of his life successes are the engrossing entries recording impressions from his walking pilgrimage along the 500 mile trail of El Camino de Santiago. Starting from France and inching across Spain, the monuments, towns, churches, and personal encounters that he made are warmly described. The impetus for this journey was to generate monetary pledges to assist in treatment of chronically ill children at Miami Children’s Hospital. Throughout the book, Mike Fernandez constantly boasts of his business acumen learned through trial and error. The text of his pilgrimage is interspersed with helpful hints on how to succeed in life, and specifically in the business world. Letters from business associates, friends, family members attest to their admiration and love for this entrepreneur. Descriptions of his relatives and their achievements embellish the text. The trek along the El Camino trail has been aptly described by others, this version with its accompanying text is more fitting for a personal family history. Currently noted as a billionaire in the health care industry, some dissonance assaulted my senses as this volume morphed from a memoir into a paean for a mogul.

In the book, we meet his beautiful family: his wife, Constance, his four sons, George, Alexander, Michael, and Cristofer, his daughter, Michelle, his parents, Lieba and Mario (Mami and Papi), his sister, Pilar (Pili), and his granddaughters, Stella and Daniella. This book is dedicated to Constance, and to the rest of Mike's family.Humbled by the Journey resembles a travel journal, complete with dated "journal entries" and photographs of the trip, and of his family. The book has an antiqued look and feel to it. Mike says he wrote this book for the sake of his children, and for those who follow them, so that they will know their history. Humbled by the Journey has a message for everyone: "You have to take care of those who come after you."This memoir provides the history of his family, and focuses on Mike's El Camino walking journey, from the French town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago, Spain. Why did Mike walk El Camino? When Mike's granddaughter, Daniella, was 19 months old, she needed open-heart surgery. Thankfully, her operation at Miami Children's Hospital was a complete success, and Daniella is fine. But while Mike was at the hospital, he met a mother in the waiting room who was worried about her child. This meeting changed Mike's life. After talking to this distraught mother, he realized that there are many others in the same situation, who have children needing health care that they can't afford. Throughout the book, Mike calls the journey rigorous and magnificent--I'm sure that it is! I love to walk, and perhaps one day, I will also walk El Camino, which I've been interested in since seeing the movie The Way. Mike hopes his book will inspire others to achieve their dreams and to share their blessings. Blessed to be a blessing!In Humbled by the Journey, Mike refers to his walking journey, as well as to his journeys in life. As mentioned in my spotlight post, Mike was born in the rural town of Manzanillo, Cuba. During revolutionary times in 1964, his family was exiled from Cuba, when Mike was 12. They traveled first to Mexico and then to America, and soon moved to New York City. Mike desired to attend Xavier High School in NY, and worked hard to pay for half of his tuition. At Xavier, he met a very important mentor, Father Duminuco, who, in addition to his parents, helped Mike develop strong values and character. After high school, Mike studied architecture very briefly at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, then left college to enlist in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division in 1972. One day, he jumped out of a C-130 aircraft at 1,250 feet as required, but his parachute only partially deployed. Needless to say, he was greatly relieved when it finally did open fully, about 300 feet above the ground. The realization that he could have died that day gave him a new appreciation for and approach to life, which made him more productive and driven. Over the years, with passion and perseverance, Mike became a very successful entrepreneur, business owner, and philanthropist. Although Mike's study of architecture was quickly abandoned, ground will be broken in 2015 for Xavier's first new building in a half-century, the Duminuco-Fernandez Building. Mike calls himself fortunate to have led such a life, and is grateful for it. His business partner and friend, NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, praises Mike and says that he's "honest, smart, caring and committed". Mike shares a lot of tried and true, valuable business advice in this book, his ideas and ideals. Chapter Six: Doing Good Business, Doing Good Work features tips for succeeding in business. Mike says that "every business deal has to be a win-win". I really enjoyed this aspect of the book, and Mike's philosophy of doing business in a helpful and honest way is outstanding.The tone of this book is honest, humble, friendly, intelligent, encouraging and inspiring. What a fascinating memoir, about an extraordinarily generous humanitarian! Although Mike has been extremely successful financially, he's down-to-earth, giving, and grateful. It comes across in this book. All proceeds from book sales go to The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, a nonprofit focused on early childhood education and “school readiness"--making high-quality health, education, and nurturing available and affordable for all children. The idea is simple yet profound: if children are nurtured at an early age, they will do better in the present and future, which will benefit everyone.

Hardy The first account of the saintly man that reforms a prostitute, falls in love with her now saintly product and she spurns his advances because now she has offered her life to the Lord. It's a lot of fun to read France's novel and then watch the movie "Miss Sadie Thompson," with Rita Hayworth and Jose Ferrer, Rita playing a sort of Thais. There is an opera by Massenet and several movie versions based on a Maugham's short story, "Rain," that, I believe, plagiarized France's Thais. No matter what, Thais makes fun reading and Miss Sadie Thompson makes fun watching, though the movie was sanitized by the Hays Code. Both open the gates to watch religious zealotry and religious hypocrisy in action, like we see now among Republican candidates.

About the Author

Now an independent consultant, he continues to advise his clients but also speaks extensively around the world on corporate governance, risk management and business ethics. Steve holds an MA from Christ Church Oxford, is an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, has been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire and is the author of Managing Fraud Risk: A Practical Guide for Directors and Managers published in 2012 by John Wiley & Sons.
