4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Rollicking post-WWI historical adventure yarn By Dia Critical Set in 1919 in Vladivostok, Triple Spies tells the tale of a former soldier in the American expeditionary force sent to aid the doomed Czarist armies as the Bolsheviks consolidated power in the new USSR. Johnny is a John Wayne-like character who fights fair and always wins. He teams up with a Japanese spy from the 30,000 troops Japan has sent to help defeat the communists. The two of them battle a Russian spy as they travel by reindeer sleds across Siberia, hop ice flows across the Bering Sea and make their way to Alaska, Seattle and finally Chicago. The ethnic slurs are a bit off-putting, but apparently that was the vernacular of the day and no disrespect was intended by Snell, who wrote the book in 1920. The writing is spare, but the plot is pure action and adventure and is simple escapist entertainment.

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Christian "Nice Guys Finish Last" story. By Shirley U Jest Readers be warned: this is a religious and self indulgent book about why a poor "nice guy" can't find a girl to love him. The author claims he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour in 2nd grade, so that means he believes Jesus has a plan for him. Apparently that doesn't involve marrying or procreating so why doesn't he accept that? After slogging through the litany of physical issues he underwent as a child, why would he wish that on another generation anyway? And charging almost ten bucks for this self-pitying story with less than 200 pages? Nope. Barely made it through the sample. Can't recommend. I do recommend a good therapist for the author's many issues though.

Atalantis Major is a thinly veiled allegory describing the November 1710 election of the representative Scottish peers. The circumstances which surrounded this election were produced by the outcome of the previous month's General Election—a landslide for the Tories—and, to understand these circumstances, the impact of that Tory victory must be seen within the context of the political events of 1710.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Long ago and far away... By Christopher (o.d.c.) The scholarly introduction does an admirable job of placing this pamphlet in its historical context, providing a 'key' to its obfuscations, and demonstrating Defoe's (likely) authorship."Atalantis" is, of course, Great Britain, and Defoe has created an imaginary country in order to tell some truths about his own. Or at least, to put across the Whig view of things:Another Lord expostulated with him a little to admit such and such with the Men he proposed; he answers, My Lord, I am no Hypocrite, I am above-board; this is the List we will have; the Q....n approves of it, and I will have no other; and swearing again, By-G—d, says he, 'Tis indifferent to me, keep out but the Men we are against; but I will have no Go....phin Men, no Ma....bro' Men, no Squadron Men, in short, no Whigs of any Denomination; as for the rest, it is indifferent, any but them. How, my Lord, says this Nobleman, What will you take Tartarians, (that is, as our Jacobites) rather than the honest Gentlemen that have been so true to the Atalantic Interest: I care not what they are, says the Prince, so they be none of these. One could call the Defoe (the Whig) Swift's opposite number. Swift wrote Tory pamphlets in the same swinging language which makes early 18th Century prose so refreshing, even when the subject seems a little remote. I cannot award it more than three, because to me, it is partisan beyond belief:There was a short Dispute between the Prince and the Earl of Stairdale; but the Earl had so much more Honesty than the Party, and so much more Sense and Wit than the Prince, that indeed he cared not much to talk to him, but left him to Mareskine. He was too hard for them both, and having baffled them in Discourse, he was no more to be Bullied by them, than he was to be Wheedled; he told 'em plainly, They were betraying their Country, selling and sacrificing the Priviledges of the Nobility, making themselves Tools to a Party, and giving themselves up in a base Manner to the Pleasure of a few Men, who, when they had got their Will would contemn them, would love the Folly, but P....s upon the Fools; and as to their List, he scorn'd to come into it, or into any of their menacing Measures. This put a short end to their Attempts upon him; and indeed, had the other Lords been advised by this gallant Gentleman, they had broke all their Schemes; but they were not all united in their Resolutions, or equally determined in their Measures.

Think of to-morrow! oh, Heaven help me to-morrow! Ruined, disgraced, going out from the home where I was born, and forced into exile. I cannot bear it. We shall never have a home again, and our child will grow up homeless!" 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A real life adventure which happened 60 years before the famous "Midnight Express" was filmed... By Dimitrios This book almost smells of another long bygone era. The writer was a British captain of the Indian Cavalry in Mesopotamia and during a mission to sabotage the Turkish telegraph lines near Baghdad in late 1914, his little plane suffered damage and he was caught together with his pilot. He spent the next four years in various Turkish prisons, first at Baghdad, then in Iraq, after that at Afion Karahisar in central Anatolia and finally in Constantinople. He describes his life as a prisoner of the Turks with humor, pride and a heavy dose of philosophical attitude sometimes. He had a keen eye not only for his surroundings but also for the Turks themselves, their habbits and national characteristics, the various people then living within the realm of the decaying Ottoman Empire, and of course his two attempts to escape. The Turks of 1914-18 could be both extremely brutal towards their low rank captives but also friendly and tolerant towards British officers, turning the imprisonment of their enemies into a profitable business since they allowed the British officers to receive money checks from home, buy their own food and even do shopping excursions in the nearby city! After spending some years in captivity, the author found out that his transfer to a Constantinople prison would offer him the best chance for an escape, and he managed not only to reach the Turkish capital but also to contact a charming and very clever British young lady who provided valuable help to British POWs. This is a very nice small book, although it was not meant to be a serious history of World War I in Mesopotamia but rather an adventure read for a young British audience of that era. It contains no maps but only two sketches of the author's escape attempts and also two photographs of his funny and very good disguises.

What might we dare to expect from an actor’s autobiography, even one from a star as personable as George Sanders? In the case of Memoirs of A Professional Cad, we possibly get more than we deserve. George Sanders undoubtedly led a colourful, glamorous and even action-packed life, spanning the peak years of Hollywood’s golden age. But the greatest joy of his memoirs is how funny they are, and how penetrating their author’s wit. Endlessly quotable, every chapter shows that the sardonic charm and intelligence he lent to the silver screen were not merely implied.

George’s early childhood was spent in Tsarist Russia, before he was obliged to flee with his family to England on the eve of the Russian Revolution. He survived two English boarding schools before seeking adventure in Chile and Argentina where he sold cigarettes and kept a pet ostrich in his apartment. We can only be grateful that George was eventually asked to leave South America following a duel of honour (very nearly to the death), and was forced to take up acting for a living instead.

Memoirs of A Professional Cad has much to say about Hollywood and the stars George Sanders worked with and befriended, not to mention the irrepressible Tsa Tsa Gabor who became his wife. But at heart it is less a conventional autobiography, and more a Machiavellian guide to life, and the art of living, from a man who knew a thing or two on the subject. So we are invited to share George’s thought-provoking views on women, friendship, the pros and cons of therapy, ageing, possessions, and the necessity of contrasts (Sanders’ maxim: ‘the more extreme the contrast, the fuller the life’).

Previously out of print for many decades, Memoirs of A Professional Cad stands today as one of the classic Hollywood memoirs, from one of its most original, enduring and inimitable stars.

Memoirs of a Professional Cad, by George Sanders

About the Author

George Sanders was born in St Petersburg in 1906. He left Russia in 1917 with his family, who settled in England and had George educated at Bedales and Brighton College.

He made his British film debut in 1929, but it was in 1930’s Hollywood that he honed his distinctive, charming-yet-dangerous screen persona – the quintessential cad. Sanders co-starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent (both 1940), and went on to win an Academy Award for his signature role, that of Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950). He continued to work in films up until the year of his death in 1972.

In the 1940’s, Sanders’ film-star status was the impetus for his two crime novels, both featuring recognizably Sanders-esque heroes: Crime on My Hands (1944) and Stranger at Home (1946). In 1960 came a third book: his autobiography, fittingly titled Memoirs of A Professional Cad in which the line between fiction and fact is blurred even more convincingly – and wittily – than in the novels. By Grace Garcia Sanders was one of my all time favorite actors. Not because he was overwhelmingly great at playing someone else, but, he was consistent at playing himself. His intelligence comes though in his roles. This book Memoirs of A Professional Cad- is a great map of how he developed that cynical, almost removed detachment of being able to read people as they unveiled who they were. As the audience loved or hated the character, Sanders was your voice of what you were thinking ALMOST EXACTLY what you were thinking. I, obviously didn't know him in real life and I have heard that he was not a really nice person, but, this book is a good reminder of how intelligently a person can write about themselves, reveal not much about yourself and still manage to make people engaged in who they think you are! It is a great, fast and entertaining read.

This book should be required reading for any young man before marriage or a career choice. Mr Sanders prescience regarding human nature and the future of society in the United States demolishes the daily propaganda that now passes for news. With humor and straight talk the facade of democracy and opportunity is swept away to reveal a 21st century feudal system with lords of the manor being replaced by omnipotent corporations and the wealthy elite. While the serfs of old are replaced with techno-serfs perpetually distracted by the circus of never-ending inane sporting events and the psychobabble of politicians. Side splitting humor along with timeless wisdom. No wonder this book has been out of print and difficult to find for so many years.

George Sanders should have been an author - he writes intelligently and has keen observations of the movie industry, and people and life in general. A quick read and throughly enjoyable.

Review ''Trollope did not write for posterity; he wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket.'' --Henry James (author)''Trollope's 1875 tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business, and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover . . .is a classic in the literature of money and a ripping good read as well.'' --Amazon.com, editorial review''Trollope once said, 'In the writing of Barchester Towers I took great delight.' The listener gathers that, in the reading of it, (audiobook narrator) Simon Vance also takes great delight. Obviously, he relishes impersonating the dramatis personae . . . He delivers the fustian narrative with particular fluidity, verve, and grace.'' --AudioFile

Wilson Mary Thorne, orphaned (and illegitimate) niece of Dr. Thorne, has long been a favorite at Greshamsbury House--until Lady Arabella Gresham learns that her only son Frank is in love with Mary. The unhappy Mary is banished forthwith, because the Gresham family fortunes are so depleted that Frank must marry money.Frank, however, is one of the few completely honorable young men in Trollope's novels and remains stubbornly true to his love. Well, he does propose to another woman, at the insistence of his mother, but only with the virtual certainty that he will be rejected--as indeed he is. The lady is Miss Dunstable, one of Trollope's most delightful characters, a fabulously wealthy thirtyish heiress of an ointment company. She is a bold, witty woman, not beautiful, but attractive in her way, whose wealth invites countless proposals. After the rather complicated plot unfolds, the tables are completely turned, and Mary is eagerly welcomed by Lady Arabella (who, of course, has always loved her) as the savior of the family.I concede that "The Last Chronicle of Barset" is the best of the Barsetshire novels, but I dearly love "Dr. Thorne." The character of the doctor himself is strong and sympathetic. Frank, Mary, Miss Dunstable, Lady Arabella, Sir Roger Scatcherd, and such minor characters as Dr. Thorne's rival, Dr. Fillgrave (one of Trollope's punnily named characters), form a superb cast. And the outcome is thoroughly satisfying. I probably enjoyed reading this novel more than any of the others.

34 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Don't give up on this one By timothy k. Iverson "Dr. Thorne" is the third in the series of Barsetshire novels by Anthony Trollope. But unlike the first two, this has little to do with the politics of the Church of England. It is the tale of two lovers from different classes, and their struggle to keep their love alive in spite of social pressures to go their own ways. Unlike the first two novels, the plot starts out very slowly, with long descriptions of the history and conditions of the fictional "Greshamsbury" estate. The author even apologizes about 30 pages in for trying the patience of his readers. While "Dr. Thorne" lacks the crispness and economy of the first two novels ("The Warden" and "Barchester Towers"), it builds to a satisfying conclusion, and the author paints his usual precise characterizations. If you are a fan of Anthony Trollope, be patient with this one. You will be rewarded.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. The highest literary entertainment By mulcahey It's impossible to imagine a novel more completely entertaining than DR THORNE. You know from almost the first page how the plot will conclude, but the getting there is delicious. It is not as economically told as THE WARDEN, not as discursive (or laugh-out-loud hilarious) as BARCHESTER TOWERS. Instead it has balance and energy and the characters fairly sparkle, especially the "good" romantic hero and heroine. We are used to allowing the novelist a boring romantic interest, as long as we're given other pleasures along the way; but Frank and Mary may just be the most fun personalities in their own story. No mean feat, as any reader knows, the creation of virtuous characters who are also sharp and amusing enough to carry their weight. Frank's quasi-courtship of Miss Dunstable, the delightful if ugly "oil of Lebanon" heiress, is a brilliant stroke, and the happy ending is (very carefully) not reached until Frank has proven himself worthy of it.You feel in such good hands with Trollope. Nothing too awful will happen to anyone, at least not without much warning, and all the deserving characters will get their heart's desire. It's like sitting down after a good dinner over brandy with a friend who is incomparably witty, candid, and good-natured. It might, literarily speaking, be fluff, after all; but it's fluff raised to an art form.

While most players would love to consistently win money in poker cash games, instead, they struggle to break even in the smallest buy-in games. They frequently blame bad luck for their failures whereas in reality, they are simply not skilled at poker. The secret to mastering poker is not in memorizing hand ranking charts or following a predetermined system. You must learn to think for yourself so you can adjust your strategy based on your specific opponents. Strategies for Beating Small Stakes Poker Cash Games explains how.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a book that confirms my adjustments and more! By Chazbo54 I give it a 5 star for the 'intended audience'. If you've read all the 'older' Harrington books, 'Theory' books, etc., can hold your own in a 'home game' but cannot believe you're barely ahead of the others who you know play just 'ok' or badly, this book can really help you. For several years the 'older' books worked for me (basically play tight and be patient). That will still work against like-minded play, but it is boring as hell and you're leaving a LOT on the table. When my win rate slipped, I knew I needed an adjustment, and was getting frustrated while trying different 'plays'. This book basically tells you how to open your game up by being aware of situations and players, then 'playing the players' while still playing solid hands ('solid' for different situations, that is). The book is geared toward playing "exploitable" poker which works VERY well at most small stakes games. It does NOT work against very good players who know how to counteract those strategies and who are "aware" of what's actually going on at the table'. Thing is, if you do play at higher level games, you will be able to adjust (I think. I'm not there yet. ;-) ) I know I'll never play at the higher stakes games anyway, so mastering these concepts work for me. Many of the concepts I already had implemented, but it is good to have a 'framework' to fall back on and it helps to see where improvement is needed. Also, if nothing else, it confirms that the adjustments I already made from 'standard play' to win at low stakes were correct. When you deviate from what you learned as 'correct play' you wonder if it is a leak in your game even when the results seemed positive. It was nice to see in print that I was actually doing it right in many cases ! Yes, there is more variance in this method of play, but not all that much and it works MUCH better and is more fun than just playing ABC poker.

I have read quite a few books on Texas holdem (no need to list and bad mouth other authors) and none of them have explained concepts as easy as Jonathan little does. I only play small stakes cash games so it was great to finally read something that is geared specifically for the stakes I play. Im not concerned with learning the secrets of ultra high stakes poker players (as of yet anyways) because I don't play higher then a 1/2 no limit. Its amazingly easy to read, and the concepts and strategies discussed can be implemented immediately for quick results. I laugh to myself when I do the small adjustments He recommends only to see most players do exactly what he says they will do(things I have done in the past). I have struggled with being a winning player in poker for 13 years, that is going to change now. I have NEVER made it into the money at a casino tournament. Just after using a few of the strategies held in this book I booked my first cash. It was a small win, but none the less one that I have never experienced. Thats another point. This book is for cash games, But I find that many of the strategies discussed transfer over to tournament play as well. I cant wait to read his book on small stakes tournaments next! If you want to be a better player, buy this book. If you want to find leaks in your own game, buy this book. If you want to understand the thought process of winning players, BUY THIS BOOK!!! Also, google search Jonathan Little, and you will find a vast resource list of very affordable training information he offers. To the author, Thank you for writing this book.

I didn't learn that much but then again I already do most of the things he says to do. And you really can't hear it too often anyway. He makes some aggressive bluffs that I have yet to fully evaluate and though I follow the logic of his bet sizing advice, I can't quite agree with it. I just make too much from my big bets. (His sizing is fairly small, for low stakes buy hey, he's WAYYYY better than me so...)The strength of this book is its conversational tone that makes it accessible to the people who will benefit from it. No long algebraic proofs, no multi-page explanations of the rare expectations. So many poker books do this and it becomes an ironic situation where you have to be a good player to understand the explanation and if you are that good, you already know it!Little is the best combination of great author and great player available today. Ed Miller writes very well too (and is my fav poker author) but lacks the undisputed winning credentials of Little. If you know how to play but not how to win....if you are a winner but wonder why you're not winning more or if you are a solid winner but know that there is more money on the table than you're racking up at the end of the night this is the book for you. If you play mid-stakes or higher (5-10 or higher) you could skip this one. That's my opinion. Hope it helps.

The Windy Hill is a children's novel by Cornelia Meigs. A brother and sister learn about their own family's history in New England through a series of tales told by the Beeman. The novel, illustrated by Berta and Elmer Hader was first published in 1921 and was a Newbery Honor recipient in 1922. It takes place, as expected, in a lovely sea side location called Windy Hill. Its a story of two youngsters, 16 and 14 ish years old who are visiting their wealthy cousin in the country. This cousin, Jasper, seems uncharacteristically troubled about something, but is not forthcoming with the details. Oliver, the 16 year old, gets bent out of shape because his cousin Jasper wants him to meet a young lady that lives nearby named Elanor. So, to avoid this meeting he plans to walk to the train station and leave. On the way he meet this guy who is tending bees with his daughter Polly...

Devereux The story of two children who come to spend a summer with a single uncle and unravel a lot of family history thru brilliant storytelling and help in restoring a broken relationship between the uncle and his cousin. Thru the eyes of a young boy, however the story is for girls and boys alike as my 10-yr old daughter did not want it to end. The ending is not sugar-coated, but shows plainly the sometimes painful consequences of hurtful actions when a wayward cousin, although forgiven by his loving cousins, cannot be forget and forgive himself. It is a beautifully written book full of the children's adventures and a great mystery which unfolds chapter by chapter.

He's a real favorite. But. This visit there is something a bit off. Jasper isn't acting like himself at all. They're worried about him, and rightly so it turns out.The book opens with Oliver escaping or running away. Jasper has arranged for them both (Oliver and Janet) to meet someone--a cousin their own age, a girl. It's the last bit that decides it for Oliver. So off he goes in bit of a mood. But he meets someone very interesting. Two people actually. A man he calls Beeman, and a girl around his own age. And the 'Beeman' is quite a storyteller. They become friends, and, he brings Janet to meet them both. They eventually confide in him their worries about Jasper...Did I enjoy The Windy Hill? For the most part, yes. I liked the Beeman's stories best of all. These stories are adventure-packed. They also turn out to be true family stories. The book itself has some excitement--or action. The characters do more than sit around listening to stories. It concerns a flood. So plenty of drama is to be had.Windy Hill was a quick read. It was enjoyable enough. Perhaps not a 'must' read, but nice all the same.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 1922 Newbery Honor Book By Angie Lisle I re-read this book as part of my goal to read all the Newbery Medal and Honor books. As a child, I remember this book being a breath of fresh air after reading Hendrik Willem van Loon's 'The Story of Mankind.' That didn't change as an adult. This story chronicles the dynamics of an extended family, with one character, known as The Beeman until readers figure out who he is, doling out family stories to the main character, Oliver Peyton, and his sister, Janet. The Beeman's information becomes important as the story progresses and readers start to connect the dots. This book is built around the notion that children can figure out details on their own. For instance, this book starts without telling us when or where we are in time. I assume 1920s because of publication date; as for location, several clues like "by the sea" and "great Atlantic rollers , tumbling in upon the beach" point readers to the general area. The Beeman's first story is about Native Americans and gives us a better idea of location with the name of a medicine man: Secotan, a former tribe of North Carolina. And that sets the theme - readers are encouraged to use their heads to figure out the mystery before the end of the book reveals all.The writing reminds me of Mary Stewart (The Moonspinners, The Arthurian Saga), with passive prose and lovely descriptions of nature/gardens weaving around a mystery. This book isn't PC by today's standards but, for parents who plan ahead, this book offers an opportunity to begin discussion about changing stereotypes and the history of both racism and misogyny with their kids (example, the use of the highly-offensive word squaw to describe Native American women). This book documents the history of changing attitudes within American society, opening a door to talk about these issues and how the past affects today - which is another theme of this book: the past builds the present which builds the future. I advise parents to read this book with their kids for just that reason - they are our future and they can't change it for the better if they don't understand the past.

The United States in the Light of Prophecy or an Exposition of Rev. 13:11-17, by Uriah Smith

About the Author Uriah Smith (May 3, 1832 – March 6, 1903) was a Seventh-day Adventist author and editor who worked for the Review and Herald (now the Adventist Review) for 50 years. Uriah Smith was a church leader, in addition to being a teacher, writer, editor, poet, hymn writer, inventor, and engraver. When the General Conference was organized in 1863, Uriah Smith was elected as its first secretary. This was a position that he subsequently held five different times. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1874. With the founding of Battle Creek College in 1874, Elder Smith became the Bible teacher, a position he held for the next eight years, the last two of which he was also chairman of the board. Uriah also served as General Conference treasurer from 1876-1877. Uriah Smith produced many of the first illustrations that appeared in the Review and Herald. He also wrote a number of books, the most famous of which was Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation better known just as Daniel and the Revelation. In addition, Uriah Smith was an inventor who patented such diverse things as an artificial leg with a moveable ankle and a school desk with an improved folding seat. He died in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1903, at the age of 70, from a stroke on his way to the Review office. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting take on prophecy By C. Ferguson This was written in the 1800's, so it's quite out of date as far as prophecy is concerned, especially since the prophecies it expounds have not come to pass. Even so, it's interesting to see how Christian thinkers of that time interpreted the book of Revelation. It serves as a warning to us, that we should not be swayed by every wind of prophecy.

Granted he wrote this in the 1800's*? So basically everything he is describing as having happened made alot of sense but anything regarding the future is off.

This is the first history of finance - broadly defined to include money, banking, capital markets, public and private finance, international transfers etc. - that covers Western Europe (with an occasional glance at the western hemisphere) and half a millennium.

Charles Kindleberger highlights the development of financial institutions to meet emerging needs, and the similarities and contrasts in the handling of financial problems such as transferring resources from one country to another, stimulating investment, or financing war and cleaning up the resulting monetary mess. The first half of the book covers money, banking and finance from 1450 to 1913; the second deals in considerably finer detail with the twentieth century.

This major work casts current issues in historical perspective and throws light on the fascinating, and far from orderly, evolution of financial institutions and the management of financial problems. Comprehensive, critical and cosmopolitan, this book is both an outstanding work of reference and essential reading for all those involved in the study and practice of finance, be they economic historians, financial experts, scholarly bankers or students of money and banking.

This groundbreaking work was first published in 1984.

A Financial History of Western Europe (Economic History), by Charles P. Kindleberger

Review "The most important part of the revision [in this second edition] is in extending the treatment to cover much of the experience of the last 10 years of European monetary integration....Full of ideas and fascinating information. It is a lively cocktail that has proved immensely popular with both undergraduate and graduate students and also with others who simply want to be acquainted quickly with some aspect of European monetary and financial history. It is written in the felicitous style for which Kindleberger has become noted. This edition will prove to be as successful as its predecessor." --Economic Affairs"The best text available on the financial history of Western Europe. I find it fascinating to read a couple of pages and learn something new."--Philip Coelho, Ball State University"Excellent history, only one in the field."--Eugene White, Rutgers UniversityPraise for the first edition: "An astonishing achievement....A work of a vast range of topics...written with clarity, subtlety, and derived from sources in French, English, and German....A book anyone even pretending to a knowledge of monetary history must have."--Journal of Economic History"Will end up on many undergraduate reading lists, whilst its extensive bibliography will prove a boon to [those] working their way into the field."--Economic History Review"A splendid book....It reads like Professor Kindleberger talking--which is surely high praise."--The World Economy

About the Author Charles P. Kindleberger has written many influential books in economics over the past 60 years, the most recent of which are: Economic Laws and Economic History (1990), Historical Economics: Art of Science? (1990), and Mariners and Markets (1992).

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. An essential reference guide By Paul Donovan Kindleberger's work on financial history is designed as an undergraduate guide, but such is the wealth of detail and information that it serves as a useful reference tome long after the undergraduate work is completed. Kindleberger takes the reader step by step through the financial issues of the European economy as it developed from feudal to capitalist society. The explanations of the gold versus silver standard debate (bi-metalism) is particularly helpful and clear, given the complexity of the issue. The charting of the relative developments of the UK and Continental financial systems, and the advantages that they gave the British in the nineteenth century, are also well written.A reader looking for a wealth of data is likely to be disappointed. Figures are provided, but there are other books that will give reams of numbers for the economic historian (several of which are cited by Kindleberger - the references of this book alone are worth buying it for).Overall, this is widely and rightly regarded as a valuable contribution to the field of economic history.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Critical and seminal financial history By R. Robinson This is a book you will always find helpful as a necessary reference to come back to. It covers centuries and several nations, don't expect an almanac approach to the technical data but rather data built around short, straight to the point narratives. The book is well written, organized, and researched. This is how I prefer to read my financial history with an emphases on the content, accuracy, and consistency, rather than disguised polemic and political agenda setting, as is the current trend in financial history books (Harvard, Princeton press...im looking at you). This is not for the casual reader looking for introductory information. Nuff said.*Note* This affordable paperback must have been released right before I bought my copy, becuase I might have purchased it, but glad I didn't. Although the price is nice YOU WILL USE THIS BOOK (I handle my hardback at least once a month over the last 4 years and its pages are still tight, its a 2nd ed from 1993) and paperback's life span is not of that as a hardback. Consider that before you buy this edition.

I was actually inspired to read about the history of finance in Europe by the fiction books by Neal Stephenson called The Baroque Cycle, which is in part about the invention of the modern financial system, along with Pirates. It's really interesting to read about the real history.
