By Christy Butler I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone I know, Christian believer or not. It's an excellent financial handbook for young adults as well as adults who want to learn how to better manage the money they have and increase it to get the things they want. This book helped me to admit I was a "consumer" and encouraged me to develop a stronger "producer" viewpoint of my money. I'm on the road to financial recovery and it was easier than I thought.

Covers all the basics from a Christian perspective By Harold McFarland In "The Stewardship Model" author Michael Fluker takes a close look at three types of stewardship - time, personal and financial. For each of these types he breaks down the analysis to four types of stewards loosely based on the biblical parable of the wise steward. The four categories of stewards in his book are the Good Steward, the Efficient Steward, the Effective Steward, and the Lazy Steward. With this framework in mind he develops the "Stewardship Model", a basic non-technical model that anyone can follow to improve their personal management of time and finances. The bulk of the book is dedicated to money, debt, savings, and investments. In this section you will find no complex money theories or advanced economics, just simple straightforward basic financial advice. This is the kind of stuff that everyone should have been taught in school, but with a decidedly Christian slant. "The Stewardship Model" is a recommended read.

By Vernon Firestone What I found in this delightful, informative book by Michael Fluker is a life management plan! Though it is a book to help you plan finances it goes so far beyond that. Using Christian values, Mr. Fluker takes you on a journey that will also help you find your inner talents and strengths and use them to your advantage. It is a very informative and easy to understand book. A must read for anyone!

Brilliant By Historienne I encountered this book while writing an honors undergraduate history thesis on the revolt in the Vendee--which is the setting for this book. Ninety-Three is both a literary masterpiece and an historical commentary ahead of its time. Hugo carefully balances his personal belief in the French Republic, and his distaste for the methods used by the Republicans in 1793. His characters are vivid allegories, and the novel is peppered with small parables. It is a story where the "giants" of Robespierre, Marat and Danton become less important than three small children, where the Republic of Swords must face the Republic of Ideas.I highly recommend this for anyone studying the French Revolution. It is also a fine piece of prose.

Cassie Refer to Ayn Rand's non-fiction bood entitled "The Romantic Manifesto" There's an excellent introduction to Victor Hugo's Ninety-Three. That's what made me want to read it and why I continue to read it over and over.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Novel of ideas By John Hyatt A novel about the French Revolution. More a novel of ideas than of action and character. The opposing ideas are interesting, but the characters lack rounded complexity.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For free, sure, but abridged By Ann This version, translated by Victor Derély, is already in the public domain and thus for free. I have compared it with the French version entitled "Les Démons" (translated by André Markowicz) and the German version translated by Swetlana Geier. Turns out that many parts have been omitted in Derély's version (especially those dealing with the political situation in Russia, it seems to me).Examples from the first Chapter:In the unabridged versions, the first chapter contains nine subchapters. In Derély's version, there are only seven.Subchapter 6 (according to the numbering of the unabridged versions), talking about the trip to Moscow, has been considerably shortened and joined with subchapter 5. Subchapter 9 deals with opinions in Trofimovitch's circle on topics such as god, nationality and Russian peasants - all gone.Unfortunately and consequently, some of the truly entertaining parts are missing as well. I absolutely can't recommend this version.

The supper room of the Savoy Hotel was all brightness and glitter and gayety. But Sir James Willoughby Pitt, baronet, of the United Kingdom, looked round about him through the smoke of his cigarette, and felt moodily that this was a flat world, despite the geographers, and that he was very much alone in it.

I feel if I have lots of fun, laughs and smile often it will carry me thru the winter. In The Gem Collector, you will meet Pitt and Spike who for different reasons want to steal a gem - one for money and one for love in this delightful wacky, witty, story. I had a laugh on each page, loved every minute of it - and I can tell you after reading Wodehouse, it really does make the world easier to live in! Give yourself a break and read Wodehouse!

Thorsson A farce about gems, stealing, thieves and those trying it on!Oh Mr. Wodehouse! Where would we be without you! One of the finest witty wordsmiths who ever picked up a pen. When I need a smile, or a lift, or even a roll on the floor laugh I turn to one of the many wonderful works of Wodehouse. So many wonderful and delightful stories to choose from, and each one is from a different period in PG 'Plum' to his friends - life. While my favorite character is Psmith, how can I not enjoy the mutterings of Ukridge, or long to have my life saved from disasters by the likes of Jeeves.Stephen Fry wrote 'Without Wodehouse I am not sure I would be a tenth of what I am today...his writings awoke me to the possibilities of language. His rhythms, tropes, tricks and mannerisms are deep within me. But more than that, he taught me something about good nature. It IS enough to be benign, to be gentle, to be funny, to be kind.As laughter is the best medicine, perhaps we need a good dose of Wodehouse from time to time, and during these bleak winter months, in the dark time of the economy, Wodehouse is just what the Doctor ordered! One of the wordsmiths best!

Wodehouse was watching the wonderful Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (better known from "Black Adder" and "House") TV series "Jeeves and Wooster". That series put me on to reading as much as I could from this great writer.Pitt and Spike share a common albeit dark history-they were both jewel thieves. While one has reformed, the other still has quite a taste for mischief. Comedy, romance, and crime combine in this hilarious romp through luxurious surroundings.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Anachronistic chess tactics book with lots of upside By George Jempty I found the first couple of puzzles to be exceedingly simple (I solved them in seconds) but don't let this fool you -- 95+ percent of these puzzles are from games where both players are rated over 2400. You can get similar puzzles on chesstempo.com which is free, though admittedly so is this book if you have Kindle unlimited. On chesstempo.com you only pass if you find all the moves, but you can make the move(s) on the board until you reach the final winning position, which is unrealistic in comparison to how you would actually have to find tactics during a game. So an advantage of this e-book is you have to work it all out in your head first. Another advantage of this ebook compared to chesstempo is that you get to "play up" -- if on chesstempo you are only rated 1700 you will only see tactics rated close to 1700. In this book however you are seeing mostly tactics that I'm sure are rated 2000 and probably much higher on chesstempo. But a disadvantage compared to chesstempo is that there are only a couple of hundred puzzles, as compared to thousands. It is convenient to have these on your Kindle though, for instance I can work on them in bed where I don't have a laptop around before going to sleep. So it might even be worth the $5 for your Kindle, even if you don't have Kindle unlimited.

I am currently struggling with my finances and I have been spending too much time figuring out a way out of this and working hard to earn some more money. This is me alright. Thankfully, I came across this amazing book and I had the feeling that I am bound to change my life after reading this. And I was right. This book indeed has given me essential info on how I can improve my present financial condition. The action steps given here has been really clear and the good thing is that they have been proven to work. It made me understand what personal finance is and the concept of frugal spending. Also, the topic on investing has been done well here too. Budgeting and the others also cleared my previous thoughts. This book has been worth the read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. learn this on your own By Penelope Warner If you're struggling to handle your own personal finances, you should check this one out, because it covers many things dealing with that, such as frugal spending, various types of investing, budgeting, wealth acquisition, and debt management. What I like most is that the author writes in a way that anyone can understand, unlike some financial advisors one may hire to do their money management, but I also like that it doesn't just teach you how to live on a budget and save the money you're already earning. It also teaches you how to gain extra money, such as through investing.

This last summer, when I was on my way back to Vienna from the Appetite-Cure in the mountains, I fell over a cliff in the twilight, and broke some arms and legs and one thing or another, and by good luck was found by some peasants who had lost an ass, and they carried me to the nearest habitation, which was one of those large, low, thatch-roofed farm-houses, with apartments in the garret for the family, and a cunning little porch under the deep gable decorated with boxes of bright colored flowers and cats; on the ground floor a large and light sitting-room, separated from the milch-cattle apartment by a partition; and in the front yard rose stately and fine the wealth and pride of the house, the manure-pile

Christian Science, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

43 of 53 people found the following review helpful. funny even to a non-CS By A Customer This isn't one of Twain's best books, but it is a pretty hilarious send-up of Christian Science nonetheless. I think it is funnier if you know a little bit about the religion, but it probably doesn't seem as funny to people who actually practice the religion.A CS friend told me that CSs are fond of quoting passages from Twain that "prove" he became a fan of Eddy in later life. The quote they cite as proof is typical of the sarcasm in this book: "Mother Eddy deserves a place in the Trinity as much as any member of it. She has organized and made available a healing principle that for two thousand years has never been employed except as the merest kind of guesswork. She is the benefactor of the age."If the above quote strikes you as funny, buy this book. If you believe the quote is serious, I'd advise you to give it a miss.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. One of Twain's best-kept secrets By Cindy Lovell Mark Twain remains one of the greatest social critics in history, and this book is one of the best examples of his "pen warmed up in Hell." A critical thinker whose opinions were always based in his own experiences, research, and facts, Twain takes off the gloves and pummels Christian Science and its founder, Mary Baker Eddy. Twain's public attacks were covered by the papers, which typically included Baker's statements of defense. (On January 17, 1902, for instance, she publicly defended herself for her followers calling her "mother" Mary, a direct response to a criticism by Twain. "It is a fact, well understood, that I begged the students who first gave me the endearing appellative 'mother' not to name me thus. But, without my consent, that word spread like wildfire.") This book is a scathing indictment against Christian Science, yet a handful of satirical quotes by Twain regarding Eddy and her religion are offered up as "evidence" that Twain actually admired Eddy and approved of the religion. To know Twain, one must read Twain - and not just the quotes.A digression...Now Val Kilmer, a Christian Scientist, is test-marketing a new one-man show as Twain and making noises about a film depicting the Twain-Eddy story. Let's hope he reads this book and actually researches Twain's life. He would do well to sit in on several dozen performances by Hal Holbrook, who actually met Twain's daughter, Clara, when he first began performing as her father. Holbrook is a Twain scholar, and it shows in his portrayal; he has memorized hundreds of lengthy passages and quotes Twain verbatim - and in context. Kilmer is an Eddy fan, and it shows in his portrayal of a semi-drunk Twain delivering one-liners (quotes out of context). (Full disclosure: I have not seen Kilmer in person, only online clips of his trial run.) A vast body of research by Twain scholars exists that detail how Twain performed onstage, and it would serve Kilmer to access this information. The book is typical Twain - if you know Twain.

I came out of Penthouse Prison on a certain Monday morning in May. Let there be no misunderstanding about it; I came out by way of the roof. And the time was four in the morning; I heard the big clock over the entrance gates chime in a dull, heavy, sleepy fashion as I lay crouched on the roof under shadow of the big tower at the north end, and looked about me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A decent read By Grumpy Reader The book held my attention, if not my credulity. A fairly well-written thriller, but rather low-key. There is potential menace enough, but it doesn't become too heavy. Hard to believe- the characters act very unrealistically, there are coincidences too good to be true. That sort of thing. I can't say this is a forgotten classic or anything like that, but is better written than many a present-day work of similar type and similar failings.

I am disposed to believe that no novel reader in England has seen the little town of Bullhampton, in Wiltshire, except such novel readers as live there, and those others, very few in number, who visit it perhaps four times a year for the purposes of trade, and who are known as commercial gentlemen. Bullhampton is seventeen miles from Salisbury, eleven from Marlborough, nine from Westbury, seven from Haylesbury, and five from the nearest railroad station, which is called Bullhampton Road, and lies on the line from Salisbury to Ycovil. It is not quite on Salisbury Plain, but probably was so once, when Salisbury Plain was wider than it is now. Whether it should be called a small town or a large village I cannot say.

The Vicar of Bullhampton, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

40 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By mcerner The title of the book might lead you to refrain, since it implies that the story is about a country vicar. One wonders how exciting that might be? However, this book is probably one of Trollope's most suspenseful and well-rounded novels. You have a romance, an unrequited romance, and a young woman at the heart of it whose lack of fortune could lead her astray. Mary Lowther, visiting the vicar and her friend, his wife, receives a marriage proposal from Harry Gilmore, the local squire, who at the encouragement of the vicar, has fallen desperately in love with Mary. Mary has offered no encouragement, and despite the pressure of the vicar and his wife to accept the marriage offer, refuses. Once at home, she falls in love with a visiting relation, but because he is penniless, cannot marry him. Thus she is tossed about on the tides of marital opportunities, continually pressured by friends and family to turn to Harry Gilmore. This portion of the story is rather like a "one woman stands against the world" scene, and it is intriguing, frustrating, and ultimately inspiring as Mary finds her strength not just in love but in herself. If romance doesn't interest you, Trollope has thrown in a second storyline, one unusual in his books. A murder occurs, and the vicar sets about attempting to solve it because the suspect -- even he suspects him -- is a young man from his neighborhood who has been skirting the law and morality for some time. Add to that, we have the character of the beautiful Carry Brattle, seduced by a man outside of wedlock and then tossed out of her home by her insulted father, forced to turn to prostitution in order to eat and find shelter. Her trials and her reform, including her family's eventual forgiveness of her sins, is at once indicative of the harsh lives imposed upon women in Trollope's era and a hope for a future where women are not viewed as the property of men but as persons in their own right. Finally, the vicar does have his own story as he insults a nobleman in his parish and is thereby made an enemy, the nobleman going so far as to build a new church right up against the vicar's property as an insult to the vicar's faith and effectiveness as a man of religion. How this resolves itself is a lark! The story is exciting, and each storyline is so well intertwined that the switch from one to the other as the book progresses is smooth. Insightful, realistic, a pleasure to read By Constant Weeder Other reviewers have discussed the plot and the characters of this wonderful mid-Victorian novel; I would rather speculate about what makes the author so much a favorite of mine. Trollope led a jumbling life, traveling constantly during his career as a postal inspector in Ireland, and throughout the world thereafter. He started life as a poor boy suffering hazing at a rich boy's school, was defeated later in a run for Parliament, and ended up a loud, red-faced, hale fellow at clubs. But something developed in his character that gave him remarkable insight into both the upper and lower class mental sets of the English mind of that period. The result is that he can marvelously reproduce both the speech and the thought patterns of his men and women characters as they wrestle with problems they encounter in everyday ethical situations, both ordinary and extraordinary. Thus, we are presented with the dilemmas of a puzzled betrothed young woman, a "fallen" woman, a youth suspected of murder, an old man torn by grief, a man in the throes of unrequited love, and a fight between a country parson and a lord. Everything is explained and I found myself murmuring, "Of course. They would think that, say that, do that." Unlike Dickens, he doesn't deal in grotesques. Unlike Thackeray, he doesn't mock his creations. The novel is therefore a perfect example of the Realist school of fiction writing as well as a fine read. It doesn't cut as deeply as "The Way We Live Now," which could be a treatise on the "greed is good" generations of our recent past, nor does it have the spellbinding comedy-tragedy of the Barsetshire series, nor the political intricacies of the Palliser Series of his novels, but Trollope doesn't disappoint the attentive reader who will suspend "presentism" type judgments about the role of women or the church in the 19th century or the fact that defendants in a criminal trial could not testify. That was then. He still speaks to us now, and speaks quite clearly.

Means As a professor of literature, and as a "common reader," I revere Tolstoy above all other novelists I have read, but I would place Trollope just below him, in company with Dickens, Balzac, Austen, and Lawrence. It did not surprize me much to learn, while reading a biography of Tolstoy, that he had a great admiration for Trollope's work. Both these men share, in my opinion, an almost Olympian view of the human beings they have created. I sometimes think these men are writers for grown-ups because they do not deal in villains. We see their characters, as they do, as from a great height, so that Trollope's Crosbie, or Tolstoy's Vronsky demand from us almost as much compassion as those whom they injure. I guess I could sum up why I respect Trollope so: he is the master of ordinary life, and --like Tolstoy--he makes it extraordinary. The clerical hero of "The Vicar of Bullhampton" is one of the extraordinary, ordinary men. You will remember him.

Highly Disappointed By Shelly McCullough I bought this book because my husband and I are interested in writing e-books about our travel and housesitting adventures. We were hoping for some good tips on publishing, but all we got was the author rambling on about how it was 8am and he had written X number of words, now 9:30am and this many words. The point of the book was essentially to see how fast he could put words to a page. He mentions he only edits with Word and it’s noticeable since there were numerous errors. Not spelling errors, but grammatical errors (the wrong word being used but gets missed by spell-check). Oh, and the continuous use of the number ‘1’ instead of typing ‘one’…serious pet peeve. To try and pull some positives, the author did mention you need to focus, and you need to cut out some things that waste time – but these are things any writer should know (and probably already does).Overall, I was highly disappointed with the book, not worth the time to read unless you are keen on ramblings.

This will tell you another huge income source that the blogger might be ignoring. Just need to clear your mental block. Its not like your first book will be 100% successful but you will definitely get success if you try consistently and follow the steps given by Ryan. The book also covers the common mistakes which are made by newbies while publishing their ebooks. If you are a newbie author, then you should definitely check this out. Ryan also shared his journey in the book which makes the book bit personal. Overall, Nice Read! :)

His books are definitely a motivational force for anyone trying to increase their productivity and break into the digital nomad/eBook industry. His books are definitely not "get rich quick" type instructionals. If anything, he is a proponent of old-fashioned hard work and discipline. There are plenty of other resources (free and otherwise) that will teach you the nuts and bolts of eBook publishing. Ryan's strength is motivating you to consistently put words on the page. The more - and harder - you work, the better your results will be.

The room was handsomely furnished, but such as I would quarrel with none for calling common, for it certainly was uninteresting. Not a thing in it had to do with genuine individual choice, but merely with the fashion and custom of the class to which its occupiers belonged. It was a dining-room, of good size, appointed with all the things a dining-room "ought" to have, mostly new, and entirely expensive—mirrored sideboard in oak; heavy chairs, just the dozen, in fawn-coloured morocco seats and backs—the dining-room, in short, of a London-house inhabited by rich middle-class people. A big fire blazed in the low round-backed grate, whose flashes were reflected in the steel fender and the ugly fire-irons that were never used. A snowy cloth of linen, finer than ordinary, for there was pride in the housekeeping, covered the large dining-table, and a company, evidently a family, was eating its breakfast. But how come these people THERE?

I've read several of his books, and this is one of my favorites. It's all about letting God have his perfect way in everything--of course, MacDonald doesn't say that in so many words, but it's the lesson I came away with. It is a well-written, compelling story of two brothers and two sisters in the Scottish Highlands. I would advise finding a different publisher though, because my copy from Hardpress.net is full of typos. I actually whited some of them out and wrote in the correction, but in some places I couldn't even get the sense of the sentence because the words were so unclear. I do appreciate these publishers reprinting the old books, but it would be nice of Hardpress would proof-read first.

I've read it twice and will certainly read it a third time and probably a fourth. I fell in love with the main two characters--couldn't get enough of them! The plot was twisty enough to surprise, yet satisfying and logical in the end, and all the characters were totally real. As always, the love of God comes through like gangbusters. MacDonald has no equal, in my opinion, in understanding the love of God for His human (and animal and even vegetable) creation.

The free version I downloaded has no table of contents, and I'm assuming was OCR-ed by volunteers. Not thoroughly proofread, it's filled with such mistakes as "rne" for "me." (Many of the free public domain books are like that.) This story contains no Scottish dialect but only the mention that sometimes the characters are speaking Gaelic. In the first volume, we're introduced to two families. The first is a highland family named Macruadh consisting of the mother, elder brother Alister, and younger brother Ian. Alister is clan chief, but financial problems originating generations ago have depleted the tribe to about 150 people and caused the previous chiefs to sell most of the land to a party in London. The purchasing party tore down an old house on part of the land, built a new house, and then sold it to Peregrine Palmer, his wife, and six mostly young-adult children. These are the residents of "New House" and the second family in the story. The entire first volume is interactions between the Macruadh's and the Palmer's. Beyond that, there isn't any plot.A few interesting things happen in the second volume, but again, it's still about these two families, focusing primarily on Alister, Ian, and the two eldest Palmer girls. Of all the MacDonald adult novels I've read so far, this one fits best the pattern of the modern romance. Two people meet, experience instant attraction, and every event is contrived to either push them together or keep them apart; and in a Christian novel such as this one, there's the added dimension of the characters' relationships with God. Someone either gets saved or draws closer to God.In comparison to MacDonald's other novels, I didn't really like this story. Usually there figures in at least one character I love. Here, I'm not really rooting for any of them; and worse, the character who's supposed to be the "spiritual mentor" (MacDonald includes at least one in every story) I found annoying. MacDonald tries so hard to put Ian on a higher spiritual plane than anyone else that, to me, he comes across as condescending.Let me give an example. There's this one scene in volume two where Ian is reading Wordsworth to his brother and the two girls. The girls don't share Ian's enthusiasm for Wordsworth, and one of them jokes about some of the strange wording. Ian immediately stops reading and refuses to continue no matter how much they beg. At best, this is sulking. At worst, Ian is holding his own predilections above those of the girls. In fact, it's the second because the next day he deliberately reads the worst poetry of some lowbrow poet in the most sarcastic way possible, saying this might better suit the tastes of the young lady. Nice, Ian. Real nice. And rather than being offended, the girl actually bursts into tears and promises to never joke about Wordsworth again! And the reader is expected to side with Ian, judging a dislike for Wordsworth is a character defect! Now I well understand MacDonald's love for poetry, but I don't care how "spiritual" Ian is supposed to be. In my view, he holds himself and his personal tastes too superior to that of the girl's to illicit my sympathy. In the third volume, the plot finally develops into an issue that affects the entire clan. While I recognize the heartlessness of Palmer's resulting actions, I was unable to wholeheartedly take Macruadh's side. Again, I know how MacDonald feels about the issue of drinking from his other stories, but I didn't think he did as good a job of buttressing Alister's convictions in this story as he did with other protagonists in other stories. In "What's Mine's Mine," the reader is expected to take Macruadh's side simply because (in the author's view) he's in the right. But I saw it as a matter that might have been resolved by compromise and the Biblical practice of placing the other person's interests ahead of your own. I think if it had been simply a matter of highlander and lowlander differences, I might have given the book a higher rating. But MacDonald clearly sides with the highlanders and their chief as being superior, and the lowlanders must be "brought up to their level" to be anywhere near their equals; and to support this, he widens the gap and turns Palmer into a villain and Alister into a hero.If you haven't yet read any adult MacDonald novel, I wouldn't recommend starting with this one. Two good ones with lovable characters and an intricate plot are "Sir Gibbie," which contains Scottish dialect, and "There and Back," which does not. If you're already a MacDonald fan and just want to give this one a try, you may come away with a more positive review of it than I did.
