During the first two months of the year 1844, the greatest possible excitement existed in Dublin respecting the State Trials, in which Mr O'Connell, his son, the Editors of three different repeal newspapers, Tom Steele, the Rev. Mr Tierney—a priest who had taken a somewhat prominent part in the Repeal Movement—and Mr Ray, the Secretary to the Repeal Association, were indicted for conspiracy. Those who only read of the proceedings in papers, which gave them as a mere portion of the news of the day, or learned what was going on in Dublin by chance conversation, can have no idea of the absorbing interest which the whole affair created in Ireland, but more especially in the metropolis. Every one felt strongly, on one side or on the other. Every one had brought the matter home to his own bosom, and looked to the result of the trial with individual interest and suspense.

The Kellys and the O'Kellys, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

It was his second book, and it shows that he knew how to write a social comedy from the beginning. The characters are beautifully drawn, and the dilemmas are, of course, utterly mundane and utterly dramatic. A piece of property goes to a plain but decent woman, which raises her value in the marriage market. Her brother resents her. Will he become violent, or is he just a hapless drunk? Another man, who has a large property, puts it in jeopardy by owning race horses--but his trainer is the wisest man he knows (which doesn't mean his horses always win). This is a jewel, written in Trollope's characteristic smooth but pointed style. No one in England was interested in the Irish when it came out (1848), and it sold about fifty copies. It has always been outshone by his later works. I believe he was thirty-two when he wrote it. But it is wise, entertaining and full of those sort of moral riddles we love Trollope for exploring.

Schneider Written and published in 1848, when Trollope worked for the Postal Service in Ireland, set during the time of the Irish State Trials of 1844,when Irish politicians wanted to repeal the annexation of Ireland by Great Britain and were accused of treason. The story involves 2 Irish families with a structurally similar situation: the young man in each wants to marry a richer woman. The details are different though.Young farmer Martin Kelly intends to marry an older woman with some money, but there are difficulties about that money. She needs to fend off her brother's attacks on her prosperity. She is Anty Lynch and as positive a character as you can find in this novel. Her brother Barry is as dark a villain as you can find in any Trollope. (Anty's goodness and simplicity is rather trying for the cynical reader. Ie me.)The O'Kellys belong to the Irish peerage. They own land without great value. The current standing of the family is mediocre. A dishonest administrator has done much damage to the property. The family has been stuck in legal action about lease disputes. Now the young viscount has to live on a fairly meager income. He is engaged to a young lady with her own means, but the young man's life style choices endanger the engagement. He is too much involved with horses and races and gambling, which his income can't sustain.Young Kelly's betrothed Anty happens to be the daughter of the man Lynch who cheated the O'Kellys, so her money is stolen from them.Enough of the plot. AT's commercial successes would come later. This is a bit of a practice session. He does look down upon the Irish, but his condescension is bearable to me, a non Irish. He is the type of the good colonialist. (In case that you question my observation about AT's condescending attitude: just look at how he describes life in widow Kelly's inn or in lawyer Daly's law practice. Poking good natured fun at the natives, poor children.)Looking for weaknesses in the novel, it occurs to me that neither of the two good young men, Martin Kelly and Frank O'Kelly, is really convincing. They are both contradictory characters, which is normal, but Trollope spends far too much effort in explaining them.I could also have done with less space given to the horses. After all, they like me as little as I like them...

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Which is the principal motivation: love or money? By R. M. Peterson Ireland in 1844, just before the Great Famine. The Kellys are a middle-class family living in County Mayo. Mary Kelly is a widow, who runs a country inn; Martin Kelly is her hard-working son, a tenant farmer. Francis John Mountmorris O'Kelly is Martin's landlord. He also is Lord Ballandine, a peer whose family's holdings have shrunk to what is at best modest. THE KELLYS AND THE O'KELLYS is the story of Martin Kelly's and Lord Ballandine's separate courtships of women who have more than enough money to make their suitor's life considerably more comfortable. Both Martin and Ballandine must wrestle with whether he is pursuing trothplight more out of love or more for the money. Another parallel: a repugnant male is determined to prevent each match. In Ballandine's case, the obstacle is his sweetheart's guardian, who wants instead to marry her to his spendthrift son so her fortune can be used to pay off his debts, while with Martin the impediment is his intended's brother (as vile a character as there is in Victorian fiction), who so desires her property for himself that he tries to have her murdered before she can be married. The novel provides a good picture of rural Irish society, mid-nineteenth century. While it opens with the trial of Daniel O'Connell and other "repealers" for conspiracy, political unrest never drives the action but instead furnishes part of the backdrop. There is plenty involving the law and lawyers, including a mordant scene of a lawyer "shaping" the testimony of his prospective witnesses. Religion and clergy also are present, including occasional friction between the Catholics and the Protestants; the hero of the novel turns out to be an unprepossessing parson with a congregation that can be counted on the fingers of two hands (when he wants to make a good impression on a visiting Anglican notable, he asks some Catholic friends in the neighborhood to come and help fill the pews, which they do). There is a foxhunt scene, something that came to be a trademark of Trollope's, as well as some behind-the-scenes machinations relating to the training and running of thoroughbreds. But most prominent is the impulse to marry for financial gain or security and the scheming and rationalizations associated with it.THE KELLYS AND O'KELLYS was Trollope's second novel. It was the first in which he intertwined the telling of two tales. By and large he handles it ably. Although the novel is slightly repetitive at times and Trollope a little windy, the prose simply flows, already in full Trollopean spate. There are some memorable characters, although there is little in the way of character development and what there is can be clumsy. There is comedy and there is moderately biting social satire. At the end of the novel, Trollope wraps up his two tales and various loose ends (though not all of them) in awkwardly hasty fashion, as if he suddenly had tired of writing the novel. There is much to like and enjoy in THE KELLYS AND O'KELLYS, but the execution is a little ragged, it is rather on the light side, and I doubt that it is among Trollope's finest.

From the lead singer of the band Great Big Sea comes a lyrical and captivating musical memoir about growing up in the tiny fishing village of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, and then taking to the world stage.     Singer-songwriter and front man of the great Canadian band Great Big Sea, Alan Doyle is also a lyrical storyteller and a creative force. In Where I Belong, Alan paints a vivid, raucous and heartwarming portrait of a curious young lad born into the small coastal fishing community of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, and destined to become a renowned musician who carried the musical tradition of generations before him and brought his signature sound to the world. He tells of a childhood surrounded by larger-than-life characters who made an indelible impression on his music and work; of his first job on the wharf cutting out cod tongues for fishermen; of growing up in a family of five in a two-bedroom house with a beef-bucket as a toilet, yet lacking nothing; of learning at his father's knee how to sing the story of a song and learning from his mother how to simply "be good"; and finally, of how everything he ever learned as a kid prepared him for that pivotal moment when he became part of Great Big Sea and sailed away on what would be the greatest musical adventure of his life.      Filled with the lore and traditions of the East Coast and told in a voice that is at once captivating and refreshingly candid, this is a narrative journey about small-town life, curiosity and creative fulfillment, and finally, about leaving everything you know behind only to learn that no matter where you go, home will always be with you.

Review

"Funny, tender and practically glowing with rose-coloured nostalgia, Doyle's childhood tale comes across as a textbook example of doing-the-best-with-what-you-have and the amiable, resourceful nature of Newfoundland's inshore fishing communities . . . a community that seemed to be the last vestige of another world." --Calgary Herald

Loved by many as part of the band Great Big Sea, a respected solo artist, actor ... there seems to be no creative endeavor he can't excel at. In 'Where I Belong', Doyle turns his natural born gift of the gab to his beloved tropical isle of Newfoundland, and specifically the tiny town of Petty Harbour. His stories of growing up in a special corner of Canada and how it has shaped him as an artist and a man are a delight to read. Can't wait for the next volume.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I've been a fan of Great Big Sea over the years and have seen them ... By Teena in Toronto I've been a fan of Great Big Sea over the years and have seen them many times in concerts.Alan Doyle was one of the members in Great Big Sea. He seems like a nice guy and I was interested in reading his story. I figured it would be a good one and it was.Doyle tells of growing up in a small fishing village just outside of St. John's, NF. His family (dad, mom and four kids) didn't have much but they didn't realize that because they had what everyone else had (or didn't have what others didn't have) ... they didn't even have a bathroom for many years. Most of Petty Harbour is related to them somehow ... kinda cramps your style when you're looking for a girlfriend because most of the girls are either your cousin or Protestant. We hear what it's like working on the wharfs when the fisherman would come in and his job was to cut the tongues from the codfish and try to sell them for pocket money. Things improved when he got a job when he was 16 in St. John's in a museum as an interpreter. Plus he started picking up gigs in bands, which eventually led to him meeting Séan McCann and forming Great Big Sea.I liked the writing style ... I thought it was honest and humorous. I bet Doyle would be a fun guy to sit and have a beer with. The dialogue is great because it's written phonetically and I could hear Newfie accents when I read it. At times, there is a bit of swearing. Throughout the book there are pictures of when he was younger ... with his oversized glasses and peach fuzz moustache, he was stylin' (NOT!). Ha! His mom's bread sounds and looks amazing ... I haven't seen "double" bread since I left Nova Scotia. This was a fun yet interesting book about an east coast Canadian who started with not a lot financially and has done well for himself. I'd recommend this book.Blog review post: http://www.teenaintoronto.com/2014/10/book-where-i-belong-2014-alan-doyle.html

"Another month's work will knock Morton into 'pi,'" was a remark that caught my ear as I fumed from the composing-room back to my private office. I had just irately blamed a printer for a blunder of my own, and the words I overheard reminded me of the unpleasant truth that I had recently made a great many senseless blunders, over which I chafed in merciless self-condemnation. For weeks and months my mind had been tense under the strain of increasing work and responsibility. It was my nature to become absorbed in my tasks, and, as night editor of a prominent city journal, I found a limitless field for labor.

I read this to the end because it's was good enough to make me want to know what happened By Maggie Jarpey I read this to the end because it's was good enough to make me want to know what happened, but it really wasn't all that good, especially not compared with some of his other books that I thought were wonderful. The witty repartee between the two main characters was not as good in the year 2013 as it was in the 1800s. The portrait of a lovable Quaker family was very nice, and I liked it, but there just wasn't enough good stuff here to make me want to read the book again--and I always want to read again any book that I really like. The Christian element, despite the lovely Quaker family, wasn't essential to the story the way it was in Roe's other books that I liked so much. Part of the problem for me was that it was told in the first person, and that often does not appeal to me, for some unknown reason. However, the story of the lightning strike was fascinating and riveting. I'll not soon forget that. Perhaps I should add another star just for that!

Simple and easy to understand, many of the stories teach lessons about morals, instead of mindless blather. I am enjoying reading through the series again.

This book tells me where the animals got their names and things. My son wrote the above review. The series of books written by Thornton W. (Thornton Waldo) Burgess are his favorite books at this time. I purchased a Kindle for him so that he could read when he went to bed. The reason that I choose the Kindle Paperwhite is because it has a light so that he can read at night and it has a touch screen so that it is easy for him to access the dictionary feature. He goes to bed around 8:30 PM and is permitted to read for about 1 hour. He reads about 20,000 words in that time, so he finishes one of these books in about 2 nights. He uses the dictionary - the other morning he explained the meaning of "gullible" for me. I presume that he encountered the word the previous night and utilized the dictionary feature to learn the meaning.Although I have not read the books myself, based on my son's comments to me about the stories, the series by Thornton Burgess are entertaining and contain good moral lessons for young children.

So very wholesome and non-confrontaitonal. Get the whole seriees. There are many.

Do NOT spend money on this By KatieL I'm not sure where the positive reviews for this book came from, but I'm SO glad that I didn't spend any money on it (I got it free from KindleUnlimited). The book is so basic and short, it's more of an article than a book (and you can find out more from most online articles on real estate investing than in this "book"). I only read it because it was so short that I finished the whole book in about two hours. The author compares buying a property to buying groceries for a meal, stating that if you buy things you don't need you'll spend too much money and if you add ingredients you didn't mean to, you'll ruin the flavor. (Seriously?) The author refers to the Capital Asset Pricing Model as one method for determining the value of a property, without any explanation of how to use it. I know how to use CAPM for stock valuations, but the book simply provides a textbook definition of the CAPM without explaining how one might use it for valuing real estate. The section made me doubt whether the author knows how to use the CAPM, since he didn't offer ANY insight. Based on other reviews, I purchased: Professional Real Estate Development: The ULI Guide to the Business. I highly recommend that book instead.

Mansfield and his younger brother Walter Edwin Mansfield, also a journalist. This book of short stories features the adventures of wealthy widow Aidë Lerestelle as she is commissioned by members of the French diplomatic service to solve mysteries or fix problematic situations that they themselves cannot resolve. These include a commission to buy an almost science-fiction style submarine from an eccentric inventor; to identify the thief of a mysteriously stolen document in an early equivalent of a locked-door mystery; and otherwise to protect France's interests.Madame Lesterelle is a remarkable heroine for her day, reminiscent of Arthur Conan Doyle's Irene Adler in the way that she uses her wits far more often than her beauty and in her independence. While she is deeply attached to her two primary contacts and is even at least partially in love with one of them, this is not the primary focus of the stories, and she regularly shows herself to be a woman with great integrity and deeply loyal to her country and her friends. While some of the plot twists are evident early on and obviously the book is dated, the stories are lively and the characters are engaging.

A swift, gray November wind had taken every chimney of the house for an organ-pipe, and was roaring in them all at once, quelling the more distant and varied noises of the woods, which moaned and surged like a sea. Helen Lingard had not been out all day. The morning, indeed, had been fine, but she had been writing a long letter to her brother Leopold at Cambridge, and had put off her walk in the neighbouring park till after luncheon, and in the meantime the wind had risen, and brought with it a haze that threatened rain.

By A Customer This novel emphasizes the struggles within the heart of a young pastor as he confronts his faith in God and examines whether what he professes to believe is acually true. His dilema begins when one of his congregation (an outwardly deformed but inwardly pious dwarf) notices that the sermons he is delivering are not of his own making. We watch Thomas Wingfold as he struggles to confront the Truth and then apply it to his life as he seeks to help a rich young girl deal with a grief that is threatening to open her up to a deeper part of life that she ever knew existed.

By MacDonald Fan I noticed there were a bewildering number of editions of this book, and spent a lot of time looking through to find what I wanted: in particular, the "3 (original) volumes" all in one book, that is, the whole story in one book.I like the size (not too thick) and paper quality. I also like the typeset of this book: it is not big, but comfortable for me, with nice margins and space between the paragraphs to make most reading fairly easy (though a few long paragraphs in this font might tire some people). I feel quite disappointed in the spell-checking though. I don't remember reading a book with so many typos! It may have been only 1 every 5 pages or so, but I'm not a careful reader and for me to notice them means there are quite a few - a disappointing feature of an otherwise very acceptable edition.

The spiritual journey that he embarks on, and continues throughout the book, is one that includes questions all Christians will have to eventually ask themselves. Some of the sermons and questions in the book hit home, and really made me ask questions of myself. If you like MacDonald, this is a book with a clear spiritual message that will really impact you. I highly recommend it.

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

51 of 51 people found the following review helpful. only partially the real thing! By Sagelady This is undoubtedly a beautiful book, but it should definitely be noted that it only contains the first half of Mowgli's story (i.e., through Shere Khan chapter only) - the text seems unabridged that far, but parts of both Jungle Books are missing - which I for one was misled about from other review(s).

Because of the widespread awareness of the story of the evil Transylvanian count and the success of numerous film adaptations that have been created over the years, the modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure―a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters―with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

This production of Dracula is presented by what is possibly the best assemblage of narrating talent ever for one audiobook: Emmy Award nominees Alan Cumming and Tim Curry plus an all-star cast of Audie award-winners Simon Vance (The Millenium Trilogy), Katherine Kellgren (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Susan Duerden (The Tiger’s Wife), John Lee (Supergods) and customer favorites Graeme Malcolm (Skippy Dies), Steven Crossley (The Oxford Time Travel series), Simon Prebble (The Baroque Cycle), James Adams (Letters to a Young Contrarian), Nicola Barber (The Rose Garden), Victor Villar-Hauser (Fun Inc.), and Marc Vietor (1Q84). These stellar narrators have been cast as follows:

Alan Cumming as Dr. SewardSimon Vance as Jonathan HarkerKaty Kellgren as Mina Murray/HarkerSusan Duerden as Lucy WestenraTim Curry as Van HelsingGraeme Malcolm as Dailygraph correspondentSteven Crossley as Zookeeper’s account and reporterSimon Prebble as VarnaJames Adams as Patrick HennesseyNicola Barber as Sister AgathaVictor Villar-Hauser as Arthur HolmwoodMarc Vietor as Quincey MorrisJohn Lee as Introductory paragraph, various letters

Dracula [Audible Edition], by Bram Stoker

Amazon.com Review Dracula is one of the few horror books to be honored by inclusion in the Norton Critical Edition series. (The others are Frankenstein, The Turn of the Screw, Heart of Darkness, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Metamorphosis.) This 100th-anniversary edition includes not only the complete authoritative text of the novel with illuminating footnotes, but also four contextual essays, five reviews from the time of publication, five articles on dramatic and film variations, and seven selections from literary and academic criticism. Nina Auerbach of the University of Pennsylvania (author of Our Vampires, Ourselves) and horror scholar David J. Skal (author of Hollywood Gothic, The Monster Show, and Screams of Reason) are the editors of the volume. Especially fascinating are excerpts from materials that Bram Stoker consulted in his research for the book, and his working papers over the several years he was composing it. The selection of criticism includes essays on how Dracula deals with female sexuality, gender inversion, homoerotic elements, and Victorian fears of "reverse colonization" by politically turbulent Transylvania.

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up?A naive young Englishman travels to Transylvania to do business with a client, Count Dracula. After showing his true and terrifying colors, Dracula boards a ship for England in search of new, fresh blood. Unexplained disasters begin to occur in the streets of London before the mystery and the evil doer are finally put to rest. Told in a series of news reports from eyewitness observers to writers of personal diaries, this has a ring of believability that counterbalances nicely with Dracula's too-macabre-to-be-true exploits. An array of voices from talented actors makes for interesting variety. The generous use of sound effects, from train whistles to creaking doors, adds further atmosphere. Lovers of mysteries and horror will find rousing entertainment in this version of a classic tale.?Carol Katz, Harrison Public Library, NYCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The Dover volume collects 14 of Stoker's lesser-known horror stories such as "The Crystal Cup," "The Burial of the Rats," and "A Gipsey Prophecy." Though most of his other fiction has been overshadowed by Dracula, these offer some real chills and warrant reading. While editions of Dracula, which celebrated its centennial in 1997, are legion, Broadview's offers several extras, including a chronology of Stoker's life and appendixes on Transylvania, London, Mental Physiology, Reviews and Interviews, and more. That along with the full text make this one of the best editions available, especially at this remarkable price.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

232 of 247 people found the following review helpful. Easily the best horror novel ever written By Daniel Jolley Bram Stoker's Dracula is, hands down, the greatest horror novel ever written. In addition, it is also an enduring classic of literature. You may have seen every Dracula movie ever made, but you do not know the real Count Dracula until such time as you have read Stoker's book. Of course, unless you have been living under a rock, you will know the general plot line, but I assure you there is a wealth of rich material buried throughout the text that is sure to excite, intrigue, and surprise you. Perhaps the ending is a slight anticlimactic, yet I, having read this novel before and being quite familiar with the Count, read the final pages with bated breath, an anxious mind, and the sense of exhilaration that only the most talented of writers can induce. The most striking characteristic of Stoker's masterpiece is its solid grounding in late 19th-century Victorianism. This may prove frustrating to some readers. It is far from uncommon for the men in the tale to weep and bemoan the dangers threatening the virtuous ladies Lucy and Mina; virtue and innocence of women are hailed rather religiously. Mina, for her part, assumes the role then deemed proper for women, accepting and praising the men for their protection of her, worrying constantly about her husband rather than herself, shedding tears she must not let her husband see, etc. Yet, it is most interesting to see Mina rise above the circle of a woman's proscribed duties; she in fact becomes a true partner in the effort against Dracula, expressing ideas and conclusions that the men, with all of their wisdom, could not come up with themselves.Another thing I find interesting is the lack of a clear protagonist in Dracula. Technically, I suppose, Jonathon Harker is the protagonist, but Mina, Dr. Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, and the Count himself basically operate on an equal plane with him. It is Van Helsing who can be described as the anti-Dracula; he plans the moves by which he and his friends seek to thwart the Count's plans and destroy him; the second half of the novel can be compared to a chess match between two equally strong competitors. Minor characters such as the lunatic Renfield are also drawn clearly in our mind's eye by Stoker's incredible gift of characterization. While the format is unusual--the novel consisting fully of diary and journal entries by different characters--you cannot help but be drawn in closely to the group of heroic souls who pledge their very lives to one another as they take it upon themselves to combat a centuries-old evil. One could expound upon a number of themes in this novel (and many literary critics have certainly done so), so I will just quickly mention a few. Is this an erotic story? Certainly, to some extent, but there is certainly nothing overtly sexual in these pages. Is it really horrible? One might wonder how much blood one would encounter in this product of the Victorian age, but there are indeed some rather shockingly gruesome descriptions of events--nothing to shock modern readers but probably quite surprising to Stoker's contemporaries. There are also subtle overtones of religion in these pages. Aside from the Christian objects that have the power to keep vampires at bay, the most striking scene in the novel is Dracula's perversion of the Lord's Supper in his own most nefarious deed.I cannot recommend Stoker's masterpiece highly enough. The impatient reader may encounter sections that move too slowly than he/she would like, but such lulls are always wiped away by sudden spurts of activity and drama. Feminists will dislike the Victorian characterization of the women but can find unexpected pleasure in the strength and intellect of Mina. Literary critics will surely find in these pages a deep ocean of issues ripe for analysis. Of most importance, the common reader will find an absorbing storyline which may horrify him/her to some degree in places but which will certainly offer great rewards of enjoyment. I think most individuals would be won over completely by the great humanity of these characters and the unexpected richness and complexity to be found in this story of a fiend they thought they already knew.

Mcgeehan I have never read the novel "Dracula" but with it being absolutely free for my absolutely wonderful Kindle, I decided to give it a shot. The book is written entirely in correspondence from the characters; letters to each other, diary entries, telegrams, etc. While I did have to use my built-in Kindle dictionary many times with the big (or antiquated) words, the book flowed freely and was a surprisingly easy read. Certain scenes were downright chilling. What's truly amazing is Stoker's creation of such an incredible monster that has stood the test of time.

44 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Misunderstood Classic By A Customer One of the scariest books in history, DRACULA is nevertheless misunderstood. Our civilization is removed from the Victorian era. We think of it as somehow distant and quaint, and ourselves as modern. But when Bram Stoker published DRACULA in 1897, the Victorian era _was_ modern. Stoker meant to make the book more frightening than most books by bringing an ancient horror into a modern, anti-superstitious world. He uses typewriters and phonograph disks the way a modern writer would refer to the internet and e-mail. DRACULA's first readers might've looked out of their town or country houses and expected to see Dracula's gaunt figure emerging through the fog.He tells the story through a series of diaries, letters, clippings. Normally this is an unweildy method of storytelling, but in this case it is most effective. The novel is divided into three broad sections. In the first, young Jonathan Harker and Dracula have the stage almost alone. Though Harker's diary we learn details of his journey through eastern Europe to meet a Count who wants to travel to England, and Harker carries him certain important papers. Count Dracula's character comes across very strong and well-defined, and grows ever menacing as Harker slowly learns he is not going to be allowed back to England, but will become food for Dracula's vampiric harem. The second part of the book, set in England, deals with Mina Murray, who is going to marry Jonathan; Mina's friend Lucy; three men who are in love with Lucy; and a good-hearted but mysterious Ductch doctor, Abraham van Helsing. The bulk of this part deals with Lucy's mysterious disease, her decline to death, and her transformation into a vampire that her suitors must destroy out of love. Dracula appears only fleetingly through the book, but the reader knows what happens, and suspects the cause of Lucy's decline. In the last part, Jonathan, Mina, and Lucy's three lovers band with Dr. von Helsing in a pact to destroy Dracula before he can spread his contagion throughout England; and meanwhile, Dracula wreaks his vengeance on them for taking Lucy from him.Stoker uses many ways of approaching his subject. Occasionally the horror is direct; but once it is established, he makes it subtle, working behind the scenes, in a way that may be even more frightening. Though he also uses different voices, his prose is invariably fine. And as each character has to overcome his aversion to ancient superstition and face Dracula with a mind open to the fact that there's more in the world than science and technology and late-Victorian materialism can contain, the book becomes eerily meaningful for the twenty-first century.Modern purveyors of vampiric fiction dispense with the blatant Christian symbolism used to fight Dracula's ilk, such as a crucifix or sanctified host, or prayer. They also turn the evil of Dracula topsy-turvey and somehow invent sympathy for soulless monsters who view living humans as food. Stoker doesn't hesitate to show Dracula as an evil, totalitarian horror; as a contagion that must be eradicated; as an enslaver of women, like Lucy, and men, like poor Renfield. And Stoker has reason enough to realized that only Supernatural agencies could fight the supernatural. The saving Blood of Christ on the Cross, blood of which a soulless terror like Dracula cannot drink, is the most effective symbol for fighting and defeating this brand of evil. It was part of the novel's consistency that as the characters have to come to grips with the reality of ancient evil, they must also return to the symbols of good that they also have rejected in a narrow-minded embracing of the modern.Dracula, the strongest character in Victorian fiction, does not weaken himself by the need to be "understood" or "pitied". He will destroy or be destroyed. And the worst destruction that could happen to him would be mitigation.DRACULA may be the scariest book ever written; it's certainly the best of the classic horror stories. It's well-crafted and exquisitely constructed enough that it stands as a great novel even without genre pigeonholing.

Gregory of Tours was a Gallo-Roman aristocrat and Catholic prelate born in 538. He died 56 years later, in 591, a period in which the brutal Merovingian rulers of the Frankish nation consolidated their power over most of Gaul. Gregory experienced the transition from the dying world of Roman antiquity to the new culture of early medieval Europe. He lived on the border between the Frankish culture of the Merovingians to the north and the Gallo-Roman culture of the south of Gaul. He struggled through personal relations with four Frankish kings: Sigebert I, Chilperic I, Guntram, and Childebert II, and he personally knew most of the leading Franks of his day.

The book opens with a recounting of the world's history from the creation but moves quickly to the Christianization of Gaul, the life and times of Saint Martin of Tours, the conversion of the Franks, the conquest of Gaul under Clovis, and the more detailed history of the Frankish kings, down to the death of Sigebert I in 575. The second part, books V and VI, closes with Chilperic I's death in 584. The third part, comprising books VII to X, is an increasingly personal account down to the year 591.

As bishop of Tours, Gregory could not have been better placed to hear everything and meet everyone of influence in Merovingian culture.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Actually an exciting book By E. Solomonson Normally when I read original historical texts I do so to try to get a feel for how people lived back then and besides from the Norse Sagas most writing that claims to be a true account of what happened is interesting, but suitable to read with some Chamomile tea before bed (Hello Bede!) But this book....Wow. Violence, violence, violence all in the name of power. It is like Game of Thrones but that it is very likely that the power plays happened. What I see in this book is the power players using the Bible as an excuse to kill each other, something often mentioned as happening but really until the Crusades and then the Thirty Years War I don't think it was really as common as our more secular society claims it is..But not in sixth and seventh Century France and Germany. We have Childebert (everyone is named 'bert 1400 years before the comic Dilbert did it) thinking the Bible condemns Merovech, his son, from marrying his Uncle's widow Brunhilda so they set about trying to kill each other. There are poisonings, there are slaves being buried alive by (obviously) cruel kings. There are mentions of Pope Gregory and they really focus on St. Martin for some reason. My problems with the book are these: Its annotated. I want to read about the Franks fighting Huns but they don't let me. The typos in the Kindle formatting are terrible and abundant. But the Kindle price is right for this book and it is exciting to read. If you wanted students to start out with Medieval History that would inspire their interest, I would choose this book, annotated or not.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a source document, but missing sections By Damon Edmondson This is an interesting source document for the dark ages. The most significant negative for this translation is that approximately 1/3 of the document is missing, with only summary text indicating what the missing chapter covered.Oh, and the last 1/3 of the book is Gregory...being pretty darn snippy about his contemporaries.

By Suzanne I bought this for a history class, only to find out that it's missing a lot of material, it basically lists all the chapters it leaves out. Find another edition if you need the whole book. Oh well, at least I only wasted a dollar...
