At the age of six Randall Byrne could name and bound every state in the Union and give the date of its admission; at nine he was conversant with Homeric Greek and Caesar; at twelve he read Aristophanes with perfect understanding of the allusions of the day and divided his leisure between Ovid and Horace; at fifteen, wearied by the simplicity of Old English and Thirteenth Century Italian, he dipped into the history of Philosophy and passed from that, naturally, into calculus and the higher mathematics; at eighteen he took an A.B. from Harvard and while idling away a pleasant summer with Hebrew and Sanscrit he delved lightly into biology and its kindred sciences, having reached the conclusion that Truth is greater than Goodness or Beauty, because it comprises both, and the whole is greater than any of its parts; at twenty-one he pocketed his Ph.D. and was touched with the fever of his first practical enthusiasm—surgery.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A real Western! By James Hobbs Frederick Schiller Faust wrote under 19 different pen names, the most popular being Max Brand. He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed. This is one of his best novels, violet, yet powerful, funny, about East meets West, and the West winning! All with an ending that only Max could write. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.

The following Sketches owe their existence chiefly to frequent peregrinations in Chinese cities, with pencil and note-book in hand. Some of them were written for my friend Mr. F. H. Balfour of Shanghai, and by him published in the columns of the Celestial Empire. These have been revised and partly re-written; others appear now for the first time.

Giles appears most irritated by what he takes as the reluctance of Chinese people to profit from empirical evidence over tradition. The chapter on the instructions to the Chinese Coroner is priceless.

The stranger came early in February, one wintry day, through a biting wind and a driving snow, the last snowfall of the year, over the down, walking from Bramblehurst railway station, and carrying a little black portmanteau in his thickly gloved hand. He was wrapped up from head to foot, and the brim of his soft felt hat hid every inch of his face but the shiny tip of his nose; the snow had piled itself against his shoulders and chest, and added a white crest to the burden he carried. He staggered into the "Coach and Horses" more dead than alive. A science fiction masterpiece!

The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance, by H. G. Wells

Amazon.com Review We rely, in this world, on the visual aspects of humanity as a means of learning who we are. This, Ralph Ellison argues convincingly, is a dangerous habit. A classic from the moment it first appeared in 1952, Invisible Man chronicles the travels of its narrator, a young, nameless black man, as he moves through the hellish levels of American intolerance and cultural blindness. Searching for a context in which to know himself, he exists in a very peculiar state. "I am an invisible man," he says in his prologue. "When they approach me they see only my surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination--indeed, everything and anything except me." But this is hard-won self-knowledge, earned over the course of many years.

As the book gets started, the narrator is expelled from his Southern Negro college for inadvertently showing a white trustee the reality of black life in the south, including an incestuous farmer and a rural whorehouse. The college director chastises him: "Why, the dumbest black bastard in the cotton patch knows that the only way to please a white man is to tell him a lie! What kind of an education are you getting around here?" Mystified, the narrator moves north to New York City, where the truth, at least as he perceives it, is dealt another blow when he learns that his former headmaster's recommendation letters are, in fact, letters of condemnation.

What ensues is a search for what truth actually is, which proves to be supremely elusive. The narrator becomes a spokesman for a mixed-race band of social activists called "The Brotherhood" and believes he is fighting for equality. Once again, he realizes he's been duped into believing what he thought was the truth, when in fact it is only another variation. Of the Brothers, he eventually discerns: "They were blind, bat blind, moving only by the echoed sounds of their voices. And because they were blind they would destroy themselves.... Here I thought they accepted me because they felt that color made no difference, when in reality it made no difference because they didn't see either color or men."

Invisible Man is certainly a book about race in America, and sadly enough, few of the problems it chronicles have disappeared even now. But Ellison's first novel transcends such a narrow definition. It's also a book about the human race stumbling down the path to identity, challenged and successful to varying degrees. None of us can ever be sure of the truth beyond ourselves, and possibly not even there. The world is a tricky place, and no one knows this better than the invisible man, who leaves us with these chilling, provocative words: "And it is this which frightens me: Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?" --Melanie Rehak

From Publishers Weekly These three volumes have been redesigned and reissued to commemorate the first anniversary of Ellison's death. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Two of Wells's masterpieces get the red-carpet treatment here in these luxurious editions. Along with annotated texts, they feature scholarly introductions and appendixes, bibliographies, illustrations, and indexes. Though they are perhaps a tad pricey for most public libraries, academic collections supporting English departments should definitely invest in these volumes.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

102 of 114 people found the following review helpful. Extremely Influential, Extremely Memorable By Gary F. Taylor On the surface, THE INVISIBLE MAN concerns a scientist named Griffin who has discovered the means to invisibility--but who has gone mad in the process. When frustrated in his efforts to restore himself to visibility, he determines to embark upon a reign of terror that will make him master of the world. It is worth noting, however, that Wells was very much a social writer and that his novels are inevitably commentaries on various social evils. Once you scratch the surface of THE INVISIBLE MAN you will find that it is very much a parable of class structure that dominated British life during the Victorian age: there are many "invisible men;" this particular one, however, is in a very literal situation. And it is the literal situation from which the novel draws most of its power. Invisibility sounds attractive--but what if you were to actually become so? How would you cope with the ordinary details of every day life? Griffin does not cope well at all, and although Wells suggests that his madness have arisen from a number of sources, he also implies that it may arise from the fact of invisibility itself, again twisting the context back into the social criticism on which the novel seems based.First published in 1897, THE INVISIBLE MAN is one of Wells earliest novels, and for all its charms it creaks a bit in terms of plot and structure. Some may disagree, but to my mind the most effective portion of the novel are the chapters in which Griffin relates his adventures to fellow scientist Kemp--but regardless of its flaws remains extremely influential and it has tremendous dash and style throughout. Short enough to be read in a single sitting, it is a quick and entertaining read and it is also quite witty in an underhanded, subversive sort of way. Extremely memorable!GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Still interesting By TS First, this edition: it's reasonably well-formatted for a free ebook, with few typos, although the table of contents is not clickable; it clocks in at 1,841 "locations."As to the story itself:This is H.G. Wells' foundational science-fiction tale of a mad scientist who discovers a way to turn himself invisible. It's a masterfully told story that's been entertaining readers for roughly a hundred years, and I'd lay good odds you'll find it well worth the read. What many readers might miss, though (I certainly did, my first time through) is that this isn't just a sci-fi potboiler; it's a modernization of the Platonic story of the Ring of Gyges. Beyond being a master storyteller, Wells was also an ardent philosopher and socialist, and like all of his other tales, there's a major political point here -- that morality derives from society -- and some additional minor political themes, like the plight of the urban poor.Wells' genius here was to take the Platonic story of a Ring of Invisibility that inevitably led its wearer to commit injustice, and revitalize it in a modern context and in a way that made a sophisticated philosophical point.Where Plato's Glaucon states:--------"For all men believe in their hearts that injustice is far more profitable to the individual than justice, and he who argues as I have been supposing, will say that they are right. If you could imagine any one obtaining this power of becoming invisible, and never doing any wrong or touching what was another's, he would be thought by the lookers-on to be a most wretched idiot, although they would praise him to one another's faces, and keep up appearances with one another from a fear that they too might suffer injustice."--------Wells extrapolates to the present, not only making the story amenable to modern readers by substituting a scientific process for a magic ring, but also by building on Plato's point: not only does Wells' protagonist commit selfish injustice after selfish injustice, but his self-severance from society drives him into a murderous megalomania, and his end is quite the inverse of Plato's Gyges (who ended up king of Lydia and, supposedly, an ancestor of Croesus).

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. vivid, suspenseful, and good sci-fi By Robert J. Crawford This is a absolutely wonderful book that can be read quickly, maybe even in one sitting. It is told in the first person by an observer who knows the invisible man and is appalled by the transformation that is taking place as both drugs and power corrupt his acquaintence's mind. What is so fun about this book is the pace: you really feel like you are there. It is all realistically imagined, down to the slowness of the undigested food that can still be seen in the invisible's man stomach. This makes the book far better sci-fi than the films, with the possible exception of the one with Claude Rains, which is the best one and the closest to the original novel by far.In addition to Mary SHelley and Jules Verne, Wells helped to set the standard for all hard sci-fi that followed. Thus, if you like sci-fi as literature, this is a MUST read. But if you want a really fun read, this is also good for that.Warmly recommended.

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

Not What Expected By StephieAnn I realize that giving an unfavorable review in Charles Dickens is unheard of, however I found this book lacking a good plot, confusion with characters and it didn't seem like he did not know how to end it. I do love his other books, so I guess this one is an exception to the rule! Could not focus for long!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Thoughts from a Bygone Era By Botting Girl Dickens' observations and descriptions of life's many varied situations are inspiring and thought-provoking. It doesn't matter that he lived in the 1800s because his remedies are still of great value.

“Mr. Eno has established himself as one of the most vital, distinctive voices in the American theater over the past decade. Once encountered, his style is not likely to be forgotten: Wryly humorous and deeply engaged in the odd kinks and quirks of language and its fuzzy relationship to meaning, his plays are also infused with a haunted awareness of, and a sorrowful compassion for, the fundamental solitude of existence.” –New York Times“An anarchic and deliciously clever play.” –Huffington PostThis wildly funny and subversive take on the archetypal family drama is dense with authentic feeling and pain and it ultimately evolves into something haunted and mysterious and grand, even hopeful. The Open House won a Drama Desk Award, the 2014 Obie Award for Playwriting and the 2014 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. It was on the Top Ten Plays of 2014 lists of TIME magazine, Time Out New York and the NY Daily News. Will Eno is the author of The Realistic Joneses and Thom Pain (based on nothing) , which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Other works include Middletown, The Flu Season, Tragedy: a tragedy, Intermission and Gnit. He is a Residency Five Fellow at Signature Theatre in New York. DO you reckon Tom Sawyer was satisfied after all them adventures? I mean the adventures we had down the river, and the time we set the darky Jim free and Tom got shot in the leg. No, he wasn't. It only just p'isoned him for more. That was all the effect it had. You see, when we three came back up the river in glory, as you may say, from that long travel, and the village received us with a torchlight procession and speeches, and everybody hurrah'd and shouted, it made us heroes, and that was what Tom Sawyer had always been hankering to be.

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

By Daren Henry Wilkerson If you really want to sink your teeth into three of Mark Twain's greatest characters, read this book. I actually prefer it over Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain went much deeper in defining the characters; Tom thinks he knows everything and loves to argue, Huck takes everything literally and loves to argue back, and Jim is well. . . Jim! I will say this: If anyone has ever found the portrayal of Jim offensive, it's no different here, but I'm assuming that if you're considering reading this, you must have enjoyed the other two books. So, what are you waiting for, read it!

Tom kinda craves notoriety as he competes for the unofficial title of Hannibal's First Traveler. Then Tom, Huck and Jim are accidentally kidnapped by a mad inventor and go sailing off in a hot-air balloon. They eventually find themselves adrift over the Atlantic Ocean but when they sight land, it is not Europe! This book is told with youthful zest and slangy vocabulary by an admiring Huck in the first person, so that he can praise Tom's leadership skills and powers of argument! The three unintentional argonauts finally realize that they are sailing over the Sahara Desert, where they have a variety of adventures, interspersed with juvenile deductions and debates. Their adventures are right out of Arabian Nights: no magic lamp or genies, but caravans, lions, mirages, warring Bedouin tribes, devastating sand storms! All interspersed with Tawin's wry humor as he slips in some snide remarks about more serious social issues (spoken through the mouths of babes). Not much of a plot, but plenty of lively dialogue as the boys try to argue using logic and indulge in youthful dreams of sudden fortune. A fun read with sly social criticism. But really, Mark Twain, Tigers--in Africa???

I'm surprised that I wasn't made to read it back in junior high or high school, when I undoubtedly wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. It's not nearly as in-depth a tale as Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, but nevertheless it's an enjoyable, light read about three friends going on an amazing journey. There are strong elements of steampunk in this, which is doubly wonderful because it was actually written during that very same period. The best part of all are the stories, discussions, and arguments between Tom, Huck, and Jim over the course of their travels.

“Peter,” said my father, with a stern look, though the tone of his voice had more of sorrow in it than anger, “this conduct, if you persist in it, will bring ruin on you, and grief and shame on my head and to your mother’s heart. Look there, boy, and answer me: Are not those presumptive evidences of your guilt? Where did they come from?” He pointed, as he spoke, to several head of game, pheasants, partridges, and hares, which lay on the ground, while I stood before him leaning on my gun, my eyes not daring to meet his, which I knew were fixed on me. My two dogs crouched at my feet, looking as if they also were culprits and fully comprehended the tenor of his words.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A rewarding story of high adventure By Reliquiae Peter the Whaler (not to be confused with the author's other books, Peter Trawl: The Adventures of a Whaler or The Two Whalers), was published in 1851, the same year as Melville's great whaling tale. This was William H.G. Kingston's first book for boys. Apparently, it was so well received that, going forward, he devoted himself to writing for this enthusiastic audience. Well over 100 books for boys and young people would follow. This is a very nice Kindle edition. My only gripe is that the Table of Contents (36 chapters) is located inconveniently at the back of the book.Like many of Kingston's stories, this one takes place on the high seas, at least in part. It contains all the ingredients of a great boy's adventure tale: shipwrecks, kidnapping, piracy, whaling, and survival in the untamed Arctic. And also like his other books, this one is a moral tale. It follows the early life and adventures of a wayward boy. At the beginning of the story, Peter, a clergyman's son, has fallen in with another delinquent youth. Eventually, Peter is caught poaching, and in a well-intentioned effort to reform the errant lad, the magistrate consigns him to service on a ship carrying cargo and emigrants to Canada. Now separated from his home and family, young Peter must learn the harsh realities of a sailor's lot and the difficult lessons which that life entails.Life onboard the ship is far from pleasant for Peter and even worse for the poor emigrants forced to endure deplorable living conditions throughout the voyage. "They were looked upon by the officers as so many sheep or pigs, and treated with no more consideration," Peter laments. Actually, Kingston often wrote about the plight of emigrants and even led an organization that promoted improving the British immigration system.Peter's voyage to North America is not without its tragedy and adventure, which becomes a pattern for the action that follows in the remainder of the story. Indeed, for the balance of the book, life for the young man is one exhilarating escapade after another, each of which calls upon his courage and helps to form his character. In fact, just about all of Peter's adventures include mishaps and calamity, and it is in these that the author is at his best as a storyteller and moral guide. Allowing Peter to narrate the events lets the reader experience his adventure and observe how each circumstance works to develop character and virtue. The author obviously wrote in another age for boys who longed to do the daring deeds they supposed decent men did. Kingston embraced his role as a moral mentor for youth in these manly pursuits. He was not alone in that endeavor but was part of a golden age of adventure writers like G.A. Henty, R.M. Ballantyne, and George Manville Fenn. Sadly, the works of these writers have been mostly consigned to boxes and back shelves awaiting rediscovery by a new generation that will enjoy and revere them again.Peter the Whaler is a fine read and a great place to start enjoying William H.G. Kingston's novels. Notwithstanding copious 19th century nautical details, some archaic vocabulary, and a few insensitive appellations (e.g., references to native American "savages" and a nasty pirate frequently called "the black"), the book is a gem of an adventure tale and well worth the time and investment it will take to become absorbed in it.

To stand out in a crowded workplace, you can't act in the same way and at the same pace as everyone else. It’s that simple. Identify every opportunity that exists to create a competitive advantage, from meetings to performance reviews and ask yourself, "am I really doing anything different from those around me to advance my career more rapidly?" If the answer is no, you're at risk of fading into the background and being another face in the crowd. If yes, you're either a liar or a very successful businessman or woman.

The way it is written takes some getting used to, but it is an endearing story about a couple of little girls who go through things that girls their age should never have to experience. I'm excited that all of the books from this author are free on Kindle and hope that the others are as good as this one!

Opera might be one of the greatest of the performing arts, but it is also inherently funny. Who is more qualified to find the humor in opera than someone who has sung it for many years? Kathy Minicozzi strips away the boring, stuffy dignity and false glamour that people have imposed on opera for centuries and, like someone poking innocent fun at a good friend, spews plenty of knee-slapping, eye-watering hilarity. In between the laughs, the author manages to drop real information, not only about opera itself but about the lives of the singers who perform it.

Sullivan In Opera For Those Who Don't Like It, Kathy Minicozzi shares insider information about the opera world with the reader in a charming and humorous way. Her straightforward, honest style carried me along on a wave of smiles. Often there were laugh-out-loud moments. Revealing are the idiosyncrasies of the players: sopranos, tenors, basses, conductors, stage manages, certain nationals, and more. You feel somehow you have made a connection with their psyches. The author admits to loving opera even as she pokes fun at it. This becomes obvious . She also pokes fun at herself. Some really funny situations that divas find themselves in are expressed in such a way that you feel their pain, and other emotions, e.g. during an audition The book is both informative and a very pleasant reading experience - with some glimpses into the quite earthy (I must warn you) lifestyle of the opera community, Highly recommended.Joan Sullivan

If you hated opera but would not mind it to be, at least, explained to you - this is your book. Difficult plots of all sorts of operas are revealed quickly and with a certain dose of humor. The author also tells us the workings of the opera from within - how it is made, by whom, what voice types are involved and so on. In other words, you could learn all there is to learn about opera in a little more than a 100 pages of lively, humorously clever and entertaining reading.

By Jill Evans This book is informative, very funny in parts and it's remarkable that it's written by such a rare person with a unique life--a real opera diva! My favorite quote of hers is on page 77 "...how many of us get a chance to laugh at a ballet, especially one that is not meant to be funny and that is placed within a tragic opera? Such a chance should never be passed up." That sums up her humorous, irreverent approach that makes the book so enjoyable.

Establish credibility as the new family business leader

Myths & Mortals, Family Business Leadership and Succession Planning provides insights and strategies for successors of family businesses.  Successors often find themselves in the shadow of their parents making it difficult to establish credibility in the family business and tap into their own strengths. The stress of emulating a parent begins to clash with who they are and who they want to be as a leader.

Written by internationally known business strategist and succession planning expert Andrew Keyt, this guide shows you how to establish credibility, take your place at the head of the table, and run your business your way. In groundbreaking research, Keyt interviewed more than 25 successors of family business legends including Massimo Ferragamo, Bill Wrigley Jr., Christie Hefner, and John Tyson to find out how they overcame the challenges successors commonly face. The analysis from that study formed the basis for the strategies presented here—to help you win the loyalty of those stuck in the old way of doing business, and still focused on their former leader's vision. You'll learn how to take charge without sacrificing your own leadership style, and how to get everyone on board with your vision for the business.

Growing up in the shadow of legendary family business leaders creates a unique challenge for successors to the leadership position. You cannot remove the emotional power of family dynamics from the business, but you can change how you choose to react to it. To be successful, you need to create a sense of identity and credibility, and step out of the shadows of your forbears. This guide provides strategies for doing just that, so you can take the reins and be the effective leader your business needs.

  • Overcome the obstacles successors commonly face
  • Win over those still loyal to their former leader
  • Build your own credibility, separate from your parents
  • Develop your own leadership style and do business your way

Credibility is elemental to business leadership, but establishing that credibility is the successor's biggest challenge. Myths & Mortals, Family Business Leadership and Succession Planning helps you plan around the obstacles and avoid common missteps so you can lead more effectively right out of the gate.

Myths and Mortals: Family Business Leadership and Succession Planning, by Andrew Keyt

Review

“It is a slim but fascinating book” (Forbes, October 2015)“Who is it for: Next gens, or indeed anybody who wants to understand the big beasts in business dynasties and what makes them tick” (Business Family, February 2016)

From the Inside Flap

Establishing yourself as a leader, developing credibility, and building authenticity is a challenge for any new leader. This challenge is amplified for family business successors growing up in the shadow of legendary leaders. Myths & Mortals analyzes the tried and true strategies for success employed by some of the world's most well-known successors through interviews with Bill Wrigley Jr. (The Wrigley Companies), Christie Hefner (Playboy), Massimo Ferragamo (Salvatore Ferragamo), John Tyson (Tyson Foods), Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger (Taittinger Champagne), and many more.

Credibility is a virtually unmatched commodity in business. This is particularly noteworthy when a family-owned business transitions to the next generation of leadership. The magnitude of success and "greatness" creates the shadow and makes it difficult for a family business successor to live up to the enormity of their parent. Credibility is absolutely critical, but it can be difficult to obtain because of opinions and assumptions of the new leader being unable to measure up to their predecessor or their inability to unlock the balance between honoring the past and forging a "way forward" that is true to the new leader's voice, vision, and style.

Myths & Mortals offers potential heirs to familyrun businesses, small business owners, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and wealth managers, among others, a deep dive into succession and leadership strategies and practices that can have a huge impact on the company's success and legacy of the family. The key is to create a sense of renewal and to balance leading with fresh, unique ideas, while honoring the principles of past success. Written by Andrew Keyt—internationally known business strategist and succession planning expert—the book outlines approaches to identify the realities of the parent's business approach, assert oneself into the existing legacy, push the limits of the company to address changing trends in effective leadership, and chart one's own course to take the business into the future. This is no easy process, and a one-size-fits-all approach or solution simply doesn't exist.

Myths & Mortals explores relevant and critical topics such as earning one's own reputation, the importance of continual growth and development, successful leadership mindsets, leading with authenticity, living your values, and the valuable learning experiences born from failures and mistakes.

Virtually any reader will be able to relate to the challenges of establishing one's own credibility, identity, and confidence in the business world. Readers will benefit from the experiences of other leaders like them, who created effective visions and employed authentic leadership to bravely usher their family businesses to new heights.

Excellent Teaching Tool for Next Generation Family Business Leaders By Carol Wittmeyer If you are fortunate enough to work with young family business shareholders and successors like I do, then Andrew Keyt’s Myths and Mortals is required reading. As someone who advises a Family Business Club and teaches “Family Business Management” to grads and undergrads, I found Andrew’s book to be a valuable resource for me, my students and next generation business leaders.Andrew interviews highly regarded successors whose stories are candid and honest. The variety of interviews include a broad and appealing diversity of backgrounds, industries and experience levels in a fascinating pedagogy such that students can see their own situation in parts of each story told.Specifically, two themes in the book are helpful for young, impressionable and eager successors as they plan to develop their own unique leadership style: 1) how to build internal and external credibility, and 2) how to build generativity in ways that are relevant to self, family and business. The book offers successors a robust tool set on these themes, one that helps them discover their own unique self. While so much of the family business field is focused on how to get the current generation to let go, it’s important not to overlook another challenge that’s just as important: how to help the next generation let go of the need to replicate the success of their predecessor. “Respect the past,” says Bill Wrigley in the book, “but always do what’s best for the future.”Thank you Andrew for all your hard work and research, and for publishing such an important resource for the next generation of family business owners and leaders. And thank you to the successors interviewed in this book for their confidence, generosity and vulnerability – your stories and lessons are profound and will help generations of family business successors for years to come.Dr. Carol WittmeyerAssociate Professor of Management & Family Business Club AdvisorSt. Bonaventure University, NY

By drjhorak I was skeptical when I read the title of this book and what its purpose would be. Our culture is filled with so many narcissistic leaders that write biographies trumpeting their enormous success. At the same time, for those who study leadership, a growing body of studies suggests something very different actually differentiates successful leaders today. When I saw the list of famous family business leaders that Andrew Keyt writes about in his book, I was very skeptical indeed.Keyt, the Executive Director of the Family Business Center at Loyola, has not only an MBA, but also a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and in Myths and Mortals, he clearly demonstrates a deep understanding not only of family systems theory, but deeper psychological issues that are central to becoming an effective leader.Keyt’s book is based on a qualitative study he conducted on 28 family business leader successors, who ranged from the second generation to the eleventh generation. Their companies ranged in sales from $20 million to multibillion dollar companies (Tyson, Wrigley and Amway). While this book is based on solid research, Keyt writes in a way that the stories of these successors come to life.Instead of a shallow look at the myth of the leader, Keyt addresses how dangerous it can be for the next generation to not unpack the myth and see their parents as human beings that have strengths and weaknesses. He explores that when parents encourage their own heroic myth, the child cannot work their various feelings of disappointment that every child experiences, which in many ways are often more prevalent in families where a parent is absent to respond to the demands of running a business. Subsequently the adult child who holds onto an idealized myth cannot adequately separate and become who they truly are. Additionally, it can create a more entitled and narcissistic leader who cannot accept their vulnerabilities and weaknesses. These more narcissistic leaders subsequently lack the ability to become an authentic leader, and in family businesses, which can lack systems of external accountability, this becomes extremely dangerous.Keyt weaves together a thoughtful blend of Murray Bowen’s family systems theory with a deep understanding of developmental psychology. But this isn’t a dry tome about theory; instead these well-written stories of the second-generation family business leaders illustrate these deeper truths about what it takes to lead a family business when one lives in the shadows of a larger than life mythical parent.I highly recommend Myths and Mortals for anyone interested in understanding the psychological requirements of effective leadership and especially for any family member contemplating succeeding their parents in their business.

By Nirmala Narayan, Market Development Manager,The Initiative for Family Business and Entrepreneurship When a successful family business owner hands the reigns of the business over to the next generation they leave behind a lot more than just business decisions and the day-to-day operations. They leave behind a legacy, a reputation and a recipe for success. The successor has an uphill climb in this situation as they have to establish themselves as ‘worthy’ in the eyes of their family, employees and more importantly themselves. A successor when taking over the family business is faced with many decisions. The most important decision revolves around their leadership style. This process starts with accessing the leadership style of their predecessor and then deciding if the style in question is line with their own style or is there a need to differentiate from it.The author, Andrew Keyt utilizes his extensive experience working with next generation leaders and the results of his ground breaking research involving interviews with more than 25 successors of famous legendary family businesses to frame the narrative for the book. The result of this unique perspective is a book that provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to succession from the point of view of the next generation successor. We suggest this book to anyone who is currently going through a transition, or knows someone who will be going through one in the future. We also suggest the book to parents of next generation leaders as it offers advice on how to nurture the next generation leader.

Interesting short novel of New France By Bonnie Lo This is a fictional story of D'Iberville, an actual historical figure of New France in the late reign of Louis XIV. The author puts together a pretty good romance, pitting D'Iberville against his New England rival Gering. They first meet in their youth, duel over and then rescue the object of their affections and then in the course of years, keep on meeting again on opposing sides. While there is quite a bit of literature over early American settlements, this is the first I've read covering New France and its' inhabitants. It's a nice book to read in an afternoon if you like historical fiction but don't want a large reading project.
