I mean it has such great practical advice and Laura presents it in an entertaining and realistic way. Her tone and style is so inspiring and conversational that it feels like your getting advice from a dear friend. I like chapters 4,5 and 6 where Laura talks about picking the people who influence you and eliminating those influences in your life that don't have a positive impact on you. The chapters are so short and bite-sized that you can read this book in one sitting. But I can see myself referring to it over and over again because the wisdom in it is so timeless. The best part is I would definitely get this book for young people even high school students because this book is that good. I highly recommend your get this book, then give it to your teenager or twenty-something year old kid to read.

From the Inside Flap

Opportunities and new markets appear unpredictably, and reacting to them quickly and aggressively is more important than ever for large enterprises. The monolithic nature of the enterprise, however, is quite often directly at odds with the notions of innovation and the lean methodology. For the leaders of such enterprises, a complete rethinking of strategy is in order.

Enter The Lean Enterprise, which provides enterprise leaders a detailed examination of the motivations that drive innovative individuals and the support structures they need to deliver breakthrough products and services within an enterprise context. More notably, the book points out examples of the many failures of corporate leadership to empower the very innovators within their walls. Spectacularly successful startups, such as Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram were founded after corporate employees became fed up with the stifling nature of corporate bureaucracy and decided it was easier, and more profitable, to venture out on their own.

Authors and Lean Startup experts Trevor Owens and Obie Fernandez will take you through methods, time tables, compensation, and financial investment related to successful enterprise innovation. They discuss the limitations of traditional innovation structures including skunk works, innovation labs, and intrepreneurship programs while introducing their own solution—the innovation colony. These concepts are illustrated further through a series of case studies and interviews that indicate real-world examples within large enterprises.

With the largest organizations in the world taking note of the obvious advantages of the lean approach, it is only a matter of time before enterprises level the innovation playing field. The Lean Enterprise: How Corporations Can Innovate Like Startups shows you how to unlock the hidden potential within your organization, today.

From the Back Cover The age of the traditional enterprise is over. Tiny, highly innovative, and daring startups rule the headlines and the financial bottom lines of the business world. With markets emerging seemingly from nowhere and no room whatsoever for "second place," speed is the only advantage in this new landscape. Adopting a lean approach more often associated with small startups may be the saving grace for the enterprise, but corporate leaders will have to quickly and energetically embrace this new paradigm to re-level the playing field. The Lean Enterprise: How Corporations Can Innovate Like Startups takes an in-depth look at the methodologies, tools, development strategies, and incentive structures that are helping to guide some of the world's largest organizations to reclaim their innovation prowess.Take an expert tour through the details of leading a lean enterprise--complete with case studies and interviews of successful innovators--to propel your organization to new frontiers in innovation.

By Daniel James The lean movement is new, but value creation is as essential to the human experience as consuming or learning. We all do it. Our businesses do it.However, somewhere along the line, as firms scale, they tend to lose their mojo. The markets shift. Their teams get too big. They stop rewarding failure. And their pace of innovation grinds to a halt. These organizations need a hand. A book. A handbook. This handbook. Why? Because it is thoroughly prescriptive.Skunkworks, intrapreneurship, innovation labs and innovation colonies breed innovation. Innovation requires funding. Funding is contingent upon metrics. Metrics are tied to accounting. This process begets success, but then what? How should compensation work? Answered in this book.Where does vision fit in? Answered in this book. What is the Lean Enterprise process? Answered in this book. Most importantly, multiple paths to innovation are explored: incubation, acquisition, investment, etc. Options for new value creation abound. If you have been around innovation, or even if this is your first foray into the topic, this book is well worth the investment.

Bring Lean Startup Principles to Your Company By Jeremey Donovan The Lean Enterprise answers the question, "How can I drive corporate innovation by instilling the lean startup ethos in my organization?" The book answers this question incredibly well by advising executives to set up an innovation colony with the following conditions:1. physical, financial, & organizational autonomy2. equity incentives for employees as a trade-off for lower base compensation and the high risk of job loss3. Access to a large pool of potential projectsAt first, I really struggled with the authors' premise on two levels. First, I did not feel that companies would agree to the autonomy conditions. Second, I did not feel that many "regular" employees would agree to the high-risk, high-reward trade-off. However, it eventually dawned on me that the book is geared toward companies that do not want to lose the tiny but extremely valuable set of employees who would otherwise leave to start their own companies. If that keeps you up at night, this book is for you.I appreciated the case studies sprinkled throughout the book. As far as I could tell, none of the companies individually featured applied ALL of the authors' lessons. However, collectively they did and I think it is reasonable that the authors put a stake in the ground for what the ideal innovation colony looks like.Beyond that, you get a good survey of:a. lean startup principles: disruptive ideas, small cross-functional teams, customer development, minimum viable product, rapid experimentation, pivot or persevere decision making based premeditated success criteria, etc.b. entrepreneurial financing and venture-capital accountingc. innovation accounting (i.e. focus on metrics that matter)The book also does a good job of exploring different corporate innovation strategies including: incubating internally; acquiring early; and investing. Finally, the book does a good job of giving credit to Eric Ries for the principles he popularized in his 2011 book. However, I would have like to have seen credit given to Steve Blank and Bob Dorf who kicked the whole thing off in 2005 with their exceptionally valuable but admittedly textbook like "4 Steps to the Epiphany."

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Must read for Chief Innovation Officers By Tristan L. Kromer The most comprehensive work on the subject of applying Lean Startup methodology to large corporations to date. It covers a range of practical tactics for lean teams to investment approaches while keeping a consistent overall narrative. This is not a typical coma inducing business books. It keeps you engaged to the last sentence. It's one of the most enjoyable business books I've read.In addition to providing a great overview of different approaches, it's packed with the best interviews on the subject so far. The authors don't skimp and include interviews people who disagree with parts of their main innovation colony thesis. It stays at a fairly high level, best suited to Innovation Officers and C-level execs. If you're a PM, team member, or accelerator manager looking for something about dealing with culture change and how to lead lean teams, you'll have to go back to Jeffrey Liker's The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership.Overall, Lean Enterprise is a book that all large companies should steal liberally from when considering their strategy for innovation.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. retro women in the 1920's - where we came from By Amazon Customer This is an antiquated, but fascinating look at proper "young women's" literature of the 1920's. I was able to read the entire series a number of years ago. This book is the final one of the series, where sweet and proper "Patty Blossom" gets engaged. This is a syrupy, false, and contrived look into the "exemplary" social life of a young, wealthy single girl. She is not too "smart", is spoiled, enjoying social events in her numerous frocks (which are fully described), drinking cocoa, visiting friends, and being wooed by several suitors. Whom should she marry? She is blue-eyed and blonde (of course), and lives a life of luxury with her wealthy father and his much younger second wife. (The first wife expired sometime in the past). This particular story also deals with Patty's introduction to some "Bohemians". She tries, in vain, to understand their artistic, and painfully contrived, social scene. She even dances at one of their programs...GASP! in her bare feet! (NOT like "Dancin' Barefoot" by Patti Smith!) This Patty is a cross between young Shirley Temple, a spoiled air-head, and Scarlett O'Hara. These books are simple and silly. But they give a chauvinistic and "proper" view of this role-model young woman. Worth the read to see what was expected back then. That's why I give it 5 stars. It would never make it past an editor, today. Do NOT expect "Hunger Games"!

Mrs. Amedroz, the wife of Bernard Amedroz, Esq., of Belton Castle, and mother of Charles and Clara Amedroz, died when those children were only eight and six years old, thereby subjecting them to the greatest misfortune which children born in that sphere of life can be made to suffer. And, in the case of this boy and girl the misfortune was aggravated greatly by the peculiarities of the father's character. Mr. Amedroz was not a bad man,—as men are held to be bad in the world's esteem. He was not vicious,—was not a gambler or a drunkard,—was not self-indulgent to a degree that brought upon him any reproach; nor was he regardless of his children. But he was an idle, thriftless man, who, at the age of sixty-seven, when the reader will first make his acquaintance, had as yet done no good in the world whatever. Indeed he had done terrible evil; for his son Charles was now dead,—had perished by his own hand,—and the state of things which had brought about this woful event had been chiefly due to the father's neglect.

The Belton Estate, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

By Bookreader This novel of Trollope's poses his usual question: will the middle class heroine find true love in spite of various social/emotional conflicts? In this case his poverty-stricken heroine has two suiters and must decide between the one she loves and the one who loves her. The dilemma is a tricky one since the man she loves has culture and wealth and breeding but no strong feelings for her; while the rougher and uncultured man who loves her is truly devoted to her. Trollope has written better paced novels but this one does hold the reader until the solution is reached.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite Trollope novels By J. Long This Trollope novel has been one of my favorites for years, the character of Will Belton is wonderful, and the episodes between Clara and her fiance Frederick's family are priceless. There is so much to like about this story, it would be a shame for a reader to pass it up.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. beautiful story, lousy copy By Frank Bosco A wonderful story that hooks you right out of the box...with all the usual "you are there" Trollopian visual descriptions. I think that Trollope was one of the world's great novelists and he does not disappoint here. But the publisher! As noted by other reviewers, misspellings, malapropisms and atrocious punctuation abound and really ticked me off considering the price of this book! There is totally no excuse for this slovenly editing. I think it was done by a computer program...another victim of outsourcing. Another thing is that although the listing is for Dodo press, the copy I received from Amazon was from BiblioBazaar!? So the listed publisher is probably not at fault.

The Boundaryless Organization: Breaking the Chains of Organizational Structure (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership), by Ron Ashkenas, Dave Ulrich, Todd Jick, Steve Kerr

From Booklist Most solutions being recommended today for improving corporate performance prescribe reducing hierarchy by changing organizational structure, altering boundaries, and overcoming barriers within the organization. The authors go much further, calling for a "boundaryless organization," and they consider much more than the traditional and the obvious boundaries that exist within organizations. This book grew out of work done by the authors as consultants hired by General Electric's CEO Jack Welch, who first approached them with the concept of a "boundaryless organization." Applying what they learned in the effort to transform the way GE did business and from numerous other examples, they consider the vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic boundaries that exist for organizations. The authors provide tools to help measure the degree to which boundaries exist, demonstrate the consequences of boundaries, and identify steps to eliminate them. David Rouse

Yes and No By Robert Morris The title is a misnomer: Although the authors do indeed suggest how to "break through the chains of organizational structure", they provide an enlightening explanation of four different types of boundaries (vertical, horizontal, external, and geographic) which give definition to any organization. They do not advocate the total elimination of these boundaries (which is impossible, anyway); rather, they suggest how to rearrange them so that an organization can thrive. For the authors, there is what they call "A New World Order": "In living organisms, membranes exist to give the organization shape and definition. They have sufficient structural strength to prevent the organism from dissolving into an amorphous mess....Like a living organism, the boundaryless organization also evolves and grows, and the placement of boundaries may shift....Because the boundaryless organization is a living continuum, not a fixed state, the ongoing management challenge is to find the right balance of boundaryless behavior, to determine how permeable to make boundaries, and where to place them."This brief excerpt from the first chapter correctly suggests the purpose of this remarkable book: To explain HOW to meet that challenge. The material is presented within four parts plus a conclusion. The first explains how to achieve "free movement up and down" by crossing vertical boundaries; the second explains how to achieve "free movement side to side" by crossing horizontal boundaries; the third explains how to achieve "free movement along the value chain" by crossing external boundaries; and in the fourth part, they explain how to achieve "free global movement" by crossing geographic boundaries." Then in the Conclusion, the authors discuss "Making It Happen: Leading Toward the Boundaryless Organization."The authors also include a series of six questionnaires. By completing each in sequence, the reader is able to determine (a) where her or his organization is now located relative to "the boundaryless paradigm", and (b), what is needed to eliminate the "gap" between where it is now and where it should be. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read The Boundaryless Organization Field Guide. It contains a a hands-on set of diagnostic instruments as well as exercises and tools, and a disk with presentation slides in Powerpoint format.I agree with the authors: The most restrictive organizational boundaries are in the minds of those within an organization. Organizational as well as personal wounds are usually self-inflicted.

"From Domestic Boundaries to Global Village of Tomorrow" By Turgay BUGDACIGIL "Like Marko Polo discovering a new world of trade, organizations today are exploring vast new markets throughout the globe. The process is nothing less than a revolution, breaking down once sacrosanct boundaries of space, time, and nationality...In today's world, there is no longer a dichotomy between domestic and foreign. Global boundaries between companies, markets, and people have become irrevocably blurred...For companies such as Unilever, ABB, and SmithKline Beecham, globalization has become a natural part of their business, an integral part of their culture. For most companies, however, the goal to become truly global in mindset, staff, and market seems a stretch. Although the oportunities are tempting, the effort, knowledge, and skill required are much greater than for running a domestic operation, and the risks-once you probe beneath the surface-are equally enormous"(pp.261-262).In this context, the authors, in Chapter 8, first put forward the following ten reasons why organizations might want to become more global: competitive survival, cost spreading, trailblazing, rule of three, domino effect, evolutionary forces, technological revolution, search for innovation, ripple effect, and benchmarking against other companies. Then, they discuss seven challenges companies face in making the global leap: (1)Establishing a workable global structure, (2)Hiring global supermanagers, (3)Managing people for a global environment, (4)Learning to love cultural differences, (5)Avoiding parochialism and arrogance, (6)Designing unifying mechanisms and a global mindset, (7)Overcoming complexity. In Chapter 9, to overcome these challenges, they show action plans, and suggest ways of moving forward, from learner to launcher and from launcher to leader into the global arena as summarized as below:I- From Global Learner to Global Launcher1. Human Resources Practices* Supply language/cultural sensitivity training.* Standardize forms and procedures.* Set up an overseas presence via joint venture, modest acquisition, or establishment of a headquarters.* Engage in extensive cross-border relationship building.2. Organizational Structures* Arrange short-term visits and international assignments.* Staff for more diversity in management and board of directors.* Use e-mail and videoconferencing to maintain day-to-day contact.3. Organizational Processes and Systems* Establish worldwide shared values, language, and operating principles.* Conduct fact-finding missions.* Design ad hoc transnational teams.* Hold global town meetings and best-practice exchanges of information.II- From Global Launcher to Global Leader1. Human Resources Practices* Seek complete liquidity of human resources: recruit outside the domestic base; place foreign recruits within the domestic base; promote the best people to global assignments; rotate people internationally; use twinning.* Aim for a global structure.* Map global processes.2. Organizational Structure* Provide continuing global leadership trining and regular transnational training to reinforce the global mindset.* Remove/minimize country managers and replace with global managers and focus on global customers.* Routinize real-time global communications.3. Organizational Processes and Systems* Use global reward systems.* Multiply ongoing transnational project teams.* Work for global integration (for example, total global sourcing, global design, global engineering, and global purchasing). Finally, they write that "Many tools are available to organizations, and we have described a good number of them here (as summarized above). But senior management must have the skill and foresight to use the right tools in the right way, at the right time, and in the right sequence...Each stage requires structures that enable the crossing of boundaries, systems and procedures that drive global behavior, and people who can learn to extend their thinking beyond their present outlook."Highly recommended.

A triumphant crusade against fiefdoms By A Customer This is a forward-looking discussion of the paradigm shift from traditional pyramidal organizations to organic, dynamic enterprises that feature permeable boundaries. The book is a triumphant crusade against fiefdoms and for freedom in inter- and intra-organizational life. It demonstrates how "boundaryless" organizations can increase the ability to respond quickly, creatively, flexibly, and in an integrated fashion to market demands. Case studies of change efforts bring the main points alive. Adding to the value of this work are self-diagnostic instruments, charts, and tables. This book is a rich source of insights about organization plus savvy guidelines for taking action. We highly recommend it.

In honor of Sinatra's 100th birthday, Pete Hamill's classic tribute returns with a new introduction by the author. In this unique homage to an American icon, journalist and award-winning author Pete Hamill evokes the essence of Sinatra--examining his art and his legend from the inside, as only a friend of many years could do. Shaped by Prohibition, the Depression, and war, Francis Albert Sinatra became the troubadour of urban loneliness. With his songs, he enabled millions of others to tell their own stories, providing an entire generation with a sense of tradition and pride belonging distinctly to them. With a new look and a new introduction by Hamill, this is a rich and touching portrait that lingers like a beautiful song.

Why Sinatra Matters, by Pete Hamill

From Publishers Weekly Like a musical Elements of Style, Hamill's slim meditation on Frank Sinatra is confident, smart and seamless. Since (and immediately before) Sinatra's death in May 1998, countless tributes have been made to the singer; Hamill (A Drinking Life) seems to be writing to set the record straight, for he knew Sinatra and, before that, knew the singer's music. But Hamill doesn't fawn over Sinatra the way other, younger writers have recently done. Rather, he elegantly tells the Sinatra story, dwelling on the singer's best recordings, dismissing "the Rat Pack, the swagger, the arrogance, the growing fortune, the courtiers," because in the end, he writes, they are "of little relevance." What matters, according to Hamill, is the music, chiefly that of Sinatra's early mature years, when the singer released his celebrated albums on the Capitol label. Where a starry-eyed author might vaguely praise these albums for their pathos and vulnerability, Hamill points out that, before the singer's Capitol comeback years, Sinatra's fans were almost exclusively young women. The stubborn, post-Ava Gardner heartache of Sinatra's later records, however, with their lack of self-pity, gained Sinatra a chiefly male audience. Of this, perhaps the singer's greatest musical period, Hamill writes that Sinatra "perfected the role of the Tender Tough Guy.... Before him, that archetype did not exist in American popular culture." That may be true, but Hamill sets his book apart from the many others about Old Blue Eyes by tempering intelligent superlatives with the retelling of touching, revelatory moments the two men shared. Hamill's is a definitive introduction to Sinatra's work. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The barrage of recent Frank Sinatra books has resulted in his being the most written-about celebrity in the world after Monroe and Presley. Hamill's slim essay is distinguished from other recent works by its objective focus on the components of the late singer's enduring musical legacy. Veteran writer Hamill (e.g., A Drinking Life, LJ 1/94) is comfortable in the New York City milieu of late nights, saloons, and prizefighters, and he has captured the essence of Sinatra, who created something that was not there before he arrived: an urban American voice. The book's strength is its insight into and evocation of the Italian American immigrant experience that had such a strong influence on Sinatra. Minor weaknesses are an oversimplified examination of prejudice and an underdeveloped 1974 vignette about Ava Gardner that fails to make its point. Recommended for public and academic libraries.?Bruce Henson, Georgia Inst. of Technology, AtlantaCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist A combination biography and cultural analysis by the author of A Drinking Life (1993). In Hamill's view, Frank Sinatra was important for two reasons. First, Sinatra represented the fulfillment of the American Dream. A first-generation Italian, young Sinatra experienced anti-immigrant biases firsthand. Yet for all its flaws, America still offered substantial opportunity, and by the time he was 15, Sinatra dreamed of singing professionally. Of course, he accomplished this and more, but throughout, Hamill asserts, Sinatra the superstar never forgot his humble roots. Second, Sinatra gave us a new sound, the "urban American voice." When Sinatra broke onto the scene in the early 1940s, the avuncular and soothing Bing Crosby was the singer. But Sinatra's songs were very different, edgier, more passionate, with a fair amount of swagger, yet always returning to what Hamill argues was Sinatra's central theme, loneliness. A heartfelt and intelligent tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes. Brian McCombie

It was a strange evening; he was obviously at the end - he couldn't remember the words to his songs or read the teleprompter. Few people left however - the evening soon became about us - his fans - letting him know that we still loved him. "I LOVE YOU FRANK!" a huge, middle-aged, rough-looking man yelled out during a pause. Sinatra, taken aback by the violence of the outburst, chuckled and replied, "I love you too, pal." As Pete Hamill once pointed out, "Seeing Sinatra in ruins is like seeing the Coliseum in ruins - it's still magnificent."Why Sinatra Matters is a must-read for any Sinatra-phile. In the Overture, Hamill cites Sinatra's death as the impetus for writing this book. He saw all these young reporters from MTV and VH1 doing stories on Sinatra (obviously prepared in advance) telling the world Sinatra was important, without really understanding why. It certainly wasn't just because he did it "his way."This is a very short book. As Hamill points out it is not a "definitive biography" - although once he was in talks with Sinatra to write just that. It is, as the title plainly states, an explanation of why Sinatra matters - artistically and culturally - and why he always will. In terms of Culture, Hamill reminds the reader of a time when America felt it was morally obligated to persecute Italians - Sinatra helped change all that. Musically, the reasons are more complex. To put it succinctly, no one ever sounded like Sinatra before. The book is great because it also sheds light on Sinatra the man, who is often lost in the obscurity of his own public image. He was not just some gruff tough guy - a kind of idiot savant who could churn out a great recording in one take. He was a fiercely intelligent, well-read, well-cultured, self-educated man who worked hard at his craft. The most enjoyable parts of the book are the conversations Hamill recounts between himself and Sinatra. Most shocking of all - to me at least - was to imagine Sinatra using the F-word!

The book is part bio, part history of immigrants in America, and part memoir. It works on all levels. Hamill treats Frank with the respect he deserves. The book is not a gossipy memoir--Kitty Kelly fans should look elsewhere. Instead, he makes the important arguement that Sinatra gave voice to first, a generation, and then an entire country. His artisty is what matters. The myth of the man is fun and gets most the attention, but that is besides the point for Hamill. And he is right. We all talk about the "Sinatra in a hat" (as Hamill dubs him) and the Rat Pack--but the music endures. It is, argues Hamill, what matters in the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. It is what will stand the test of time and give voice to a thousand broken dreams, hearts, and help us--like Frank after the Fall--get back up and start all over again. Thanks, Pete Hamill for getting it right.

I have walked the streets of Hoboken. It reminds me of Bay Ridge, but the Statue of Liberty is facing the other way, and the Twin Towers are so big and close. My father had a bar in Brooklyn: a place that catered to the lonely: longshoreman who didn't want to go home for whatever reasons, older women who were jilted by the latest bum. They drank, a concordat of losers. In silence, they smoked unfiltered cigarettes and listened to that guy on the jukebox. The guy who really felt their pain, decades before it became some rank political joke. The voice was Frank Sinatra's, and he was my hero since I could walk. Pete Hamill, whom I've been reading for over twenty-five years, has the lapidary's eye, the poet's words, in his brilliant analysis of Sinatra the man, and what his essence really meant. Speaking of Sinatra after his death, Hamill writes: "Now Sinatra is gone, taking with him all his anger, cruelty, generosity, and personal style. The music remains. In times to come, that music will continue to matter, whatever happens to our evolving popular culture. The world of my grand-children will not listen to Sinatra in the way four generations of Americans have listened to him. But high art always survives. Long after his death, Charlie Parker still plays his version of the urban blues, Billie Hoilday still whispers her anguish. Mozart still erupts in joy.....In their ultimate triumph over the banality of death, such artists continue to matter. So will Frank Sinatra." This slim volume is the best thing I've read about Sinatra. Hamill hides no blemishes, and still gives us a totality of the man that no other biographer could. Alas, most great singers and writers now repose on the other side of the grass. We no longer have Sinatra in the flesh, yet, through his music, he will outlive everyone. And in the year 2067, a young adult will listen to the unparalleled majesty of his voice for the first time, and then go to the library to read WHY SINATRA MATTERS by Pete Hamill to make some sense of it all. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original. Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play.

Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

The gardens of Clavering Park were removed some three hundred yards from the large, square, sombre-looking stone mansion which was the country-house of Sir Hugh Clavering, the eleventh baronet of that name; and in these gardens, which had but little of beauty to recommend them, I will introduce my readers to two of the personages with whom I wish to make them acquainted in the following story. It was now the end of August, and the parterres, beds, and bits of lawn were dry, disfigured, and almost ugly, from the effects of a long drought. In gardens to which care and labor are given abundantly, flower-beds will be pretty, and grass will be green, let the weather be what it may; but care and labor were but scantily bestowed on the Clavering Gardens, and everything was yellow, adust, harsh, and dry. Over the burnt turf toward a gate that led to the house, a lady was walking, and by her side there walked a gentleman.

The Claverings, by Anthony Trollope

After being set onto Phineas Finn a year or two ago, I have been unable to stop a frantic Trollope binge-reading. I thought, however, that I had (unfortunately) read everything Trollope had written, but stumbled across this one.It is absolutely wonderful. I'm not sure anyone does love triangles as well as Trollope, and The Claverings offers one of his best yet (Harry, Julia, and Florence). Trollope sets it up such that the reader isn't quite sure where Harry's heart should lie in the end (I, for one, wanted Trollope to pull a Phineas Redux and have Harry end up with "Madame Max." But he doesn't, for many good reasons, none of which will make you feel that it couldn't have ended up well with...well, I won't give away the story.)Needless to say, The Claverings is more than a love story, in classic Trollope fashion. At its most profound, it's a difficult soul-searching of what matters most in life, and how best to get there. And, unlike many of Trollope's other works, he doesn't leave a clear safety net under his characters - you really aren't sure things are going to work out, after all.I would heartily recommend this to anyone who is either an old Trollope pro or someone wanting to get a taste of Trollope for the first time. Perhaps you, like me, will find the world of Trollope to be rich and worthy of a year or two of your free time.

A Male, Victorian Version of Austen's Emma By Catherine Decker If you enjoy seeing good, but fundamentally human and weak, characters involve themselves in rather funny, socially embarrassing positions, this is a great novel for you. I'm too feminist to rate this novel a five-Trollope's accurate portrayal of the vulnerable position of women in Victorian society unsettled me. There is no powerful, outrageous woman figure like Mrs. Proudie of "Barchester Towers"-Mrs. Proudie does get a one-line mention in the novel, however! There are some wonderful minor characters here-Archie, Sophie, and Boodles are wickedly fun. If you are a Trollope addict not yet familiar with this novel, I'd say this is a sort of happy "Small House at Allington." If you are familiar with Rousseau, you will recognize the main character Julie is Trollope's variation on "Julie ou La Nouvelle Heloise" sans the premarital or adulterous sex. If all this is mumbo-jumbo to you, the book is a wonderful depiction of Victorian life featuring a love triangle.

A MUST FOR TROLLOPE FANS By LINDA LEVEN IF YOU ARE A FAN OF ANTHONY TROLLOPE, DO NOT OVERLOOK "THE CLAVERINGS"."THE CLAVERINGS" MAIN PLOT CONCERNS A YOUNG WOMAN WHO GIVES UP THE MAN SHE LOVES - AND WHO LOVES HER - TO MARRY AN OLD, VERY RICH, UPPER CLASS GENTLEMAN. THE MARRIAGE IS A MISERABLE FAILURE, BUT LUCKILY THE OLD GENTLEMAN DIES, LEAVING ALL OF HIS FORTUNE AND PROPERTY TO HIS YOUNG WIFE. IN THIS MARRIAGE, THE WIFE'S REPUTATION IS ALSO SULLIED BY RUMORS THAT SHE IS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH ANOTHER MAN.WHEN THE YOUNG WOMAN FINDS HERSELF A WEALTHY WIDOW, SHE DISCOVERS THAT SHE IS UNABLE TO ENJOY HER WEALTH AND TITLE DUE TO THE SLANDEROUS RUMORS THAT BESMIRCH HER CHARACTER. HER WEALTH BRINGS HER NO JOY AS SHE IS ALONE AND SOCIALLY RUINED. SHE THUS BEGINS A CAMPAIGN TO WIN BACK HER FIRST LOVE WHOM SHE WISHES TO SHOWER WITH HER RICHES.PERHAPS THEN SHE WILL FIND HAPPINESS AND RESTORE HER TARNISHED REPUTATION.IN THE MEANTIME, HER YOUNG MAN WHO TRULY LOVED HER HAS BECOME ENGAGED TO ANOTHER FAR LESS HANDSOME AND QUITE POOR WOMAN.THE MAIN ACTION OF THE BOOK REVOLVES AROUND THE RELATIONSHIP THAT DEVELOPS BETWEEN THE ENGAGED YOUNG MAN WHO CANNOT TELL HIS PAST LOVE THAT HE IS NOW ENGAGED, AND THE NEWLY WIDOWED WOMEN WHO IS UNAWARE OF HIS ENGAGEMENT AND ATTEMPTING TO WIN HIM BACK.AS IN ALL OF TROLLOPE'S BOOKS, THERE ARE MANY SIDE PLOTS THAT ARE EQUALLY AS PSYCHOLOGICALLY INTERESTING.ANTHONY TROLLOP DELVES INTO THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ALL HIS CHARACTERS. IT IS NOT AN 'ACTION' BOOK BUT A STUDY OF LOVE AND GREED AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES.I IMMENSELY ENJOYED THIS BOOK.

The Perfect Planning Guide for Book clubs! The African American author is often overworked, overlooked and underrated. That coupled with the closing of many bookstores, which had long been the gathering place for these authors, and the emergence of E-readers, has changed the way in which our writers and readers meet and converse. Though book clubs have long been a cornerstone of the African American community, at no other time in our history has it been more important for readers to support African American authors and to help fill the void left by the closing of our brick and mortar stores. A well organized book club can be invaluable in spreading the news about great books and talented authors and what better way to achieve that than bringing these two groups together in a well-planned and executed literary event. Plan It! The Complete Resource Guide for Authors, Book Clubs, & Literary Event Planners provides anyone who wants to start a book club with an all-in-one guide to planning book club and literary events. This required companion includes forms, checklists, and tips to start and manage book club meetings, author visits, and planning full-scale literary events. Not just for book clubs, though, this handy guide also provides authors and event planners with the information they need to make any event a resounding success.

The content inside is organized, to the point, and includes sample forms, outlines and helpful tips for not only planning literary events, but provides leadership tools for managing social activities such as book clubs.I liked the examples from previous mistakes included as a guide to prevent repeated faults. I was really inspired by the efforts put in to keeping the book club interesting and readers engaged as well. The secret pals was just one of the many great examples that sounded not only unique, but like a lot of fun. The community outreach activities suggested, along with Sharon’s motivation for staying committed to the book club is truly what seals the overall makings of a commendable resource guide perfect for authors, literary planners, book bloggers and anyone who supports literature. Commendable!

Trading Beyond the Matrix: The Red Pill for Traders and Investors, by Van K. Tharp PhD

Amazon.com Review Q & A with author Van K. Tharp What prompted you to choose the book title, Trading Beyond the Matrix: The Red Pill for Traders and Investors?

When I saw the movie The Matrix, I said, "I don't know if the writers really understand how true their metaphor is!" That's because there really is a Matrix that masks reality. That Matrix is our beliefs. Sometimes I'm totally amazed at the beliefs society and other people try to impose on us. And a long time ago I realized that we need to look at our beliefs in terms of utility. How useful are they? When I adopted that belief, my life changed forever.

Anyway, this book is my attempt to convey just that. When you realize that everything is programmed, then you can be like Neo in the movie and reprogram yourself. When you do enough transformation, you might even be able to step outside of the Matrix . . . which is what I call "Trading in the Now." So this book really is the "red pill" for traders and investors.

This book is really about transformation, is it not?

Exactly. I've always known that my mission was transformation through a financial metaphor. My whole staff thrives on frequent comments like: "You have changed my whole life for the better, thank you." We had a staff meeting several years ago and decided that we should really promote the mission. For example, I occasionally hear people say that if Van Tharp knows so much about trading, then why doesn't he just trade? Well, the presupposition behind that statement is that "the be all and end all" of life is the money you make from trading. It's not for me. It's what I just explained.

One of my staff members suggested that perhaps I should write a book about transformation and I found that very exciting. I've already written a five-volume course on peak performance trading and I really didn't want to duplicate that in discussing psychology. So at this point none of my books have been what I'd call an in-depth psychology book--that is until this one. But transformation gave me a new angle to really talk about the "you" factor in trading, as one will read in this book. We believe that we take our clients through three levels of transformation--this is what's covered in the book. The first level is the core beliefs that come out of my modeling work with top traders. You have to share a top trader's beliefs to become one. I've never seen anyone else provide all of this material together, so we call it Tharp Think. So, the first section of the book is about how people transformed themselves using Tharp Think principles.

Second, most people can't just adopt those principles. Instead they have to transform themselves. The second part of the book goes through various transformation techniques that will help you adopt Tharp Think. However, my approach in the book is rather unique. I have one chapter devoted to each of a number transformational techniques, the first one being how to look at and change your beliefs. Each chapter also focuses on one person's transformation using one of the techniques. It is a lot like a story about transformation.

Lastly, if you do a lot of personal transformation, then your level of consciousness will tend to change. For example, everyone knows what happens when you trade out of "fear" or "greed," which are rather low levels of consciousness. Now imagine what would happen if you traded from "acceptance," which is a much higher level. The results would vastly improve. And how about if you could trade from "an enlightened state" in which there was no internal chatter and you just see the market for what it is. The trader who wrote Chapter 16 trades from such a state and her results are phenomenal.

R multiples is a big focus in the book. It helps take the bias out of trading it helps on the psyche. Can you go into more detail about this?

One of the principles of Tharp Think is that you should predefine your risk (which I call R) before you enter a trade. Another key principle is that you should always think in terms of reward-to-risk throughout the course of a trade. I encourage people to do this by thinking about their profit and losses from a trading system as a function of the initial risk. For example, if your initial risk is $1000 and you make $5000, then you made five times your initial risk or a 5R profit. If you lose $500, because you raised your stop, then you lost half of your initial risk or minus 0.5R.

When you start doing this regularly, it becomes ingrained to think about reward to risk (and how often do you hear the media talk about that). The average R value of the results is the expectancy of your system. You also realize that a trading system can be characterized by its R-multiple distribution. And you can ever measure the quality of a trading system. So there are huge advantages of using R-multiples.

Can you address the topic of women and trading?

Absolutely. For whatever reason, women are not attracted to trading as much as men. About 10-15 percent of the people who come to our workshops are women and about 10-15 percent of the people in our database our women. I think women are every bit as qualified as men, but they need to make the decision.

There is some good news. I had four women join my Super Trader program in 2013--and that quadruples the number of women enrolled. The women in the program are doing well, so I would definitely encourage more to start.

The book provides a great foundation to develop training workshops about your trading methods; do you hold workshops or training sessions?

We have several home study courses, an expanding selection of online courses, at least 12 different workshops, numerous books, and a super trader program that combines all of that. So if you think you are weak in some area, like understanding the basics, needing a trading system, developing a trading plan, or working on yourself, we have workshops for all of it.

The book speaks to the reasons why someone is not trading. Is your objective in the book to help them evaluate their situation and help them start trading again?

I'd be disappointed if that's all it did. I'm expecting a lot of people to tell me or my staff that this book changed their life--that's a lot more rewarding to me. Imagine, there really is a matrix and there really is a red pill you can take to get out of it--the red pill is this book.

From the Inside Flap

In the sci-fi movie classic The Matrix, the hero, Neo, was given a choice: take the red pill and see the world as it truly is, or take the blue pill and wake up in his bed believing whatever he wants to believe. Of course, Neo takes the red pill, and the adventure begins. Now, what if there were a real Matrix and a real red pill?

A trading and investing guide unlike any other, Trading Beyond the Matrix is your red pill. It invites you to see a new world if you have the courage to free yourself from a lifetime of programmed thinking about what's possible and what's not, including what you deserve out of life. Discover new ways to dramatically improve your trading results and your overall financial well-being by looking within yourself and shining a light on the engrained ideas, beliefs, and perceptions that influence every one of your trading decisions and that may keep you from the success you deserve.

Written by the legendary Dr. Van K. Tharp, Trading Beyond the Matrix is the culmination of his thirty years spent helping traders become the very best they can be. He has observed traders progress through a journey of three stages, the first of which is "Tharp Think." At this initial stage, you will learn a set of powerful rules that Dr. Tharp developed during his financial modeling work with numerous Super Traders. Time and again, these rules have been proven to deliver big returns for traders who understand how to apply them.

On the next leg of your journey, you will take your first giant step on the road to transforming yourself as a trader. You'll learn to take a hard look at your fixed beliefs about trading and the markets, where they come from, and you'll begin to understand that, in Dr. Tharp's words, "You don't trade the markets, you trade your beliefs about the markets." You also will learn to identify which beliefs are healthy, productive ones and which aren't and begin to release yourself from their hold. And that's just the beginning of your transformational journey taking the red pill.

In the final stage of your journey, you will begin to awaken to life beyond the Matrix. Like Neo, you will learn to transcend your programming and discover the true power lying dormant within you. Here Dr. Tharp arms you with the tools you need to take an evolutionary leap forward as a trader—and as a person.

More than just another collection of "surefire" trading strategies and techniques, Trading Beyond the Matrix takes you on a journey of self-discovery, during which you will come to understand who you really are, how your personal psychology affects your every decision, and what, with Dr. Tharp's guidance, you can become: whatever you desire . . . even a Super Trader.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Trading Beyond the Matrix

"Tharp Think has always been at the cutting edge of trading technology . . . now be prepared to go way down the rabbit hole of transformational trading. You will discover that the 'holy grail' system has everything to do with the newest frontier in trading and that the Ultimate Edge in trading is spirituality. This is a must-read for people who want to find out how to take their trading to the next level."

—LIBBY ADAMS, PhD, Executive Director, International Academy of Self-Knowledge

"Dr. Tharp's new book shows traders how personal psychology can work for you instead of against you, how to think about and manage risk, and how that can translate into developing a winning trading system. I am adding his latest book to the top 10 must-read books for all traders."

—LANE J. MENDELSOHN, founder, TraderPlanet.com

"The proof of a great system is that someone can duplicate the results using the same methods. Van Tharp's system meets this criterion. Here we have real people with real results. If you want to consistently make money in the markets, read this book and transform yourself!"

—D. JANIE GUILL, former Sr. Director of Worldwide Procurement, Microsoft

"Trading Beyond the Matrix, more than any other of Van's great books, reflects his personal journey. The stories of trading and personal transformation illustrate what 'transformation through a trading metaphor' means. They are inspirational and offer practical guidance and applications that will improve both you and your trading."

—MALCOLM PRYOR, author of the UK bestseller The Financial Spread Betting Handbook

"Tharp saw long ago that successful trading had far more to do with the trader than with the trade itself. Tharp shows us that those traders who are in the highest states of consciousness will naturally be the most successful, not only at trading, but at life as a whole. He gives us a clear set of guidelines and exercises to help us to achieve this new expanded conscious awareness and show us how to achieve happiness on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Trading Beyond the Matrix is a book for everyone. I particularly wish to encourage my many friends in the spiritual community to take advantage of Van Tharp's deep insights about the relationship of matter and spirit."

—STUART MOONEY, author of American Buddha and day trader

"Transitioning to the mental side of trading seemed easy for me. For many, that is not the case and here's where Trading Beyond the Matrix excels. The reader can relate to the stories about actual successful traders who have overcome their own biases, beliefs, and surroundings that held them back from success and how each trader has to figure that out and deal with it before becoming successful."

Van Tharp is one trading author that helped me get over the hump to trading success with lessons from his past books. It is hard to argue against the fact that Van Tharp is the top psychology coach for traders in the world. In this book he reiterates and expands on many key concepts that lead to trading success.1. Trading with the use of R Multiples. Risk a set amount per trade with the goal to make a minimum of three Rs for every one risked. If the trade is does not work out cut the loss at 1R.2. Only trade if you have an edge, which is defined by only taking the very best trading opportunities, position sizing correctly, being in control of your feelings, and having a great risk to reward ratio, etc.3. To be a successful trader you must know what your trading objectives are, how much do you want to make in a year? What percent of return are you looking for?4. You need defined goals of whether you want to trade for a living, make a million dollars, or just for capital appreciation.5. A primary goal of this book is to make the leap from trading our opinions about the markets to trading what is actually happening in the markets. The power of this book is in the psychology and spiritual insights shared by both the author and many successful traders that share their journey with the reader with the chapters they wrote for this book.6. Traders must analyze their beliefs to see if they are helpful in their life or need to be discarded for more pragmatic beliefs.7. Traders can overcome negative emotional charges linked to beliefs and circumstances by being mindful of why emotions are surfacing in certain situations.8. The book explains how traders must battle with many different desires affecting our trading due to different persona's battling each other. Traders are fathers, husbands, risk managers, want to be right, want to win, and want to pay bills, these conflicting priorities is what can make traders go off their plans and do strange things that they didn't want to do.9. If a trader's top priority is to be right all the time they will have a very difficult time. Great traders judge a good trade by a trade where a trading plan was followed regardless of the monetary out come.10. The big difference in this book is that Mr. Tharp believes that Super Traders must be in touch with their own inner guidance or a higher power to truly excel in the markets.I got a huge value from this book's teachings. It went deep down the rabbit hole of some super trader's psychology and spiritual paths to success. It really made me much more mindful of my own issues on those levels. This book does have New Age spiritual teachings that may offend church goers and the members of some main stream religions. Agnostics and Atheists will also have trouble with many of the concepts of this book. I had trouble with the spiritual journey and 'miracles' of Chapter 10 and I am very open minded and pragmatic. But that did not diminish the value I received from this book's principles. With that said it is possible to use the spiritual concepts in conjunction with your own spiritual beliefs about a higher power, also Atheists higher power may be probabilities and universal laws and their inner guidance may be logic and reason over emotions. This trading book is one like no other and very helpful with any traders trying to overcome the mental or spiritual side of trading the financial markets which is what trips many up.

He has checklists for all the critical points in his Tharp Think with examples of how people have applied them. If you want to know how top traders think, read this book. I has the information in tabular form, so you can get it quickly. Only only that, Tharp has a complete checklist of everything that you need to put into a business plan for your trading. The checklists and the last chapter alone are worth more than the price of the book.More importantly, it is clear that many people can't follow the key principles of trading. So, to help you, Dr. Tharp has given a step by step program of how you can transform yourself so you can be a great trader - from getting rid of conflicting beliefs to releasing charged feelings that keep those beliefs locked in place. Until now, the only way you could get this information from Tharp was to take one of his expensive workshops or buy his $800 home study course. Now its all here in this book. I can't believe he did this! What's amazing is that some people are reading this book and not getting that. It seems they read to the Internal Guidance part and turn off to the whole book. That just proves a couple of the statements of the book: 1)that whatever you believe, you are right; and 2) spiritual beliefs are at the top of the belief hierarchy. In my opinion, transformation section of the book is the dessert. It really shows clearly how to raise your consciousness and become happier. What's that worth? And if you don't think it is worth a lot, look at the case studies. You can see that when you raise your consciousness you can begin to see the markets exactly as they are without the biases that Tharp talks about in his other books. This book is an absolute gem. Buy it now and read it over and over again until you really get it. I would give it ten stars if I could.

Witkin As one of Van's so-called "Super Trader candidates" and author of the first contributed chapter, I thought it would be worthwhile to make a few comments for many of you traders and aspiring traders who are probably more like me than like Van.Along with Van's written context, the first two-thirds of the book relay real stories from traders who have bought-in to many of Van's concepts. While some of the concepts in these sections are well known to people who have read other trading books with a psychology component, the format is new. Instead of an author giving only his take or providing examples that seem completely beyond reach (e.g., Ed Sekota's returns or those of some of the other Market Wizards), this book has stories contributed by regular people who have applied many of Van's concepts. I love good book knowledge as much as the next guy, but I think having real stories written by the people who lived them is incredibly powerful. I've met a number of the authors and found them to be credible and very down-to-earth.Many of the concepts talked about in these early sections are fairly well accepted by the established trading community at this point - the importance of position sizing (probably my favorite), mental discipline, planning, and removing psychological barriers to success. As is typical for advice generally accepted by any community, other authors, like Elder and Steenbarger, give advice that overlaps in some (but not all) areas. The final third of the book is not nearly as accepted within the trading community - the role of a spiritual practice and belief system to enable trading success. I would not have embraced this part of the book 5 years ago and parts of me still don't accept all of it. Even so, I've come to understand from a logical perspective why it is possible spiritual beliefs could play a key role in trading. If you already accept that psychology is a part of doing the right things in trading, then seeing a role for spiritual beliefs really isn't a tremendous leap. People who are truly spiritual -- meaning they have learned to be at peace with the universe as it is -- are more likely to accept and deal in useful ways with otherwise stressful and challenging situations, like those we face in trading. If you can be a successful trader without adopting spiritual beliefs, great. Van has found they help many people because they have the ability to transform your view of life, which makes them incredibly useful for traders.I would not be surprised if the trading community had as many agnostics and atheists as any community - present company included. But even with those beliefs going in, if you can start making decisions based on what is useful instead of based on your distaste for things you can't see or touch (easier said than done, I know), you may be able to embrace the usefulness and logic -- yes, logic -- of spirituality as it relates to trading and life. If not, then ignore it -- I did for many years -- and many of you will be successful without it. But if what you are doing doesn't work, spend some time thinking about any psychological roadblocks you have that keep you from trying it for a few years and whether those roadblocks are helping you. Finally, I'd like to mention that I've gotten to know Van as a person over the past two years and he genuinely cares about people and transformation, so much so he has chosen to include content in this book that is not (yet) generally accepted. Writing about concepts that are not already embraced is always a bit dangerous; he understands that and is publishing the book anyway because he believes it can help people. In my view, that's brave.I hope you enjoy the book.Dave
