'We go.' The lascar meditatively pressed his face, brown and begrimed with coal dust, streaked here and there with sweat, against the rope which formed the rough bulwark. His dark eyes were fixed on the shore near by, between which and the ship's side the water quivered quicker and quicker in little ripples, each ripple carrying an iridescent film of grey ooze. Without joy or sadness he was bidding goodbye to Bombay, his city. Those goodbyes are often farewells for lascars who must face the Bay and the Channel. But the stoker did not care.

“Sonny, you kin reckon it dead sure, thar’s something wrong ’bout a thing that don’t explain itself.” That was Old Rocky’s advice, given three-and-twenty years ago—not forgotten yet, but, in this instance, respectfully ignored. It happened some years ago, and this was the way of it: the Fox of Ballybotherem having served three generations—in his native Tipperary, in Kaffraria, and in the Transvaal—seemed entitled to a rest; and when, in the half-hour before ‘lights out,’ which is the Little People’s particular own, the demand came from certain Autocrats of the Nightgown: “Now, tell us something else!” it occurred to the Puzzled One to tell of Jock’s fight with the table leg. And that is how the trouble began.

Don't expect this version to be anything like the original c By A Customer If you've never seen the classic original of this book, with its wonderful illustrations, then perhaps you would not be as disappointed as I was when I got the re-written "children's version" with none of the original illustrations. There are occasional "boxed" texts that provide background material, but it's like taking a Beatrix Potter book (e.g., Peter Rabbit) and rewriting it-- it doesn't work. The original is beautifully written, the language is lyrical and the descriptions of the life and the veld take you right into the setting. This book is a poor substitute. If you can find it, get the original by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and read it to your children when they are too young to read it themselves; then they can enjoy it on their own a few years later.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Illustrated), by Washington Irving

Review Abridged but not rewritten, the classic tale is decorated with a plethora of very small, comically gothic cartoons that add an air of spooky grotesquerie. An overall color scheme of pale browns and oranges adds a properly autumnal air to Sleepy Hollow's knobby woodlands, and the supporting cast includes nearly as many ghosts, toothy imps and the like as it does human figures. Grimly's not much for verisimilitude - party guests at the Van Tassels include African-Americans, and there's a glimpse of a generic Native American earlier on - but burly "rantipole hero" Brom Bones looks rightly massive next to the exaggeratedly gawky figure of Ichabod Crane. The Headless Horseman not only sports a particularly eerie-looking twig between its shoulders but rides a red-eyed, demonic steed, and in three views on the final page the decayed schoolhouse has a decidedly haunted air. Still, this is not a particularly scary rendition, and because its text is chopped into scattered, easily digestible passages tucked between or inside the panels, it may have more appeal to less-able readers than full versions. (Fantasy. 10-12) (Kirkus Reviews) --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Washington Irving, a celebrated author, is hailed as the father of the American short story due to famous works such as Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Marston I grabbed this for the Kindle since it was free, and like the previous reviewer, I only had a vague idea of the story from various cartoon versions.I was very pleasantly surprised. I've not read anything else by Washington Irving. The story is simple; the prose is easy to read but in spots is downright beautiful. Some of the scenic descriptions border on poetry. Irving writes with a dry sense of humor; and he has faith in the reader's ability to connect the dots, so he doesn't spell everything out. It's a short read - in print I guess it would be 30 to 40 pages. One GREAT thing about reading it on Kindle is having the dictionary function, as there were a number of archaic terms with which I was not familiar.I give it 5 stars for the combination of price and quality of writing. If you'd like some good writing, a peek into America (upstate New York) at the end of the 18th century, and a little wit, go ahead and grab it - especially if it's free!

53 of 54 people found the following review helpful. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow By A Customer How would you feel if every time you walked outside in the dark, you felt a chill? What if you lived in a town that everyone said was haunted? How would you like it if you were running for your life from a headless horseman? Well that's what the schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane does in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. To begin with this book will keep you on the edge better than any other book. When Ichabod is alone in the woods at night and starts hearing noises you have no idea what's going to happen to him. From experience my heart was pumping faster than it ever had before while I was reading a book. Another good reason to read this book is it will hook you in from the very beginning. It was so good that I was anxious to turn the next page and see what was going to happen. I liked the book so much that I finished the it the same day I started it! The next reason is it can be scary. When Ichobod is in panic as he rides his horse down the road because he is being chased by the headless horseman you don't know if Ichabod will live or die. Even though it may not be that scary in the beginning it gets a lot scarier later on. Besides the book being scary it is also a love story. Ichabod is deeply in love with the beautiful Miss Katrina Van Tassle but unfortunately so is Brom Bones. He is a rough, bold, and strong man that would do anything to get what he wants. In the book he trashes Ichabod's schoolhouse because he caught him talking to Katrina. That still doesn't stop Ichabod from trying to get the one he believes is his one true love. Out of all the books that I have ever read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has hooked me in faster than any other. If you like scary/mystery books this would be the book for you. Although it is a cool book I recommend it to kids 8 years of age and older because of the scary and suspenseful moments the book has in it. So next time you are at the library and want a good book, get The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Then you can get chills in the dark, too!

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable By Mom in Hooville This version of Irving's tale is designed for younger children. The illustrations are lovely--not scary at all. I do think, however, that the text is a little long for a 4 year old to sit through, especially since some of the vocabulary and sentence structure is a bit advanced. I'd say this was appropriate for 6 and up.

Five years removed from his 1990 Juilliard graduation, Donald Braswell is set to be "the next Pavarotti." Braswell's successful career ends, however, not with a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall, but alone, lying in a dirty ditch. Following the hit-and-run accident that steals his voice and future, the "Texas Tenor" struggles with depression and despair-until the night his daughter, Aria, is born. Understanding this new and immediate life change, Braswell fights to relearn how to speak and sing-and how to share this gift of second chances with others. When he auditions for America's Got Talent, his family, his faith, and his entire future hangs in the balance.

By Jeanette Pierce While reading Donald Braswell's personal story, Revival, my emotions ebbed and flowed in concert with his victories and failures, beginning with his graduation from Julliard and his first operatic concert to his tragic bike accident during his first concert engagement, his five "silent" years, trying to recover his voice, his feelings of despair, seeking employment outside the music world, and finally regaining his voice and far more.Donald's wife demonstrates the adage, "behind every successful man is a good wife." After his accident Julie became his coach, cheerleader, and therapist. After his voice returned, he landed a job as a car salesman in San Antonio, Texas and worked on regaining his singing voice, his wife always his encourager. Feeling that his was a great voice, she secretly sent a tape of his singing to "America's Got Talent." He was accepted and sang "You Raise Me Up" and brought down the house, re-igniting his singing career. During those eleven silent years, Donald stood on Julie's shoulders to become more than he could be.Donald sees the accident as God changing the course of his life because He had better plans for him. God used the generosity of his Christian boss at the car dealership, a Christian lady who produces music CD's, and his church to help him in the pursuit of his new music career. God has blessed his family with three daughters, and singing has become a Braswell family activity. Recently life came full circle when he sang the lead tenor role in The Centurion, a Christian musical. He gives God the glory for restoration of his voice. Today he gives back to his community by donating much of his time and beautiful talent to raise money to help the homeless in San Antonio, Texas. As Donald himself said, "God works in mysterious ways."

Impressive By Dave Courtney I enjoy memoirs and opera music is one of my true loves, so when I read the description about Donald Braswell’s book, I decided to do a little research. Once I found Donald’s youtube video, I was hooked. Buying this book was definitely a good buy! I loved learning more about Donald and how he overcame so much. It’s a great read and I hope Donald plays one day again in Florida. I would love to see him live.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Song of Faith By Jowake This is a wonderful story. Donald Braswell starts as a top rated opera singer but due to a freak accident, loses his voice completely. He ends up selling cars, very successfully, but certainly not singing. A total stranger prompts him to try a comeback and with the help of friends, he goes on America's Got Talent and revives his career once more although no longer as an opera singer. This a sensitive story about a man of faith, wonderful written and totally moving. I really cannot recommend it enough.

Good, simple but very incomplete By RangerBob I do really like the simplicity in which Red explains the process of setting up and installing Wordpress. Very good start. However, I was fairly disappointed with the final sections regarding adding content to your site. I feel as if it needs more substance and explanation around much of that topic. Unfortunately - there was very minimal written about how and why "Google loves a Website" - which is what the title eludes the book is about. If the author went back in and edited just his "Checklist" at the end - putting some solid explanations around each of the questions isted - this could be a 4 or even 5-star book. But it needs some additional material at this stage.

Grounded Wodehouse By A Customer If you pick up Mike and Psmith and expect it to be like the wacky comedies that Wodehouse composed in the 20s and 30s, you might be slighted disappointed. This is early Wodehouse, a Wodehouse concerned with school masters, ragging (an expression for creating mischief) and especially cricket. It is also a more grounded Wodehouse, a novel where the comedy is more subtle, a novel where the characters are not quite so flighty. This is also Wodehouse at his least complex. This is not the novel that shows his mastery of the convulted plot, where every word spoken and deed done entagles our heros and heroines in further trouble. This said, I need to quickly confirm that Mike and Psmith is a wonderful novel. It still has a freshness and innocence about it that is highly appealing. In this day and age, of rampant murders and unclear elections, Mike and Psmith is as sunny and cheerful a book as you are likely to find. And just to show you that I read Mike and Psmith with my eyes wide open, I have to state that my early comments are not intended as criticism but as a compliment. The subtlety is the very reason why this novel is so great! It is his art in creating a scene or a character and putting in the interesting setting of Sedleigh that Wodehouse shows why so many refer to him as the Master.Mike and Psmith is not the funniest book Wodehouse wrote, but it does have many incredible scenes, especially Mr. Downing's search for the paint splashed shoe. I agree with the other reviewers that this is the high point of the book. I think readers will find a lot to enjoy in this novel. It is an escape to a world not that far removed for our own but placed in a time that we will never see again. This novel truly scores a century!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Very enjoyable By A Customer I have to confess that I am a Wodehouse addict. I read the predecessor to this book (Mike at Wrykyn) when I was fifteen and had always wanted to read Mike and Psmith. Re. this book, Wodehouse had me in stitches most of the time - the portions relating to Mr. Downing are hilarious. Cricket is also a focus of this novel. If you are like me and miss the game, this will bring those school time memories flooding back. For those who haven't read a Psmith novel before, I highly recommend them. It is said that Wodehouse created the Jeeves and Wooster characters as 2 spin-offs from Psmith and you can certainly see the connections! On the whole, another Wodehouse classic.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Enter Psmith, the Lion of Early Wodehouse Characters By A Customer In this uproarious volume we make our first acquaintance with R. Psmith, whose humorous speech and mannerisms combined with his genius for quickly solving his way out of a jam make him such a memorable character. His readiness with ingenious solutions in the nick of time as well as his punctiliousness of attire both remind us of Jeeves, who wouldn't appear for another eight years; his self assurance foreshadows Uncle Fred of the Blandings stories. As in many of the author's early novels the plot is considerably weaker than in the classic novels that came later, hence my witholding one star. But the individual scenes and conversations are hilarious and make the book a must-read for any Wodehouse fan.

Writing under the pen name “Nessmuk,” George Washington Sears gained an audience while working for Field and Stream magazine; he eventually published Woodcraft and Camping in 1884, and this delightfully informative little booklet has never been out of print in the over 125 years since. Readers young and old can benefit from the insight of Sears, whose advice harkens back to a time before widespread electricity. For people in modern times, these survival techniques are rarely taught outside of scouting clubs, making the skills and practical applications taught in Woodcraft even more valuable for hikers, campers and hunters.

By Matthew Hodges Written in a style akin to my grandfathers, Sears provides some excellent advice to greenhorns as well as old woodsmen. Having camped in established campgrounds as well as backpacking in the backwoods and the Appalachian Trail, I only wished I had read this earlier.Much of the material is dated and many will find it lacking for modern camping in the established campgrounds, however the prudent camper would do well to read and understand what it took to be an experienced woodsman in the days before modern campgrounds.

A Must Have for Any Bushcraft Library By Papa Bear George Washington Sears or "Nessmuk" - his nom de plume, is a must read for all who enjoy the outdoors and camping of the "old ways". This book is one of the best reads for those who practice Bushcraft and Self Reliance in the outdoors. And for any of you followers of Dave Canterbury, this book has had a great influence on the crafting his philosophies for self reliance and his "common man" approach to the outdoors.

Very descriptive and vivid. You'll learn a lot and not be able to put it down. Nessmuk's stories about adventures in the woods are great and will inspire you to spend more time 'out there' and less time inside.

Among the most interesting and picturesque classes of street children in New York are the young Italian musicians, who wander about our streets with harps, violins, or tambourines, playing wherever they can secure an audience. They become Americanized less easily than children of other nationalities, and both in dress and outward appearance retain their foreign look, while few, even after several years' residence, acquire even a passable knowledge of the English language.

Due to the fact I read from a hard copy I did not have all the pages and stuff. Now I can read it again but with most everything there... but of course it does have a few typos. But to get to the story...I was again thrilled, horrified, and warm hearted... as we read of little phil, the hardships the abuse, the pain, and then the change and fortune. I will not lie in some lot of ways this is probably one of the saddest stories by this author I have read, but in a lot of ways one of the very best.(I legit cried when little James or Giacomo dies)Waking people up to the hardship of street boys in that time but at the same time taking us on an exciting adventure of defiance, fear, and victory. I Would definitely recommend.

Lieutenant Sutch was the first of General Feversham's guests to reach Broad Place. He arrived about five o'clock on an afternoon of sunshine in mid June, and the old red-brick house, lodged on a southern slope of the Surrey hills, was glowing from a dark forest depth of pines with the warmth of a rare jewel. Lieutenant Sutch limped across the hall, where the portraits of the Fevershams rose one above the other to the ceiling, and went out on to the stone-flagged terrace at the back. There he found his host sitting erect like a boy, and gazing southward toward the Sussex Downs.

49 of 50 people found the following review helpful. One of the Greatest Book Forgotten and Misunderstood By Amazon Customer The front cover of the book might lead you to misunderstanding that "Four Feathers" is a book about war; actually, though it deals with the war in the Sudan in late 19th century, the book consists of superb descriptions of complicated psychology found in the hero, the heroine and their mutual friend. "Four Feathers" as a whole is not a book like "She" or "Beau Geste," but it is rather a special kind of romance which could be found only in this era.To disprove his disgrace, the hero Harry Feversham, who quit his regiment just before being sent to the Sudan, decides to go to Africa, disguising himself as a Greek, and firmly is determined to give back three white feathers sent to him as a symbol of his being a coward. One clever touch is given here; his fiancee also added one feather to them, and rejected him in the face before their marriage. Now you think Harry must prove that he does not deserve such an act. And probably, you expect the book to draw you into the world full of adventure. No, you're wrong. There are certainly descriptions of adventure under the sizzling sun of Africa, but you must wait. Before they come, we are introduced to the complex relationship between Harry and other characters that are involved in his action. Various feelings of love, regret, courage, and suspicion, all caused as aftermath of the crucial action of sending white feathers, follow with a surprisingly and deeply psychological insight. Though the story is, as you expect, very melodramatic and sentimental, the characters are well-drawn and convincing, and if not as insightful as Henry James, surely deserves much serious attention. The adventure scenes come in the last third of the book, but the suspense is a little diminished due to the rather hasty ending of the book. (If you want to read a book full of adventure in Africa, I recommend P. C. Wren's "Beau Geste," which I found a gripping tale, too.) Still, the descriptions of the House of Stone, concentration camp of POW, (where the author himself visited after the war ended) are still realistic and shocking, and will haunt your mind after reading, and as an adeventure story too, you won't be disappointed. In short, "Four Feathers" is one of the greatest forgotten bestsellers in the English literature.

The Real Four Feathers - Different Than the Movie Versions By Roger Kennedy This book is full of noble ideas and notions of Victorian honor in the days of the British Empire. Those who come to this book after seeing the 1939 Korda classic, or even the more stark 1979 re-make might be in for a suprise. Even as this review is written yet another cineamtic foray is being planned with a Fall 2002 re-re-make. No doubt 21st century notions of Political Correctness shall be heavy handed on this 19th Century classic.Still, I think readers will be in for a bit of a disappointment here. Not for the book itself which is a sublime piece of writing, a work typical ot the pathos of the time, but because of the lack of action contained therein. This is a pyschological and emotional work. The main charcters have many inner feelings to deal with. The plot moves slowly at times, building to a gradual crescendo typical of Victorian novels of the day before it resolves itself in rapid sequences. The film versions convey the general impression of the book, but there are not big clamatic battles of Omdurman or prison breaks which made the Korda movie such a rousing epic. Here Harry Faversham is very much on his own to resolve his fears and inner emotions, as are his friends. Its good to see a book like this revived, but readers who come to it from the movie theater or video are apt to be suprised at what they find here. Lets hope the find the suprise a pleasant and interesting one. I know I did.

Wonderful read By Jenonthetrain I read this book in anticipation of the Sept. 2002 Shekar Kapur movie of the same title.I found The Four Feathers to be an engrossing character examination, with a bit of action as the background. The romance at the center was a bonus, as was the detailed glimpse of life in Britain at that time, the expectations that men and women held for one another and themselves.I was, however, disappointed by the inaccuracy in the synopsis on the book's back cover and repeated on this website which states that Harry Faversham saves the lives of the three men who gave him the white feathers in order to be redemeed.I'm not sure where the writer of the synopsis came by that idea but it sure doesn't happen like that in the book. Not to spoil the story for you, but Harry proves his bravery in rather more complex ways.I also was pleasantly surprised that much of the book is told from the perspective of Ethne, Harry's beloved. Her struggle to "do the right thing" is just as compelling as Harry's struggle to make up for the one time he didn't.

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

Morse Upon finishing Dombey and Son this morning, I thought back to the first Dickens work I ever read, which was David Copperfield, as a freshman in high school. Since then I have read many others, all with the same extensive cast of characters, side plots, etc.....Except this one....which makes me question why it is not used as an introduction to the works of Dickens in school curriculums.Dombey and Son, as a title, refers to the business which provides wealth, title, and position to Mr. Dombey, the aforementioned father. The 'son' refers to a succession of partners in that business, as well as an arrival at the opening of the book, which leads to the demise of Mrs. Dombey. But little Paul Dombey, sharing in his father's first and last names, joins an already present sibling in the world, his sister Florence.Through the course of the novel, you realize that Dombey and Daughter are really the focus of this story....the fortunes and misfortunes that befall them both, the grievous neglect of one for the other, despite the efforts of the one neglected to reconcile...and a host of others that enter and exit from their lives. But to recapture and jusitfy my initial point, this book is a marvelous starting point to read Dickens. It is far easier to keep track of the cast of the story, as it is more limited than other Dickens novels, while sharing the same length as most others. The story lines all really do feed into the central plot, and while the 'comedy' that I so enjoy in Dickens's prose is, admittedly, more limited here...it still is a highly enjoyable tale, and a great place to get your feet wet with one of history's best tale-weavers.Although bittersweet and melancholy in tone, for the majority of the story, Dombey and Son holds up with Dickens's other novels as a true classic.

58 of 61 people found the following review helpful. Ponderous portrait of pride By Royce E. Buehler If you love Dickens, you'll like this book. If you're not committed to the work and style of Boz, you may have a hard time getting through it. It gets off to a very slow start; it wears its didactic aims more prominently on its sleeve than most of Dickens' novels do (the preceding novel, Martin Chuzzlewit, having been a study of the perils of greed, this one is likewise a study on self-destroying pride.) Its heroine is so self-sacrificing, uncomplaining, sweet and forgiving that a modern reader is likely to feel the impulse to throttle her more than once. I found it the least satisfying of the dozen Dickens novels I've read, and have rounded its three and a half stars up rather than down, in honor of all the other good stuff he's produced. All that being said, the book contains plenty of rewards for the persevering. Dombie's daughter, the over-gentle Florence, is more than made up for by a string of sharply drawn women who are nobody's wallflowers: the peppery Susan Nipper, the fearsome landlady Mac Stinger, and the magnificent second Mrs. Dombey, whose inflexible, bent pride puts steel to her husband's flint as the story gains headway halfway through. The plotting is intricate and tight, the peeks into Victorian hypocrisies (never far removed from our own) are trenchant, and we are treated to what is possibly the most riveting death scene in the whole oeuvre, which Dickens chose to present from the decedent's point of view in a stream of consciousness passage as remarkable for its technical daring as its sentimentality.Throw in the superbly menacing, dentally impeccable villain, Mr Carker, and a rogue's gallery of lesser despicables from the streetwise dunce Chicken, to the blustering toady Joe Bagstock, to the second Mrs. Dombey's outrageous tin magnolia of a mother, and it's a book you'd be happy to stumble across in the cabin some snowbound weekend. The Oxford World Classics edition has an extremely useful set of notes, which includes in full Dickens' initial outline of the work.

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Dickens' First Mature Novel By D. C. Cannon I was not overly thrilled with Dickens' previous novel Martin Chezzlewit, despite those amazing American scenes. That was a transitional work - where Dickens was going can be seen quite clearly in Dombey and Son.In Dombey and Son we have the biting satire (the title being the biggest black joke of all) and the more expansive social criticism of Dickens' later work. Dombey is a proud business man and wants an heir. What he does to his children is chilling and his second marriage becomes its own nightmare. Dombey is also where Dickens starts using an overriding symbol for his longer works - here the railroads as a symbol of progress and brute force. The plot is surprisingly linear for such a long Dickens novel - it lacks the myriad of subplots that his other novels have. The going is slow at times but the psychology gets deeper and more intricate as you continue. This novel is too often overlooked but it is a fine work of the author's early maturity. It points the way to Dickens' two best novels which immediately follow - David Copperfield and Bleak House.

"Looks like war, fellows!" exclaimed Frank Sheldon, as, on a cold March morning he came briskly into the business house where he was employed, and slipped off his overcoat. "Oh, I don't know," responded Bart Raymond, Frank's special chum. "It's looked like war ever since the Lusitania was sunk, but we haven't got our fighting clothes on yet. The American eagle keeps on cooing like a dove."

Now glory be to God who has given us the victory! It is true, the strength of Spain is shattered, her ships are sunk or fled, the sea has swallowed her soldiers and her sailors by hundreds and by thousands, and England breathes again. They came to conquer, to bring us to the torture and the stake—to do to us free Englishmen as Cortes did by the Indians of Anahuac. Our manhood to the slave bench, our daughters to dishonour, our souls to the loving-kindness of the priest, our wealth to the Emperor and the Pope! God has answered them with his winds, Drake has answered them with his guns. They are gone, and with them the glory of Spain.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A superb story By Mary I have read many of Mr. Haggard's books, and this is the best by far. It is the story of Thomas Wingfield, whose mother is murdered by a spurned lover, and Thomas's life long quest to seek revenge. Thomas chases the murderer to Mexico, where he becomes involved with Montezuma, and his daughter Otomie, aginst the backdrop of Cortez' invasion and conquest of Mexico. Thomas had left behind a fiance in England, and although he falls in love with Otomie and marries her, he never forgets his first love. This story has romance, revenge, loyalty, struggles with forgiveness, struggles with the ways of a culture foreign to Thomas, when the Aztec's religious human sacrifices revolt him, and later causes a rift between him and Otomie. I just loved this book, and highly recommend it.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Possibly the greatest adventure story I have ever read By Matthew D. Ream I got this because it was free. And I'm a fan of late-Victorian adventures. I wasn't even really familiar with Haggard. I became engrossed in the story very quickly and spent most of my spare time reading this. Now, as I just finished, I am sad, not only for Wingfield's losses, but for my own since I will never again read this story for the first time.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling, fascinating and satisfying! By James C Adams Haggard leads the reader through the fall of the Aztec empire through an emotional first-hand account, through the eyes of one who was a foreigner as we might experience it. Nonstop action, colorful descriptions of this strange culture, and mysterious history is woven together in this classic masterpiece to be enjoyed by a wide audience for years to come.

You press a small button on the back and they light up( the lights flicker, and move) Really cool!!!. I will warn you, they are cheap plastic and very large but come on they are only $7. If you are looking for an actual book this isn't going to satisfy your desires the book is about 3" big but I got them for the Earrings, Not the book!I love them. Arrived in just 2 days on prime .LOVE LOVE LOVE These earrings Wearing them to the new movie!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. OMMIGOD, LIKE, TOTALLY, FER SHURRE!!!!!!!!!!!! By jennifer Jem! Glamour, Glitter, Fashion, and Fame! Also Truly Outrageous, just like these earrings. They're just like Jerrica's pair she received from Synergy. They light up and have a few specks of sparkles in them. They're very fun to wear and they are very fashionable. My only grip/complaint with them is that THEY ARE HUGE!!! (which is both a good an bad thing). I found they dangle slightly off your earlobe(not too terribly bad, but still) because they are kind of heavy, so to make it lighter when I wear them, I removed the watch battery in them(that seems to have fix that problem). My only other complaint is that they are kind of really(but not too terribly) painful to wear. Other than that, I really would recommend buying them to any diehard, hard core, fan of JEM and The Holograms!(Also: the booklet is very informative and gives you a good over view of the series for season 1 for any fan to introduce someone new to the show.)

From the Back Cover

Whether the concept being studied is job satisfaction, self-efficacy, or student motivation, values and attitudes--affective characteristics--provide crucial keys to how individuals think, learn, and behave. And not surprisingly, as measurement of these traits gains importance in the academic and corporate worlds, there is an ongoing need for valid, scientifically sound instruments.

For those involved in creating self-report measures, the completely updated Third Edition of Instrument Development in the Affective Domain balances the art and science of instrument development and evaluation, covering both its conceptual and technical aspects. The book is written to be accessible with the minimum of statistical background, and reviews affective constructs from a measurement standpoint. Examples are drawn from academic and business settings for insights into design as well as the relevance of affective measures to educational and corporate testing. This systematic analysis of all phases of the design process includes:

  • Measurement, scaling, and item-writing techniques.
  • Validity issues: collecting evidence based on instrument content.
  • Testing the internal structure of an instrument: exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
  • Measurement invariance and other advanced methods for examining internal structure.
  • Strengthening the validity argument: relationships to external variables.
  • Addressing reliability issues.

As a graduate co urse between covers and an invaluable professional tool, the Third Edition of Instrument Development in the Affective Domain will be hailed as a bedrock resource by researchers and students in psychology, education, and the social sciences, as well as human resource professionals in the corporate world.

I shall never forget the day on which I first set eyes upon John Bannister. I was then a boy--sixteen years of age, if I remember rightly--and I stood before him, tongue-tied by the questions that he asked me, wondering how he had come by the great ugly, horrid scar upon his face, awed--indeed, I think, a little frightened--by the great muscles in his forearms, naked to the elbows, his rough weather-beaten face with skin like leather, and above all else by the stature of the man.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Stories such as these should never go out of print By Charles Somerset I am astonished that this book has no reviews yet. It is one of the most gripping adventure stories that I have ever read. This book deserves to be re-discovered again. When I was 13 I became ill for a long time. The Treasure of Kings somehow found itself into my hands as it was published in my grandfather's 1932 omnibus of The Boys Own Paper. The moment I saw the first illustration of a frowning Inca priest holding out a golden scepter in a daring stance, I knew that this was my kind of tale. That story took me to a world from which I have never fully returned again. The drama begins when a teenage boy in England accidentally finds himself on a ship bound for South America. He is quickly drawn into a plot in which a group of thoroughly murderous villains are seeking to discover the fabled lost treasure of the Incas. The real adventure begins, however, when the party arrives in the threatening jungles which civilization has never touched. The boy's journey towards the treasure is set against the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains of the Andes, and fever-invested waterways where anacondas lurk and death and murder touches the story around every corner. The suspense becomes unbearable as the pieces of the puzzle start to come together and the party starts nearing the fabled Big Fish. Even when a grand discovery is made, the story still continues to evolve by a degree or two, before ending in a manner that leaves the reader dazed and unwilling to return to the normal world for days - or even years. If ever a movie should be made about a drama of high adventure, Treasure of Kings would make an outstanding choice. It is one of those rare books that are worth reading again every couple of years or so.
