One summer’s evening a young man was tramping through the Forest of Warden. “Forest of Warden” sounds strange, old-fashioned, almost improbable; but, thank Heaven, there yet remain, in over-crowded England, some spots, few and far between though they may be, still untouched by the greedy fingers of the destroyers, whom men call Progress and Civilization.

Fairly good mystery, bad formatting By kindlefan Once I got past the poor Kindle formatting (especially question marks instead of apostrophes), I enjoyed the mystery. The reader gets frustrated along with the main character when he can't puzzle out what is happening. I like it that his love for his wife doesn't waver even when she is involved in suspicious activities. He endures near death and torture to find out the truth. Well-crafted mystery if a bit verbose in places. Made me suspicious of all the characters except the narrator--a good thing in mysteries.

The Gambler, by Katherine Cecil Thurston

Amazon.com Review The Gambler brilliantly captures the strangely powerful compulsion to bet that Dostoyevsky, himself a compulsive gambler, knew so well. The hero rides an emotional roller coaster between exhilaration and despair, and secondary characters such as the Grandmother, who throws much of her fortune away at the gaming tables, are unforgettable. The book's publishing history is equally so: Under the pressure of a deadline from an unscrupulous publisher, and with rights to his entire oeuvre at stake, Dostoyevsky dictated the book in less than a month to the star pupil of Russia's first shorthand school. Then he married her.

Review "[Michael Kramer gives] full voice to the colorful cast of this psychologically rich novella." ---AudioFile

I'm not sure that any book entitled "Gambling Psychology" would include a better profile of the psychopathology that is gambling addiction. The main character's massochism is also a wonderful case study of how such personalities operate and function. The plot is excellent and "granny" is so perfectly described that it's as if the author included a photograph of her. Much of the Russian psyche is on display and the reader will get a glimpse into people and lifestyles that are quite in keeping with what one might find today in our own Roulettenberg, Las Vegas. This was a concise but pleasant ride through human nature.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An engrossing, fun short work By A Customer The story behind the creation of The Gambler is well-known--due to heavy debt, Dostoevsky had less than four weeks to write a novel to avoid losing the rights to all his works, both past and future. To make his task a bit easier, he hired the star pupil of a stenography school (whom he later married) to take dictation, and for the material of the novel he borrowed heavily from his own life--he had experience as a compulsive gambler, and he used his mistress Apollinariya Suslova as a model for the character Polina. The result was an inspired, though by necessity short, work of art. The passages set in the casino do an excellent job of capturing the tortured fascination that gamblers have with the roulette wheel even for readers, such as myself, who have avoided casinos all their lives. However, The Gambler is not just about gambling--it features an intriguing array of characters which are developed quite well in the mere 117 pages of the novel. "Granny," for instance, is probably just about the most amusing character I've seen in Dostoevsky, and the entangled aims of all the characters make for a very lively narrative. It seems as though, if he had the opportunity, Dostoevsky could have written a whole novel about any one of them. Obviously, The Gambler lacks the depth and brilliance of Dostoevsky's more famous long works, but if you're after a quick, entertaining read, it's really an excellent choice.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. God as Lady Luck By A Customer The Gambler is primarily a book about obssession and mania, a topic that Dostoyevsky would go on to further explore using criminal, political and religious themes as a backdrop. The God in the gambler is not Christ, but Lady Luck and her spinning ways at the roullette wheel. This book written while FD was majorly in debt due to gambling losses explores his need to gamble. Moreover, it is a book that contains some of Dostovesky most memorable tertiary characters. Alexi the narrator is a young tutor and part of a Russian general's entourage in a Riviera. He falls in love with the General's neice, who is constantly tormenting, taunting and pathologically luring him. She makes Alexi, who is not only a compulsive gambler, but an impulsive cretin commit "unspeakable" acts to bourgeoise and lesser royalty in public. One instance has Alexi at her command bumping into a German baronesse's breast and not apologizing. Alexi's desperate failure to win the niece's attention's is marked by his increasing need to gamble his pitous funds. But Lady Luck does smile on Alexi for a while (although he is so agitated he doesn't know it), before taking everything away from him: money, love and his meager Russian pride. The novel sees the disintegration and paradoxic increased euphoria of Alexi's character, until he is at the end so depraved that one wonders what keeps him from going mad. It is, of course, the brilliance of the book. Gambling, which is his undoing, is also his ultimate salvation, his wheel spinning, silver ball bouncing hope. The more depraved Aleci becomes the more manic and inspired the prose becomes with Dostoyevsky's frenetic brilliance making the best of us get itchy palms. At the end you yourself will want to hit the roullette wheel with an inspiration that can only come from the poisoned and infectious mind of a religious man and great writer who once viewed God not as the Arbiter of Good and Evil and Creator of Worlds, but God as a roll of dice, a deal of the cards and a most terrible and remorseless spin of the wheel.Although most people consider this book a minor work, it is Dostoyevsky at his inspired best. While it doesn't have the profound (and morbid) philosophy of Notes from the Underground, it has incredible characterization and a humorous, dramatic narrative

His first books published were poetry. He then moved on to write numerous works of both historical fiction and history, many dealing with Yorkshire, which led to his selection as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Abother Great Read from J. S. Fletcher By Fantasyman I rate this one five stars. Mostly on the craft displayed by the author in writing this story. Some of Fletcher's novels have that boiler plate feel to them, quickly hacked together and then off to the publisher. He was a very inventive story teller with a talent for paring the plot down to bite size tidbits easily digested by the reader. As I have stated, this was one of his more carefully crafted efforts. The plot is excellent and moves along at a steady pace, with well developed characters, and a surprise ending that makes sense, along with wrapping up the story. What intrigues me most about this story is how Fletcher uses the omniscient view to portray events in an active and incisive manner, following one character after another while revealing details both about the characters as well as clues to the mystery itself, yet never wandering off track. None of Fletcher's novels are ever likely to make it into the pantheon of great mystery fiction, as Fletcher never relies on a larger than life detective character to unravel the mystery with a flash of intuitive brilliance. He always builds the mystery with clues that are out there for the reader to see and to relate to. I've read several of his novels to date, and I can state that in not one of them is the reader left in the dark about clues or events that solve the mystery, nor are events that eventually prove to be important glossed over or trivialized in the course of the story to reduce their import in the mind of the reader, only to be suddenly brought back at the end by some superior intellect to solve the mystery. With Fletcher you always know what's what.Take the time to read this one, you won't be disappointed. Here are some other novels by Fletcher that I recommend:The Middle Temple MurderThe Chestermarke InstinctDead Men's MoneyThe Burrough TreasurerSearch Kindle for "J. S. Fletcher Public Domain" to see more.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Unholy mysteries in an old cathedral town By Patto J. S. Fletcher, one of my favorite British vintage mystery writers, has a flair for creating interesting settings for his novels. In this case, it's a small town centered around a thirteenth-century cathedral, and rich in gossipy old ladies and gentlemen. What has tongues wagging as the story unfolds is Doctor Runsford and his two wards. He's not old enough, the gossips feel, to be guardian to a pretty twenty-year-old woman like Mary Bewery. But the gossips soon have more to chew on. A stranger comes to town and falls to his death from a gallery of the cathedral. Accident or murder? The plot is a compex brew of shocking events and roiling suspicions. Doctor Runsford, a man of sterling character and superior intellect, becomes a person of interest, not only to the gossips but to the police. The plot holds many surprises in store. People are not who they appear to be. There are exciting inquests and a fun scene in an ancient graveyard at night. "Paradise" refers to an enclosure near the deanery full of old tombs. The book has one handsome villain who unifies the book in a fascinating way. Bryce is a sly, egotistical young doctor who's determined to marry Mary Bewery, even though she can't stand him. Bryce gets into the thick of the investigations and tries to manipulate everything to serve his ends. His machinations add greatly to the suspense and liveliness of the plot.I disliked Bryce so much that I wasn't sure at first if I would enjoy the book, but I ended up devouring it with relish, as I do all Fletcher's mysteries. They can be a bit rough, because Fletcher knocked them out quickly, but they have an irresistible vitality. The Paradise Mystery was first published in 1921. The Dodo Press edition is decent quality, but lacks an introduction.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. My 1st book by this author By cozykat I never heard of him before but found the book while getting books by other old authors. I enjoyed it and will read more by him. I did not the like main character-Bryce-who is a bad one. The mystery is good and well written. I like the older, clean books and this is one.

By Beach-Man This is a fantastic book, written with relevant examples, and testimonies by other freelancers who have already accomplished varying degrees of success in the freelance WordPress Web Designer world. I have a pretty extensive business background thru formal education and through 15+ years of IT/management consulting for various sized companies. Coming from my background, there was nothing earth shattering revealed in the book, but I found the precise relevance of the examples to be an eye opener. I'm not ashamed to say that I took copious notes and plan to implement many of the concepts and techniques in my own business. If I were to list one thing that I think might limit the wider acceptance of the book, I think it would be that much of the tone seemed to be written from a WordPress "Developer" (someone who writes code, and fully customizes WP, including developing plugins and themes) perspective. I bring this up only in an effort to come up with something that "could" have been done differently. In fact, there are a lot of us out here who are not plugin developers, but who are building web development or website support businesses and who do not, and may never learn to write code at that level. That being said, I found the writing style to be exceptional, and the book hard to put down. The staff at iThemes (I am also a customer of their utilities and tools which I use to manage the WP websites I develop and manage) did an great job in taking the majority of the jargon out of the text so that the book reads like, well..., a primer on how to run a solid web development business, rather than a sales pitch for their products. I admire and respect that... Well done.

Dickson I was looking for a guide to tell me how to price my work, etc. This book is more of a pep talk on how to have the courage to take the leap into working for yourself. Not bad - just wasn't what I was looking for.

OLIVER TWIST (Illustrated), by Charles Dickens

Amazon.com Review An absorbing mystery as well as a morality tale, the story of Pip, a poor village lad, and his expectations of wealth is Dickens at his most deliciously readable. The cast of characters includes kindly Joe Gargery, the loyal convict Abel Magwitch and the haunting Miss Havisham. If you have heartstrings, count on them being tugged.

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. The inimitable Martin Jarvis brings his talents to bear on Charles Dickens's classic in an audiobook that will delight listeners with its superb recreations of gritty 19th-century London. To escape Mr. Bumble and life in the workhouse, Oliver flees to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and becomes embroiled with Fagin's ragtag band of thieves. Jarvis simply dazzles: his performance captures both the humor and sorrow of the text, his narration is crisp, and his characterizations--his rendition of the terrifying district magistrate, Mr. Fang, is particularly memorable--are as varied as they are energetic, befitting, and enjoyable. From School Library Journal Grade 4-8-Presented by the St. Charles Players, this is an example of radio theatre at its finest. The narration moves the abbreviated story along at a brisk, easy-to-follow pace, while the highly polished troupe of actors offers a colorful array of voices and British dialectsAfrom Cockney low-lives to privileged members of the aristocracy. Sound effects and music add spark to the production. Although this version is only about one-third the length of the original, both the story line and the picture of British social conditions and injustices during Dickens's time come through vividly as young Oliver makes his way from the desolation of a workhouse for orphans to Fagin's den of thieves in London and, finally, to the comfort and security of life with an honorable gentleman. As such, it is bound to whet the appetites of upper elementary and middle school youngsters who will be intrigued into reading the original. It also offers, through drama, an enjoyable way of understanding history and should stimulate lively discussions on the relationship between dire poverty and a life of crime.Carol Katz, Harrison Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Thieves, Murderers and all of their Ilk By Zack Davisson This book surprised me, not by the quality of its writing, which one can expect from Charles Dickens, but by the violent, lusty primal quality of the story. This is no dry musty tome, but a vital novel that arouses both passion and intellect. A literal page turner, I found myself having more than one sleepless night when I just couldn't put it down.Inside are some of the major characters in the realm of fiction; Fagin and his gang of child thieves, including the Artful Dodger. Nancy, the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold. Master Charles Bates (was this a pun even then?) Bad Bill Sikes, who shows the darker edge to all of this dangerous fun, and the innocent, pure Oliver Twist, who is the very definition of nature over nurture.A great book, and one that I am glad to have finally read.

"If I start this book, I'm going to have to spend the next month finishing it". That's what I thought anyway. But in Oliver Twist I sailed through the pages. It's rare that a classic, and I have read many of them, becomes a page-turner but this one did. Maybe I was lucky in not having seen the film versions prior to the reading of the book because I desperately wanted to find out what happened to Oliver and the multitude of other brilliantly written characters who inhabit the pages of Dickens' classic. The plot is simple. A boy escapes his orphan home to live in London with a group of thieves and pickpockets. He's saved from this depraved life by a kindly, lonely old gentleman. But the villains, Bill Sykes and especially Fagin, fear that the boy may rat them out and so they kidnap him back. Can Oliver make it back to the life he deserves?Oliver's story is not a very originally one, but it is enlivened by some of the greatest characters I've ever seen written. My personal favourites and there are many, are Noah Claypole who becomes a principle player and a very funny one at that, near the book's conclusion; and Mr. Brownlow, who's catchphrase "I'll eat my own head" had me bursting into laughter. The book is diminished by its excessive sentimentality at the conclusion. Its female characters, apart from the courageous Nancy, are written in a golden light so as to become fantasies rather than the gloriously dirty reality of their male counterparts. A sub-plot between Mary and her boyfriend is ridiculously excessive.Against these weaknesses, the book is a triumph of character. Often memorably played on screen, the two villains have become more famous than the title character, who is slightly simpering. Fagin is deliciously smarmy and Sykes is evil incarnate. They get their comuppance in justifiably brutal fashion. Dickens like most of us was a sucker for a happy ending.

But I bought this classic for my home schooling 6th grade daughter, and vowed to read it no matter what. Well, after the first chapter, I was hooked. And she really loved it too. We read it much faster than I had anticipated, considering the language and size of the book. Highly recommended!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a novel By Amazon Customer I foolishly began to read this as if it were an historical account to fit the title. I then went back to the preface material (that I ought to have read first) and discovered that this is historical fiction of a 20 year span of colonial history. The author purposely rambles because he wants to cover a large spectrum of material unrelated to Salem.

The riveting tale of one woman’s journey and her rise to power, Anna Hastings gives readers an inside glimpse into the workings of journalism in Washington. Drury takes his own experience in the field to reflect on the state of journalism in the 1970s. In contrast to his other series’, notably Advise and Consent, he humanizes the very field he often calls into question. Anna Hastings is a magnificent novel of Washington journalism, shown through the eyes of vivid, fascinating, and humanly likable characters. From Allen Drury, the master of spellbinding political fiction, author of Advise and Consent. “Anna Hastings is both a fresh face and a fresh start in Drury fiction” – John Barkham, The Victoria Advocate 1977

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Drury at his speediest! By Jocelynn Bailey A prequel of sorts to Advise and Consent, this book moves! What a treasure. Drury effectively develops his characters through their conversations, yet still gives us insight to their character through narration. I think all women may find a bit of themselves in Anna or Bess, as all men will be able to identify with one of the male characters in this book. He humanizes what in other books he satirizes (the leftist press). A definite read for Drury lovers, and a great place to start if you want to break into this wonderful author's books.
