You Will Be Taken Aback By Darren In an age where the guys can't stop reading Tucker Max and similar male authors' adventures in the "dating" world, it is perfect timing for an author like Jen Glantz to arrive for the other side. This is built in the same honesty, but with the sensitivity and elegance of a young, female author. The voice is modern and open, the stories laugh-out-loud hilarious, sincere and touching. Her talent is exciting and this relatively short read is a great showcase for how very good her writing is.Read it!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Laugh out loud funny-and TRUE By Tracy Wilk This quick and easy read will make you hold your belly in laughter from all of Jen's single tales. Married, single, or not interested, you'll relate to this book easily because we've all been there. I mean who hasn't slipped an accidental "I love you" or had a shoe break on a first date?! Her honest voice will remind of you a long time friend, and send you through the roller coaster of her dating life. A must read for all the 20-somethings!

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book! By kerrirez Often while chatting with friends about our crazy and embarrassing dates we will joke, "wow, with all of these stories we should really write a book!" Well, Jen has done just that. Her writing is sharp, witty, and relatable. "All My Friends Are Engaged" is laugh-out-loud funny, but also honestly expresses the frustrations of searching for Mr. Right. After reading Jen's writing, you will be hooked. I can't wait to see what she writes next!

By Mirtha Costa Literatura de primera calidad.

“Johnson writes with grace and intelligence. An absorbing and harrowing look at a cutthroat industry culture that runs on raw ambition and hidden shame.” – Kirkus Reviews

Why is Hollywood so reluctant to hire people of color?

You’ve seen how the Rodney King incident and the O.J. Simpson scandal impacted race relations throughout America. But, outside of Hollywood, have you ever heard of Riley Weston, The Secret Life of Desmond Pfeiffer, or “The Virtual Whiteout” of 1999? All of them, including King and O.J. have contributed to low employment for people of color from the late ‘90’s through the economic crisis of 2008.

AppBLACKation Rejected pulls back the Hollywood curtain so readers can see how fear of unemployment promotes racist behavior in otherwise decent people, white and black. From 1992 to the exposure of Amy Pascal in 2014, this book chronicles more than 20 years of deceit and immorality in Hollywood by distinguishing between racism and discrimination, and through the author’s personal journey, examines how liberal Hollywood can practice what they preach and begin hiring African-Americans rather than just talking about it.

If you want to understand why Hollywood is considered unfair, how to deal with unpredictable personalities when hired, or how the business operates from writing through production to distribution, AppBlackation Rejected explains the Hollywood process and its sickness better than any film school could ever dare.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A must read for anyone who thinks Hollywood is color blind. By Frankie Boston First off, this is NOT a book about a black man who blames everything, from stubbing his toe, to not hitting the lottery, on "the white man." Charles witnessed or experienced so many "wrongs" perpetrated by, otherwise, nice people, it frustrated the s*** out of him. He wondered, "Does that person know that what they are doing is so wrong? Worse, yet, do they know that what they are NOT doing, is flat out racist?" There are a lot of "WTF?" moments in this book with regard to people's behavior. At times I felt as if I was reading another man's diary, other times, it felt like I was reading a newly minted philosopher. I remember when I landed in this town, many years ago, I was given a gift of a book that was presented to me as if it was a holy book. That book was/is William Goldman's "Adventures in the Screen Trade." I was told that I should keep it handy because I may want to go back to it many times. Honestly, while I found it interesting and the anecdotes amusing, it was better suited for someone who actually had worked in the business. And not just worked in it, but at a level that would make Mr. Goldman's life lessons relevant. Also, Mr. Goldman's book was written with "a given." It was written for those with the psychological security that they belong in this business as much as anyone. For those who believed that if they did good work, eventually, it would be recognized. That there IS a job out there for you in that writers room. Looking at it through that prism, AppBLACKation Rejected is the perfect book to hand a young man, especially one from the inner city, when he steps off of that proverbial bus. It is chock full of life lessons that he will find handy, if for no other reason, than to not "go off" on someone in a supervisory role. That is something that can haunt you forever. This book can be a great friend to anyone who arrives here with balled up fists from the life left behind. It can help them to avoid mistakes that can derail a career or silence a great voice because of this town's ignorance of the value poor people put on respect. Not undue, respect. Simply, respect. Charles Johnson may not help you avoid the bad behavior of others, or make you immune to the unintended (and sometimes intended) insults, but, it definitely helps to know such behavior isn't coming from a place of true racism or prejudice. i.e. it's not coming from the burning cross on the front lawn or Jim Crow era racism. Sadly, though, the net result may be the same - no job. It might also help you to understand that most of these people out here (Hollywood) were born on first, second, or, third base. Many of those people are very talented. But, if not for the head start and the psychological security of the familiar and a sense of entitlement, most would be just another talented anonymous writer, actor, etc. who packed his bags after a month if they had to make the journey, negotiate the land mines, that guys like Charles Johnson had to.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Charles Johnson pretty much chucks all that out the window and that ... By Eli Steele The entertainment business might be an even tougher racket than the mob – a world where nobody talks freely and everybody toes the line. Charles Johnson pretty much chucks all that out the window and that is why his book is a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Hollywood system from the perspective of a minority. It is this latter fact is that makes this book special: minorities that develop a double-consciousness often see divisions and complexities in America that others do not. Johnson has that gift and he uses it wisely. It would be easy for him to blame race for all the obstacles in his path and be done with it. But instead he chooses to explore the complexities of the situation and is not afraid to admit his own failures. It is because of this honesty that when he does encounter undeniable racism it is… well, undeniable. On a last note, aside from the issue of race, what makes this book a compelling read is that Johnson has the knack in being in the middle of some great Hollywood stories. One of them is the story of Riley Weston, the woman who pretended to be 19 years old to sell a script to the producers of “Felicity.” Who was the person that the producers passed over for the fraud? Johnson, and the story he tells is one that Hollywood would never admit.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of the great things about this book is it's written by a ... By Mark S Most of these "behind the scenes" books about the film and TV industry are ghost written, or at least co-written. Not this one. One of the great things about this book is it's written by a WRITER, and a very skilled one. The journey Mr. Johnson makes is very absorbing, but it's also illuminating. Discussions of institutional racism, unperceived bias, and silent bigotry - and the differences between them - are beginning to be openly discussed, but if you'd like to see how these factors can play out in a personal context, this book does it. It's funny and poignant, yet even when dealing with issues of racism it manages to not take itself too seriously. And frankly it's fun to read first hand stuff about stars like Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Julia Roberts, and the many others sprinkled throughout the book, unfiltered by a press agent. It's one of those enjoyable reads that also, in the end, can fundamentally change how you perceive large and powerful institutions like the entertainment industry.

I first saw the man who kept his money in a box in the midst of the ravine of the Via Mala. I interchanged a few words with him or with his wife at the hospice, at the top of the Splugen; and I became acquainted with him in the courtyard of Conradi’s hotel at Chiavenna. It was, however, afterwards at Bellaggio, on the lake of Como, that that acquaintance ripened into intimacy. A good many years have rolled by since then, and I believe this little episode in his life may be told without pain to the feelings of any one.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tiny, tiny font size makes this difficult to read By critique Good quality paper with print so small I shall need a magnifying glass to read it (and I don't wear reading glasses - my eyesight is good!) Such a disappointment as only about half the page is actually used (large margins). Increase the font and narrow the margins and this would be a delightful publication to read. As it is, reading this Trollope will be hard work.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A short story By SM This was a very short book - a small story. The characters were interesting. It was somewhat predictable and petered out with no consequences. Disappointing.

Charlotte M Yonge for Kindle By Dayle Jacob I have recently discovered the eBooks by Charlotte Mary Yonge and found them mostly charming tales of English life, some with historical interest. The transcribing of the books is sometimes careless and can cause a disruption in reading but the price is right...$.00.
